IELTS vs TOEFL vs PTE vs Duolingo: Which Test to Take in 2026

Which English test should a Pakistani student take? Compare IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and Duolingo on format, scores, results, home options, UKVI rules and scholarship requirements.

Most Pakistani students pick an English test backwards. They book what a cousin took, pay a large fee, and only then read the scholarship instructions. Sometimes it works. Sometimes the score is the wrong kind, the wrong version, or not needed at all. This guide puts the decision in the right order: scholarship and university first, visa rules second, test third.

Details below come from the official test pages, GOV.UK, and the scholarship bodies, checked in October 2026. Test formats, fees and score scales change often, so treat every number here as "as of 2026, check the official site" before you pay anything.

The four tests side by side

All four measure reading, writing, listening and speaking. They differ in delivery, scoring and, most importantly, who accepts them.

TestFormat and lengthScore scaleResultsFrom home?
IELTS AcademicListening, Reading, Writing, Speaking. IELTS lists a total of 2 hours 45 minutes, with a live speaking test of 11 to 14 minutesBands 1 to 9, overall rounded to the nearest half bandIELTS Online results arrive in 6 to 8 days. For test centres, check your booking pageIELTS Online exists for Academic only, but I could not confirm it is offered in Pakistan
TOEFL iBTReading, Listening, Writing, Speaking on a computer. ETS describes about 2 hours, and the Reading and Listening sections adapt to your performanceNew 1 to 6 scale in half-point steps since 21 January 2026. Reports also carry an estimated 0 to 120 score until January 2028Within 72 hours, per ETSYes, TOEFL iBT Home Edition, or a test centre
PTE AcademicOne computer test of about 2 hours at a test centre, three parts: Speaking and Writing, Reading, Listening10 to 90Most within two business days, sometimes up to fiveNo. Pearson says it cannot be taken at home
Duolingo English TestAdaptive online test of about one hour10 to 160, in steps of 5Certified results typically in about two daysYes, it is an online test

Two points matter more than the table. First, the IELTS live speaking interview feels different from speaking into a microphone. Some students freeze with an examiner, others freeze with a headset. Know which one you are. Second, a computer test is not automatically easier. TOEFL and PTE both punish slow typing and weak time management on screen.

What an IELTS or TOEFL score costs in Pakistan

The only fees I am comfortable quoting are the ones published by the testing bodies themselves. IDP Pakistan lists IELTS on computer at PKR 75,600 for Islamabad, Karachi and Gujrat and PKR 76,240 for Lahore and Faisalabad. IELTS for UKVI on computer is PKR 78,820 in all cities. The British Council Pakistan has published its own price documents several times in 2026, and the UKVI figure in them has changed between versions. So the safe advice is simple: open the British Council Pakistan or IDP booking page on the day you decide, and pay what it shows, not what a blog or a centre agent tells you.

ETS shows TOEFL fees by country only after you select your location on its fees page, so I cannot give you a Pakistan figure. ETS does list US$29 for each additional score report. Duolingo's own blog has quoted US$70 for the test, and it lets you send certified scores to institutions without a per-report fee. Anything much cheaper than the official price, especially from an "agent", should make you suspicious.

Start with the UK visa question if you are going to Britain

This is where Pakistani students lose the most money, so read it even if the UK is only one option on your list.

  • For a UK Student visa, GOV.UK says you usually need to prove your English. Degree level and above needs CEFR B2. Below degree level needs B1.
  • You can prove it in several ways: a UK school qualification, a UK degree, a non-UK degree taught in English with an Ecctis assessment, or a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider. GOV.UK says some higher education providers may assess your English themselves, as long as the level is equivalent to B2.
  • If your university does assess your English and states it on your CAS, you generally do not need to upload a separate certificate. Chevening says this in its own guidance, but confirm it with your university.
  • IELTS for UKVI is the SELT that most Pakistani students take. Its Academic version has the same content and scoring as normal IELTS Academic, but it is booked and taken at an approved centre. Ordinary IELTS does not become a SELT because you ask nicely.
  • IELTS Online is not accepted for immigration purposes, according to the ielts.org IELTS Online page. A SELT must be taken in person.
  • Home Office guidance says SELT results are valid for two years.
  • PTE Academic is for university study, but PTE Academic UKVI exists as a separate product for certain routes. Pearson lists it for work visas and for study below degree level or at institutions that are not higher education institutions. For a normal UK degree, check with your university before booking.

