MBBS in China eligibility for Pakistani students comes down to two sets of rules. PM&DC sets the conditions that decide whether your degree can lead to a licence in Pakistan, and since 5 October 2026 passing MDCAT is no longer one of them for admission abroad, as explained in our report on the PM&DC notice that removes the MDCAT requirement for MBBS abroad. Whether PM&DC still expects a 60% FSc (Pre-Medical) and online registration is unconfirmed, so check pmdc.pk. Each Chinese university then adds its own rules on age, subject marks, English proof and, increasingly, the CSCA exam. You must satisfy both.
Most guides blur these two layers together, which is why you see "60 percent, age 16 to 25" repeated everywhere and then contradicted on the next site. This guide separates them, shows where universities differ, and tells you how to check the current rule yourself. Everything below was checked against PM&DC notices and Chinese university pages in October 2026. Rules change from year to year, so confirm the final details before you pay anything.
Quick answer: who can apply for MBBS in China?
A Pakistani student can apply if all of these are true:
- You have passed FSc (Pre-Medical) or an accepted equivalent, usually with at least 60% marks.
- You do not need an MDCAT score. PM&DC exempted it for admission abroad on 5 October 2026.
- You meet the university's age limit, which is usually somewhere between 17 and 25.
- You can show English ability if the university asks for it, or qualify for a waiver.
- You sit the entrance exam the university asks for, which for many universities is now CSCA.
- The university and programme meet PM&DC's conditions for registration and the National Registration Examination (NRE).
The first point is the usual baseline and the MDCAT exemption is national policy. The rest depend on the university you pick, so two students with the same marks can get different answers.
What does PM&DC require before you take admission in China?
PM&DC is the regulator that decides whether your degree leads to a licence in Pakistan. Its Public Notice No. Exam-59/2026/350, dated 5 October 2026, says: "the PM&DC Council, in its meeting held on 14th September 2026, has decided to exempt the mandatory requirement of having passed the MDCAT as a pre-requisite for Pakistani students seeking admission into foreign medical and dental institutions." So MDCAT is not required for admission in China, Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan or anywhere else.
These parts of the system stay in place:
- MDCAT is still required for medical and dental colleges inside Pakistan.
- The National Examination Board (NEB) assessment is still required to transfer into a Pakistani institution.
- The registration exam (NRE) is still required for foreign graduates who want to practise in Pakistan.
- Only graduates of PM&DC-recognised institutions get provisional registration and can sit the NRE.
One point is unconfirmed. PM&DC's earlier public notice of May 2026, which you can read as the PM&DC public notice for students seeking admission in foreign institutions, also listed FSc (Pre-Medical) at 60% or more, online registration on srf.pmdc.pk and training conditions. The October notice does not say whether these still apply. Confirm with PM&DC at pmdc.pk before you enrol. PM&DC's policy guidelines, effective from session 2024-25, add more conditions, and the October notice does not say whether they still stand either. Treat them as possible conditions until PM&DC confirms, because under those guidelines a student who ignores them can be declared ineligible for the NRE.
- The programme must be in allopathic medicine and awarded by an institution recognised by the regulator of the host country.
- The course must run at least 6,200 hours over five years, with at least 80% attendance.
- Before you leave, you must get a free PM&DC Student Registration Certificate through the online portal.
- Where the medium of instruction is not English, you must spend time learning the local language before going abroad.
- You must pass the NRE to get a licence, and you must show a multiple-entry visa valid for the whole programme when you apply for it.
These are in the PM&DC policy guidelines for undergraduate foreign admissions. Two details are not settled in the sources I found. The guidelines say six months of language learning, while press reports of a May 2026 PM&DC statement say five months. Also, the guidelines refer to the ECFMG list of institutions, while other reports mention the PM&DC list and the World Directory of Medical Schools. Ask PM&DC or check pmdc.pk for the current wording before you commit. Our guide to PMDC registration after a foreign MBBS covers the licensing end of the journey.
Is MDCAT required for MBBS in China?
No. Chinese universities have never needed MDCAT to admit you, and since 5 October 2026 PM&DC no longer asks for it either. Older websites that say "MDCAT is compulsory, with at least 50%" describe the earlier May 2026 notice, so treat them as out of date. MDCAT still matters if you want a seat in a Pakistani medical or dental college.
The difference that remains is between getting admitted and getting registered. A university offer lets you study, while PM&DC recognition and the NRE decide the licence. We explain the full picture in our article on whether MDCAT is required for MBBS abroad. You no longer need to plan an intake around an MDCAT date, unless you also want to keep a Pakistani seat open.
