China is the most popular study-abroad destination for Pakistani students, and it has more scholarship routes than any other country we cover. The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), ANSO, provincial scholarships, the Silk Road program, university scholarships at Peking, Tsinghua, Shanghai Jiao Tong and USTC, and prestige programs like Yenching and Schwarzman. On top of that there is the new CSCA exam, and the self-funded MBBS route that most Pakistani medical students actually take.
With this many options, students mix them up all the time. The most expensive mix-up is about MBBS, so we will clear that first. After that, this guide walks through every route: who it is for, what it pays, when to apply, and where to read more.
The One Thing MBBS Students Must Know
CSC-funded MBBS is taught in Chinese only. The English-medium MBBS programs most Pakistani students join are self-funded. There is no CSC scholarship for English-taught MBBS.
So you have two real MBBS paths in China:

Three tests for CSC MBBS: Pakistani students need to clear MDCAT, USAT-M (the pre-medical USAT that HEC uses for nomination) and CSCA. Even then, Medicine is the most competitive field in the CSC pool, so never make it your only plan.
If you are comfortable committing to Chinese, CSC MBBS is a genuinely funded route. If you want to study in English, budget for the self-funded route and look at university scholarships to reduce the cost. Either way, choose an MOE-listed university with PMDC recognition.

CSC - Chinese Government Scholarship
CSC is run by the China Scholarship Council and is the biggest scholarship in China. It covers Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programs across almost every field.

Two Ways to Apply: Type A and Type B
- Type A (government route): Pakistani students apply through HEC for a nomination. HEC uses the USAT exam for this. Usually December-January. Includes airfare.
- Type B (university route): you apply directly to a CSC-authorised Chinese university. Deadlines vary by university, usually December-March. No airfare.
Many strong applicants run both routes in the same cycle to improve their odds.
Eligibility
- Bachelor's: 12 years of education, under 25
- Master's: Bachelor's degree, under 35
- PhD: Master's degree, under 40
- Good health (medical form required) and no other scholarship at the same time
- Bachelor's applicants must also sit the CSCA (see below). Master's and PhD applicants do not
- MBBS applicants from Pakistan need MDCAT, USAT-M and CSCA

CSCA - The New Entrance Exam
CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment) is a standardised entrance exam for international undergraduate applicants, run by the China Scholarship Council. It held its first sitting in December 2025, became required for CSC Bachelor's applicants from the 2026 intake, and more universities require it every cycle. It is widely reported to become mandatory for all undergraduate applicants by 2028, though no official notice confirms that date yet.
- Subjects: Humanities Chinese, STEM (Science) Chinese, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Each university chooses which ones it wants. For Medicine, Mathematics and Chemistry come up most often
- Language papers: the Chinese papers are waived for fully English-taught programs, but required for Chinese-taught programs, which includes CSC-funded MBBS
- Sittings: several times a year. Scores are valid for 2 years
- Who needs it: Bachelor's applicants only. Master's and PhD applicants are exempt
The most common CSCA mistake is timing. Some universities want scores months before their deadline, so register early and check your target university's required subjects before you pick yours.

HSK - The Chinese Language Test
HSK is China's official Chinese proficiency test, and it matters even on English-taught MBBS. Under China's standard for English-taught Clinical Medicine, students must reach Chinese level 4 before clinical internship, because patients on Chinese wards usually speak only Chinese.

- Miss HSK 4 on MBBS and your internship or degree is delayed. Some universities won't extend your study period just so you can retake it.
- HSK 3.0 launches December 13, 2026 and becomes the regular exam from 2027. A new HSK 4 needs about 2,000 words, compared with 1,200 in the old version.
- Passing score: 60% of the total (180/300 for HSK 3-6). Scores are valid for 2 years for admission.
- In Pakistan: Confucius Institutes and centres in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Faisalabad.

Self-Funded MBBS in China (English-Medium)
This is the route most Pakistani medical students take. Programs are 6 years, taught in English, with clinical years in Chinese hospitals.

ANSO Scholarship (Master's and PhD)
ANSO (Alliance of National and International Science Organizations) funds science and research postgraduates at two of China's strongest science universities: USTC and UCAS (University of Chinese Academy of Sciences). There is no MBBS under ANSO.
- Covers: full tuition, application fee waiver, monthly stipend of ¥3,000 for Master's and ¥6,000-7,000 for PhD, a one-way travel allowance to China, health insurance, and visa and residence permit fees
- Age: Master's applicants born on or after January 1, 1996. PhD applicants born on or after January 1, 1991
- Requirements: Bachelor's for Master's, Master's for PhD, English or Chinese proficiency, and USTC or UCAS admission requirements
- Deadline: usually the 2nd or 3rd week of September each year

Shanghai Government Scholarship
The Shanghai Municipal Government funds international students at 30+ universities in Shanghai, including Fudan, Tongji and Shanghai Jiao Tong.
- Type A (full): tuition, housing, medical insurance, and a stipend of ¥2,500 / ¥3,000 / ¥3,500 by level
- Type B (partial): tuition and medical insurance only
- Age: under 25 (Bachelor's), under 35 (Master's), under 40 (PhD)
- CSCA: required for Bachelor's applicants, not for Master's or PhD

A CSC Type B program for citizens of Belt and Road partner countries, which includes Pakistan. It runs through designated universities such as Tianjin University, Sun Yat-sen University and Nanjing University.

University Scholarships
China's top universities also run their own scholarships. These are often less crowded than CSC, and some can be combined with a self-funded admission.
Peking University Scholarship (PKUS)
Tuition waiver, monthly stipend and medical insurance for Bachelor's, Master's and PhD. Undergraduate scholarships are awarded automatically to admitted students. Graduate awards renew each year after review. Deadlines are generally January and March. 👉 Details

Fully funded Master's and PhD in finance, economics and business at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu. Stipend of ¥1,500 (Master's) or ¥1,800 (PhD). IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80 for English programs. Around May 31. 👉 Details

Yenching Academy (Peking University)
A fully funded, two-year interdisciplinary Master's in China Studies, taught in English, with around 120 students selected worldwide each year. Schwarzman Scholars (Tsinghua University)

Confucius Institute Scholarship (Chinese Language)
Funded by China's Ministry of Education for studying Chinese language and culture, from 4-week courses up to full Bachelor's and Master's degrees in teaching Chinese (BTCSOL / MTCSOL). Covers tuition, a shared dorm room, insurance and a monthly allowance of about ¥2,500-3,000. Usually needs HSK 3 and a nomination through a local Confucius Institute. Deadlines are around May 1 (September intake) and November 1 (March intake).

Common Mistakes
- Expecting CSC to fund English MBBS. It does not. CSC MBBS is Chinese-taught.
- Choosing a non-MOE university for MBBS without checking PMDC recognition first.
- Registering for CSCA too late, or for the wrong subjects.
- Leaving HSK to the final years of MBBS. HSK 4 is needed before internship, so start Chinese in Year 1.
- Applying to only one route. Run CSC Type A and Type B together, and add a university scholarship.
- Using a generic study plan. Name the university, the program and why it fits your goals.
- Trusting old dates. Confirm every deadline on the official portal for your cycle.

No. CSC-funded MBBS is taught in Chinese only. English-medium MBBS in China is self-funded.
Which tests do I need for CSC MBBS?

Do I need HSK for English-taught MBBS in China?

Is ANSO better than CSC?
For science Master's and PhD students aiming at USTC or UCAS, ANSO's PhD stipend is higher. For Bachelor's students and non-science fields, CSC is the main route. ANSO does not cover MBBS.
How much does self-funded MBBS in China cost?

What is the difference between CSC Type A and Type B?