The practical rule: if a UK university offer is the goal, ask the admissions office in writing whether it will assess your English itself or whether you need a SELT for the visa. Do not buy the UKVI version before you know. Also read why applications fail at the visa stage in our student visa rejection guide.

A small but real timing note: GOV.UK also lists a new route for applications from 26 March 2027, involving confirmation from a qualified English teacher after at least 75 guided learning hours. It is not a replacement for a test for most of you, and details can change, so read the Immigration Rules before assuming it applies.

What the major scholarships actually ask for

Scholarship rules differ from each other and from the university's own rules. Here is what I could confirm from official pages and our scholarship files.

  • The Schwarzman Scholars instructions list TOEFL iBT 100 (or 5 on the 6-point scale), IELTS 7, Duolingo 130, or Cambridge C1/C2 at 185. It waives the requirement if English is your native language or you studied at least two years in an English-speaking program at undergraduate or graduate level. See our Schwarzman guide. The official page notes that some exams are valid for only two years.
  • The USEFP Fulbright degree page asks for a high level of English and says selected candidates take the TOEFL, plus the GRE General with a minimum of 145 on each section. Earlier USEFP announcements named the Duolingo English Test instead, so the rule has moved between cycles. Read the current call before you book. Our scholarship pages also say to send scores with institutional code 2326 so they reach IIE, which you should confirm in the current instructions.
  • DAAD requirements depend on the specific scholarship and the university. Listings I found ask for combinations such as IELTS 6.0 or 6.5, or TOEFL iBT around 79 to 80, and certificates not older than two or three years at the deadline, depending on the call. DAAD's EPOS FAQ says the institutional TOEFL is not accepted. Pakistan is not on DAAD's list of countries exempt from proof. Start with our DAAD Pakistan guide, then read the call for your exact programme.
  • Chevening removed its own English language requirement in 2020. You still need an unconditional offer from a UK university, and that university sets its own English level. Our Chevening guide covers the timeline.

Notice the pattern. Same IELTS 6.5 can pass one scholarship and fail another, and the validity window changes from call to call. You cannot choose a target score before you have a shortlist.

A new thing to know: TOEFL now uses a 1 to 6 scale

Since 21 January 2026, TOEFL iBT reports show section and overall scores from 1 to 6. ETS says reports will also include an estimate on the old 0 to 120 scale through January 2028. Universities are updating at different speeds. One may ask for 80, another for 4.5, and a third may show both. If a requirement page still quotes only an old number, ask the university how it reads the new report. Do not convert by yourself from a blog table.

Choosing a test: a five-step method

  1. List three to six scholarships or universities you will really apply to.
  2. Copy the exact English wording from each official page: accepted tests, minimum score, per-section minimum, validity window, waiver rule.
  3. If any UK route is on the list, find out whether you need a SELT for the visa. That can decide the test for you.
  4. Pick the test accepted by the most items on your list. For most Pakistani applicants this is IELTS, with TOEFL as the usual alternative for US-linked awards.
  5. Set your target score by the highest minimum, then book with space for one retake before the earliest deadline.

PTE and Duolingo are legitimate when an institution lists them in black and white. If the page does not mention them, assume they are not accepted until the university confirms in writing. A Duolingo result accepted at one university tells you nothing about the next.

Taking a test from home: what it really involves

Home testing sounds convenient for students outside the big cities. It also has strict conditions. ETS says TOEFL iBT Home Edition needs a single screen, a webcam, a microphone, a second camera on a phone or tablet showing your desk and hands, and a private, quiet room with covered windows. There are no breaks and no one may enter the room. A power cut or a noisy household in Pakistan can ruin an attempt. Check ETS's country list (Pakistan appears for the home edition) and test your setup before the day.