Eligibility table: PM&DC rules versus university rules
| Requirement | PM&DC rule (Pakistan) | Chinese university rule (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| FSc marks | Earlier notice asked for Pre-Medical or equivalent, minimum 60%. The October 2026 notice does not say, so confirm with PM&DC | 60% on most of our university pages, 70% at some. Subject marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology are sometimes asked separately. |
| MDCAT | Not required for admission abroad since 5 October 2026 | Not asked by the university |
| Age | No age limit in the notices I found | Usually 18 to 25. Some accept 17. A few allow up to 28 or 30. Some are strict. |
| English | No test named | IELTS or TOEFL at some universities, a waiver or no test at others |
| Entrance exam | None named for China | CSCA at many universities. Some use an interview and document review only. |
| Recognition | Institution must meet PM&DC conditions for registration and the NRE | Look for MOE listing and a programme taught in English |
| Registration | Earlier notice required online registration at srf.pmdc.pk before you leave. Confirm with PM&DC whether it still applies | Not applicable |
Treat the university column as a guide, not a rule. The figures come from our own university pages and from official admission pages such as Tongji, Dalian Medical and Capital Medical University. They differ by university and by year.
How many marks are required for MBBS in China?
There is no MDCAT mark to meet any more. The earlier PM&DC notice set 60% in FSc Pre-Medical, and the October 2026 notice does not say whether that still applies. On our university pages, the most common minimum is 60% in HSSC or equivalent. Some universities ask for 60% in both SSC and HSSC. Others ask for 70% overall, or 70% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Zhejiang University's English-taught pages, for example, mention 70% in the science subjects.
So the answer is: 60% is the safest target, because it matches the earlier PM&DC condition and many university minimums, but it may not get you into the stronger ones. Competitive universities in big cities tend to want more. If your marks sit close to 60%, shortlist universities that publish a 60% minimum and ask the admissions office to confirm in writing.
FSc marks are one filter. The university also looks at your transcript, any entrance score, and sometimes an interview. Do not assume marks alone decide the offer.
Is there an age limit for MBBS in China?
Yes, but it depends on the university. Tongji University's MBBS plan sets the range at 18 to 25, no older than 25 on 31 December of the enrolment year. Dalian Medical University also uses 18 to 25, and press summaries of Capital Medical University's page show a wider range. On our university pages, the common range is 17 to 25 at enrolment. A few allow up to 28. One page states 18 to 21 for men and 18 to 22 for women and says it is strictly enforced.
If you apply through the Chinese Government Scholarship, embassy notices for 2026/2027 set the undergraduate limit at under 25 and require a high school graduate. Check campuschina.org for the next cycle, since the age limit can change.
Applicants under 18 need extra paperwork. Tongji, for example, asks for guardian documents from applicants under 18. If you are close to a limit, ask the university before applying, because the cut-off date (31 December, 31 August or the start of the term) differs.
Can A-level and O-level students apply?
Yes. Chinese universities generally ask for a high school graduation certificate, and our pages list "HSSC, A-Levels or O-Levels equivalent" for several programmes. The real issue is on the PM&DC side.
PM&DC's earlier 14 May 2026 notice said "FSc (Pre-Medical) or equivalent with minimum 60% marks". For Cambridge students, the equivalent is decided by IBCC. IBCC's published criteria for the Pre-Medical group list O-level subjects including English, Urdu, Islamiyat, Pakistan Studies, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology, plus A-level Physics, Chemistry and Biology. If you took Computer Science or ICT in place of Biology at O level, IBCC gives SSC Science equivalence but not HSSC Pre-Medical equivalence. That can block you.
Practical steps for A-level students:
- Get your IBCC equivalence certificate as early as you can. Our IBCC attestation and equivalence guide explains the process.
- Check that the equivalent percentage reaches 60% on the IBCC formula. A pending review of the formula was reported in Pakistan in 2026, so ask what applies to your batch.
- Confirm Physics, Chemistry and Biology are all in your A-level set.
- Ask PM&DC whether any admission test is still needed for you. The 2024-25 guidelines mention SAT-II (550 per subject) or foreign MCAT or UCAT for students whose intermediate was completed abroad, but MDCAT is now exempt for foreign admission, so confirm whether that route still matters.
Is IELTS required, and can I apply without it?
It depends on the university. Many Chinese medical universities teach MBBS in English but do not demand IELTS. Among our university pages, a large group state "no IELTS or TOEFL required". Others do ask, and usually at the level of IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 or TOEFL 70 to 90. Tongji's MBBS plan asks for IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 85, but exempts native English speakers and graduates of English-medium high schools. Fudan's guide shows a similar waiver for English-medium schools.
What you need to prepare:
- If you studied in an English-medium school, ask for a certificate or a medium of instruction letter. See our guide on the English proficiency certificate and MOI letter.
- If your target needs a score, ask the admissions office which tests it accepts before you book one. Our comparison of IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and Duolingo can help you choose.
- If a university says "no IELTS", get that line in an email from the admissions office.
Without IELTS, you can still apply to universities that waive it. Do not assume a waiver is universal.
Do I need to sit CSCA, HSK or another entrance test?
This is where most confusion comes from, so here is the short version.
