USAT shows up as a single bullet point in almost every scholarship guide, including our own: "USAT Exam" sits quietly at the top of the selection pipeline for China's CSC scholarship and Hungary's Stipendium Hungaricum, then the guide moves straight on to the next stage. Nobody explains what the test actually is. This fills that gap.
What USAT Actually Is
USAT stands for Undergraduate Studies Admission Test, and it is administered by HEC's own Educational Testing Council (ETC) through the portal etc.hec.gov.pk, not by NTS. That distinction matters because NTS runs several other well-known Pakistani entry tests, and a lot of guidance floating around online quietly conflates the two. If you are searching for "USAT past papers" and landing on NTS material, you may be looking in the wrong place.
USAT exists because HEC needs a standardized way to shortlist thousands of applicants for a limited number of foreign-funded undergraduate scholarship nominations. A valid USAT score is what makes HEC willing to consider you for nomination in the first place, not the scholarship award itself.
Format
USAT is not one fixed paper. It comes in discipline-specific variants, including USAT-M for pre-medical applicants, alongside versions for pre-engineering, arts, and other tracks. Reported formats vary by source and possibly by track, generally described as a multiple-choice paper covering verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and general knowledge sections, plus a timed essay component, scored out of 100 overall. The exact section-by-section question count is not consistently reported across sources, so treat any specific breakdown you read, including summaries elsewhere online, as approximate until you confirm it against HEC's own current test-pattern document at the time you register.
Eligibility
- Completed, or awaiting the result of, Intermediate (FSc/FA/ICS/ICom) or an equivalent 12 years of schooling
- For MBBS scholarship nominations specifically, HEC and the target scholarship (CSC, Stipendium Hungaricum) apply their own additional age and academic criteria on top of USAT eligibility itself, commonly an upper age limit around 25 for undergraduate applicants
Registration, Fee, and Timing
You register directly at etc.hec.gov.pk. The fee has been reported around PKR 2,000, paid via bank challan, though you should confirm the current amount at the time you register rather than budgeting off an old figure.
USAT does not run on a single fixed annual date the way some other entry tests do. HEC schedules sittings tied to specific scholarship cycles, sometimes opening a dedicated window weeks before a scholarship's nomination deadline. A USAT score is valid for one year from the test date, so a score from a previous cycle will not automatically carry over into a new one if too much time has passed.
Which Scholarships Actually Require It
HEC's own eligibility pages confirm USAT as a requirement for undergraduate nomination to China's CSC scholarship and Hungary's Stipendium Hungaricum. Some other guides, including material published on this site previously, list Türkiye Bursları, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan alongside these two. We were not able to independently confirm a USAT requirement for those three directly from official sources during this review, and Türkiye's own scholarship portal describes a separate selection process with no mention of USAT. If you are applying to a scholarship not confirmed here, check that specific scholarship's current nomination announcement rather than assuming USAT applies.
How the Score Is Actually Used
HEC has stated a minimum qualifying score of 50 out of 100, below which an application will not move forward in the process. Beyond that floor, it is not clearly documented whether HEC ranks applicants by USAT score for final nomination or simply uses it as a pass/fail gate alongside your academic record. What is clear is that a good USAT score alone does not secure a scholarship. It only keeps your file in play for the next stage, university entrance exams and interviews that come after HEC nomination.
Preparing for It
No fully official, publicly accessible past-paper archive from HEC or ETC was confirmed during our research. Commercial test-prep publishers sell USAT-specific guides with practice questions organized by discipline track. Treat any "past papers" from unofficial aggregator sites as unverified practice material rather than guaranteed reproductions of the real test.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing USAT with HAT. HAT is HEC's separate test for Master's and PhD nominations. If you are applying for an undergraduate MBBS scholarship, USAT is the one that applies to you.
- Assuming NTS administers it. Registration happens through HEC's ETC portal, not NTS.
- Missing the registration window. Because sittings are tied to specific scholarship cycles rather than a fixed public calendar, checking HEC's announcements regularly matters more here than for most other entry tests.
- Sitting an old score and assuming it still counts. Validity is one year from the test date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does passing USAT guarantee an HEC nomination?
No. It clears the minimum bar HEC requires to consider your application. Nomination still depends on your overall academic profile and how HEC ranks the applicant pool for that specific cycle.
Do I need USAT for every foreign scholarship?
No. It is confirmed for China's CSC and Hungary's Stipendium Hungaricum. Check the specific nomination requirements for any other scholarship rather than assuming USAT applies automatically.