Whether your target institution accepts a home result is a separate question from whether you can take one. IELTS itself warns that acceptance of IELTS Online varies and tells you to check with your institution first.

When you may not need a test

A medium of instruction (MOI) letter or an English proficiency certificate from your previous university can replace a test for some programmes. Schwarzman's waiver for two years of English-medium study is one example. Many Pakistani degrees are taught in English, but the university decides whether to issue the letter and the receiving institution decides whether to accept it. Our MOI letter guide explains how to ask for one. Get the receiving university's answer in writing before you skip the test.

Sample shortlist note

This is a sample for a made-up applicant. Copy the structure into a spreadsheet and fill it from official pages.

Applicant: Ayesha, BS Computer Science, Lahore. Target: master's, next intake.
Option A (UK university): accepts own English assessment? Ask admissions. If not, IELTS for UKVI Academic needed for visa. Valid two years from test date.
Option B (US award): TOEFL named for selected candidates. Check current call. Send scores to the code in the instructions.
Option C (German programme): IELTS or TOEFL, certificate age limit stated in the call. MOI waiver? Not stated, email the university.
Decision: book IELTS for UKVI only after Option A confirms. Target = highest minimum on A, B, C plus a margin. Leave a gap before the earliest deadline for a retake.

Retakes, validity and prep from Pakistan

  • Work backwards from the earliest deadline. Results take days, and some bodies need scores sent directly by the testing organisation.
  • After a first attempt, study the section breakdown as well as the overall score. Many universities set a minimum in each section.
  • Watch expiry. IELTS recommends a result for a maximum of two years, PTE says two years, and receiving organisations set their own rules.
  • Take an official practice test before booking. Weak speaking, not weak vocabulary, is the most common surprise for students who studied in Urdu-medium schools or never practised aloud.
  • Practise on the format you will sit. If you take a computer test, do your mocks on a computer.
  • Ignore anyone who guarantees a band score or offers to "arrange" results. That is fraud and can get your application cancelled. See our guide on how to spot a fake consultant.

Mistakes that cost Pakistani applicants the most

  • Booking before reading the scholarship and university requirements.
  • Taking ordinary IELTS when a UK visa needs a SELT, or buying a SELT when the university would assess English itself.
  • Aiming at the lowest minimum on the list instead of the highest.
  • Letting a score expire before the deadline.
  • Trusting a fee or rule from an agent instead of the booking page.
  • Assuming an MOI letter works without asking in writing.
  • Leaving the test to the last month, when attestation and other paperwork compete for time. Our documents checklist shows what else must be ready.

Frequently asked questions

Which test is best for a Pakistani student?

IELTS Academic is the safest default because most scholarships and universities list it. The right test is the one your scholarship, university and visa all accept, so check those pages first.

Do I need IELTS for UKVI or is normal IELTS enough?

Normal IELTS may be enough for university admission, but a UK Student visa needs a SELT unless you have another accepted proof or your university assesses your English. IELTS for UKVI is the SELT version. Confirm with your university before booking.

Can I take IELTS or PTE at home?

PTE Academic cannot be taken at home, according to Pearson. IELTS Online is for Academic only and is not accepted for UK immigration. I could not confirm that IELTS Online is offered in Pakistan, so check the British Council Pakistan and IDP pages.

Is the Duolingo English Test accepted for scholarships?

Only some. Schwarzman lists a Duolingo score of 130, and earlier USEFP announcements named it, but the USEFP degree page now names TOEFL. Do not rely on it unless the official page says so.

How long is a score valid?

PTE says two years from the test date. IELTS recommends a maximum of two years. UK SELT results are valid for two years per Home Office guidance. DAAD and Schwarzman set their own limits, so check each call.

Can an MOI letter replace the test?

Sometimes. Some programmes waive the requirement for English-medium study, but it depends on the receiving university. Ask in writing.

Should I take the test before I get an offer?

If your shortlist clearly needs a score and deadlines are close, yes. If a waiver might apply, ask first. Our scholarships guide explains how to build the shortlist.

Read the requirement, check the visa rule, pick the test, set a target above the highest minimum, and book with room for a retake. That order saves more money than any coaching class.
