Wuhan University of Science and Technology (WUST) traces its origin to 1898 when it was founded as the Hubei Technical Institute by Zhang Zhidong, Viceroy of Huguang Province in the late Qing Dynasty. The modern iteration was re-established in 1957 as the Wuhan Iron and Steel Institute, gaining authorisation for master's degrees in 1978 and doctoral degrees in 1998. In 1999 it transitioned to provincial governance under the Hubei Provincial Government and adopted its current name.
WUST is a Double First-Class provincial university ranked 171 in China and 1,159 globally. The university hosts 30,000+ full-time students (24,000+ undergraduates, 6,000+ postgraduates) across 3 campuses spanning 1.71 million square metres. The School of Medicine, founded in 1958, sits beside Huangjia Lake and operates 5 faculties: Basic Medicine, Public Health, Pharmacy, Nursing and Clinical Medicine. The international MBBS programme launched in 2015 with English-medium faculty and has already produced 3 graduated batches.
WUST's primary teaching hospital is Wuhan Tianyou Hospital - a Grade III-A facility and designated national clinical teaching base. Combined with 10+ affiliated hospitals (Wuhan Hanyang, Wuhan Puren, Wuhan Asia Heart, Central Hospital of Xiaogan, Wugang General) providing 10,000+ beds, plus 8+ disease control centres and 5 pharmaceutical companies, the clinical training network is one of the largest among non-MOE universities. PMC A-List standing and Double First-Class designation reflect the university's strong institutional recognition.

The remaining 5 years cover the standard MBBS curriculum: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Histology, Embryology, Microbiology, Immunology, Pathology, Pharmacology and Pathophysiology in the preclinical phase, followed by clinical rotations in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine and allied specialties.
Clinical training is anchored at Wuhan Tianyou Hospital (Grade III-A, national clinical teaching base) with rotations across 10+ affiliated hospitals providing 10,000+ collective beds. Important Admission Requirements
MOE Listed vs Non-MOE: What it Means for You
WUST is not on China's Ministry of Education (MOE) English-medium MBBS list. The international MBBS is English-medium (Year 1 is a Chinese language foundation year) with Year 1 dedicated to Chinese language and HSK-4 compulsory within Year 1. Non-MOE status does not reduce international standing - WUST holds PMC A-List approval, WHO recognition, ECFMG listing and Double First-Class provincial designation. The main practical difference is the English-medium teaching environment (Year 1: Chinese language foundation) and the Year 1 HSK-4 requirement. Confirm current PMDC/PMC NOC status with Titans Abroad before applying.
Language Requirement: HSK-4 Within Year 1 (Strict)
WUST has one of the stricter HSK timelines among non-MOE universities. Students must pass HSK Level 4 by the end of Year 1 to progress to the clinical curriculum. Failure means either repeating the Chinese language year, transferring to another university, or withdrawing from the programme. Beginning Chinese language preparation 3-6 months before arrival is strongly recommended.
Pakistan, India and Bangladesh Recognition
WUST holds PMC A-List standing - Pakistani graduates are eligible to sit the NLE/NRE licensing examination after completing the 6-year MBBS. Indian applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese medical universities generally do not meet current NMC (India) criteria for FMGE/NExT eligibility under the 2021 NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate regulations; verify the latest NMC requirements directly with the National Medical Commission before applying. Bangladeshi applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese programmes are not commonly included on BMDC's recognised foreign institutions list; verify the current BMDC list directly before applying. Always verify current council policy before applying.

Is WUST MOE listed?
No. WUST is not on China's MOE list for English-medium MBBS programmes. The programme is English-medium (Year 1: Chinese language foundation) with Year 1 dedicated to Chinese language and HSK-4 compulsory within Year 1. WUST holds Double First-Class provincial status and PMC A-List approval, so international recognition remains strong despite the non-MOE status.
What is the HSK requirement at WUST?
WUST has one of the stricter HSK timelines among non-MOE universities. Students must pass HSK Level 4 by the end of Year 1 to progress to the clinical curriculum. What happens if I fail HSK-4 in Year 1 at WUST?
