MBBS in Wuhan means choosing between four universities in our directory: Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) and Wuhan University, both MOE-listed and costing about US$6,470 to US$7,100 a year after year 1, and Jianghan University and Wuhan University of Science and Technology, both non-MOE and costing about US$3,020 to US$3,200 a year. Fees below are per our directory. Confirm the current fee with the university before you pay anything.
Wuhan is the capital of Hubei province and one of the larger student cities in central China. It also carries a memory from 2020 that worries some parents. This guide gives the fee comparison first, then deals with the safety question, the winter, and the other Hubei options.
Which universities offer MBBS in Wuhan?
Our directory lists four Wuhan universities with an MBBS (clinical medicine) programme. All four teach the MBBS in English and run one intake a year, in September. Annual figures are the recurring total from year 2 (tuition, hostel, visa extension and insurance). Year 1 costs more because of one-time charges.
| University | City | Annual fee from year 2 | MOE-listed | Short note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Huazhong University of Science and Technology | Wuhan | US$6,470 (RMB 46,600) | Yes | Tongji Medical College; HSK-5 needed before internship |
| Wuhan University | Wuhan | US$7,100 (RMB 51,100) | Yes | IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 80 listed; twin-sharing hostel |
| Jianghan University | Wuhan | US$3,020 (RMB 21,400) | No | Lowest fee in the city; HSK-4 in year 1 |
| Wuhan University of Science and Technology | Wuhan | US$3,200 (RMB 22,800) | No | Provincial university; HSK-4 in year 1 |
The two MOE-listed universities cost roughly double the two non-MOE ones. That gap is the main trade-off in Wuhan, and it is worth understanding before you compare anything else. Our guide to the MOE-listed universities in China explains what the listing means.
How much does MBBS cost in Wuhan?
The year 1 bill and the six-year total are what families should budget for. These come from the fee tables in our directory.
| University | Year 1 total | Years 2 onward (each) | Six-year total in our directory |
|---|---|---|---|
| Huazhong University of Science and Technology | RMB 62,000 | RMB 46,600 | about RMB 293,900 |
| Wuhan University | RMB 66,500 | RMB 51,100 | about RMB 321,000 |

| Wuhan University of Science and Technology | RMB 35,300 | RMB 22,800 | about RMB 149,300 |
A few details sit behind these numbers:
- At HUST and Wuhan University, year 1 includes a RMB 15,000 liaison fee and a separate RMB 1,500 application fee. HUST tuition is RMB 40,000 a year and Wuhan University tuition is also RMB 40,000.
- HUST lists a double-room hostel at RMB 5,000 a year. Wuhan University lists a twin-sharing room at RMB 9,500.
- Jianghan lists year 1 as an all-inclusive package of RMB 32,300. Its yearly tuition from year 2 is RMB 17,000 and hostel RMB 3,200.
- Wuhan University of Science and Technology lists an all-inclusive year 1 package of RMB 35,300, then tuition of RMB 18,000 and hostel of RMB 3,600 a year.
None of these figures include flights, food, pocket money or Chinese language books. For a full budget, read our MBBS in China total cost guide. Exchange rates move, so convert the RMB figure on the day you pay.
Is HUST or Wuhan University better for MBBS?
Neither is better for everyone. Both are MOE-listed, both are public national universities, and both cost within a few hundred dollars of each other. The real differences are in language rules and teaching format.
Huazhong University of Science and Technology
HUST runs the MBBS through Tongji Medical College. Per our directory, the first two years are fully in English, years 3 and 4 are bilingual, and years 5 and 6 use increasing amounts of Chinese. HSK-5 must be passed before the year 6 internship, which is higher than the HSK-4 many MOE universities ask for. The internship must be done in China. If you dislike the idea of learning serious Chinese, check this point first. Our directory also lists IELTS or TOEFL as required, without a fixed score, so ask HUST for the exact number.
Wuhan University
Our directory describes the Wuhan University MBBS as fully in English, with HSK-4 required before graduation and no HSK exam during the programme. It lists IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL 80, and a minimum of 80 percent in high school. Official Wuhan University notices (the one we found dates from 2019) say medicine applicants sit tests and an interview run by the university, so expect an assessment step rather than a paper application only. The hostel is listed as centrally heated, with a Muslim canteen on campus.
How to choose
- Pick Wuhan University if you want an English-medium programme with a lighter Chinese requirement.
- Pick HUST if you can handle the heavier Chinese demand in later years and want a lower yearly fee than Wuhan University.
- Check the current ranking tables yourself. Positions in QS and Times Higher Education change every year, and secondary sites often quote old numbers. Use the official ranking sites and note the year.
Both universities also need the CSCA for many Chinese applications now. See our CSCA exam guide, and check each university's current rule.
Is Wuhan University MOE-listed for MBBS?
Our directory lists Wuhan University as MOE-listed, and also lists HUST as MOE-listed. Jianghan University and Wuhan University of Science and Technology are not MOE-listed in our directory.
MOE-listed means the university is on the Chinese Ministry of Education's list of institutions approved to teach MBBS in English to international students. It is a Chinese approval. It is separate from Pakistani recognition. Our directory flags all four Wuhan universities as listed as PMDC-approved. That is a directory flag, not a legal guarantee, so confirm each one on pmdc.pk and search.wdoms.org before paying a deposit. Our guide on how to verify PMDC-recognised universities in China walks through the steps.
Our directory also lists the two non-MOE universities with other recognitions, such as WHO, ECFMG and WDOMS. Treat those as claims to verify, not facts to rely on. If your plan includes USMLE or practice outside Pakistan, the WDOMS and ECFMG status of the exact university matters, and it can change.
What about the two cheaper Wuhan universities?
Jianghan University and Wuhan University of Science and Technology cost about US$3,000 to US$3,200 a year, which is roughly 45 percent of the MOE-listed fees. That saving is real over six years. The difference between HUST and Jianghan is around RMB 154,600 in the totals above.
The trade-off is the MOE listing. Neither is MOE-listed in our directory. Both teach in English, but both ask students to pass HSK-4 in the first year (Jianghan lists it as before the end of year 1, and WUST as compulsory within year 1), and both build a Chinese language foundation into year 1. Jianghan also lists a tuition waiver of RMB 10,000, returned within 40 days for eligible applicants. Ask in writing what "eligible" means.
Clinical training sites are worth asking about. Jianghan lists Wuhan Sixth Hospital, a Grade 3A comprehensive hospital, as its main training base. Wuhan University of Science and Technology lists more than ten affiliated hospitals. Ask each university which hospitals your internship rotations actually use, and in which language.
If you are tempted by a lower fee, read our guide on MBBS in China eligibility and decide what you need from the degree first. A cheaper fee is only a saving if the degree takes you where you plan to go.
Is Wuhan safe for Pakistani students?
Wuhan's reputation comes from the early 2020 COVID-19 outbreak. The city was locked down in January 2020 and the lockdown was lifted on 8 April 2020 after 76 days, according to news reports at the time, including Sixth Tone. That is now more than six years ago.
What students said then is worth reading. In March 2020, Associated Press of Pakistan reported a Pakistani student at Wuhan Textile University saying his teachers raised awareness, arranged food and gave out masks in the dormitory. That is one student's account from the time, and it is not proof of anything today.
A safe answer for a parent looks like this:
- The 2020 lockdown was a public health event. It is not a continuing risk to students in the way many people imagine.
- Day-to-day safety depends on the campus, the hostel and your habits. Wuhan is a city of over 11 million people, so normal big-city care applies.
- Before you travel, read the current Pakistan Foreign Office and Chinese embassy guidance, and ask the university what its health and emergency arrangements are.
- Ask for the contact details of current Pakistani students at your chosen university and speak to them directly.
For hostel rules, halal food and daily life, see our guide to life in China for Pakistani MBBS students.
What is winter like in Wuhan for students?
Winter is cold and damp, not freezing like northern China. Climate sites put January daytime highs at roughly 8 to 9 degrees Celsius and night lows near 1 to 2 degrees, though they differ by a degree or two. Our directory gives 0 to 5 degrees Celsius for January at Wuhan University.
Pakistani students from Karachi or Lahore usually feel the damp more than the temperature. Pack warm layers and a good coat. Then ask the university in writing whether your hostel room has heating. Wuhan University lists its hostel as centrally heated in our directory. For HUST, Jianghan and Wuhan University of Science and Technology, we do not have a heating detail, so ask.
Are there other cheap Hubei universities for MBBS?
Yes. Our directory lists 11 Hubei universities in total. Besides the four in Wuhan, there are seven more in other Hubei cities. Only China Three Gorges University is MOE-listed.
| University | City | Annual fee from year 2 | MOE-listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| China Three Gorges University | Yichang | US$5,125 | Yes |
| Hubei Polytechnic University | Huangshi | US$2,760 | No |
| Hubei University of Science and Technology | Xianning | US$2,820 | No |
| Hubei University of Medicine | Shiyan | US$3,060 | No |
| Hubei Minzu University | Enshi | US$3,065 | No |
| Hubei University of Arts and Science | Xiangyang | US$3,130 | No |
| Yangtze University | Jingzhou | US$3,450 | No |
China Three Gorges University is the MOE-listed value option outside Wuhan, at US$5,125 a year in our directory. Yichang is about two hours from Wuhan by high-speed rail, per our directory notes. The other six are non-MOE and cost between US$2,760 and US$3,450. Smaller cities cost less to live in, but have fewer international food options and flight links than Wuhan.
How do you decide?
- Decide your budget for six years, using the year 1 and yearly figures above.
- Decide whether MOE-listed status is a must. For most families who plan to sit the Pakistani licensing exam, we suggest treating it as one.
- Check the language rules: HSK-4 or HSK-5, and how much Chinese the later years use.
- Verify the university on pmdc.pk and search.wdoms.org.
- Ask for the fee in writing, and ask which fees are not refundable.
On entry rules, MDCAT is not required for Pakistani students seeking admission to foreign medical institutions since PM&DC public notice No. Exam-59/2026/350 of 5 October 2026. Read our summary of the PM&DC notice on MDCAT. You still need to graduate from a PM&DC-recognised institution and pass the registration exam (NRE) to practise in Pakistan. Other May 2026 conditions, such as the FSc marks requirement and registration on srf.pmdc.pk, are unconfirmed after the notice, so check pmdc.pk before you apply.
Titans Abroad does not charge a consultation fee, and we only shortlist universities that are PMDC-approved in our records and MOE-listed.