- CSCA is China's standardised exam for international undergraduate applicants. Official guidance says that from 2026 and 2027, international undergraduate applicants to universities taking part in the Chinese Government Scholarship must sit it. Other applicants may take it too.
- Mathematics is required for all programmes. For medicine, applicants must take at least one of Physics or Chemistry. Individual university pages differ: some ask for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, others Mathematics and Chemistry.
- Applicants to fully English-taught undergraduate programmes are exempt from the Professional Chinese test.
- The exam fee is 450 yuan for one subject and 700 yuan for two or more. Sessions run five times a year (January, March, April, June and December). Register at the official site, csca.cn.
Some universities do not ask for CSCA yet. Others treat it as compulsory. Read our CSCA exam guide for dates and subjects, and which Chinese universities do not require CSCA yet if the timeline is tight.
HSK is the Chinese language test. English-taught MBBS programmes do not usually ask for it at admission, but many require some HSK level during the course for clinical years and hospital work. Our page data shows no HSK at admission for several universities, HSK 3 or 4 by the end of Year 1 for others, and a few that require HSK 4 before graduation. See the HSK exam guide. This also connects to PM&DC's local-language condition, so ask what proof PM&DC will accept for a Chinese language course.
Can I apply with a gap year?
There is no gap-year rule in the PM&DC notices I read, and Chinese universities do not publish a single national limit. Some universities ask for a short explanation, and a few set an age cap that works as a gap limit in practice.
The bigger limits are the age cap and how the university views your gap. You no longer need to check whether an old MDCAT result is still valid, because PM&DC has exempted MDCAT for admission abroad. Ask your target university in writing.
If you have a gap, prepare a clear explanation letter. Our study gap explanation letter guide shows what visa officers and admissions offices expect.
What documents are needed to apply?
Requirements vary, but the list is usually close to this one. Tongji's MBBS plan, for example, asks for:
- Passport information page with enough validity
- High school graduation certificate and official transcripts
- English proficiency proof, unless waived
- Physical health report from the last six months, or a valid Chinese visa
- Personal statement
- Application fee receipt
- Guardian documents if you are under 18
For Pakistani applicants, add the IBCC-attested certificates and the MOFA step, and a police character certificate if requested. Our documents checklist covers attestation in detail. Add your CSCA score report if the university asks for it and your PM&DC student registration certificate if PM&DC still asks for it (confirm at pmdc.pk).
After admission, the university issues an admission letter and a JW202 form, which you use to apply for the student visa. Do not book flights or pay full fees before you have the admission letter in your hands. Our step-by-step guide to applying for MBBS in China shows the order of steps.
Does MOE listing change my eligibility?
It does not change your marks requirement, but it changes which universities you should consider. Our MOE-listed universities page shows institutions on the Chinese Ministry of Education list, which matters because Chinese rules approve only a limited set of medical schools to teach international MBBS students in English. PM&DC's recognition rules separately decide whether your degree can lead to a licence.
Always verify a university in three places: the Chinese Ministry of Education approval, the programme language, and the PM&DC conditions on registration and the NRE. A university that fails one of them can cost you years. Our MBBS in China hub collects the university pages and fees in one place. On those pages, the annual cost per university ranges from roughly RMB 18,700 to RMB 87,550, so eligibility is only part of choosing well.
Eligibility checklist before you pay anyone
- FSc Pre-Medical (or IBCC equivalence) at 60% or higher, the safest target while the PM&DC condition is unconfirmed.
- No MDCAT needed for admission abroad. Keep a copy of PM&DC Public Notice No. Exam-59/2026/350.
- Written confirmation from PM&DC on whether registration on srf.pmdc.pk is still required, and completion of it before you leave if it is.
- Age within the university's limit on its cut-off date.
- English proof or a written waiver.
- CSCA subjects and dates, if the university asks.
- Attested documents ready.
- Written confirmation from the university of each point above.
Titans Abroad does not charge a consultation fee, and we only recommend universities that are PMDC/PMC-approved and, for China, MOE-listed. If your case is borderline, such as an A-level profile or a gap, you can apply through Titans Abroad and we will tell you honestly whether a programme fits.
Frequently asked questions
What are the eligibility criteria for MBBS in China?
Chinese universities set the admission criteria: FSc (Pre-Medical) or equivalent, usually with at least 60%, an age limit (often 18 to 25), English proof where asked, and an entrance exam such as CSCA at many universities. PM&DC no longer requires MDCAT for admission abroad (since 5 October 2026). Whether its earlier 60% FSc and online registration conditions still apply is unconfirmed, so check pmdc.pk. University rules vary, so confirm them with each admissions office.
How many marks are required for MBBS in China?
No MDCAT mark is needed. The earlier PM&DC notice set 60% in FSc Pre-Medical, and many universities on our pages ask for 60% in HSSC, while some ask for 70% overall or in science subjects. Meeting 60% makes you eligible, but stronger universities may prefer higher marks.
Can A-level students apply?
Yes. Chinese universities generally accept A-level and O-level certificates as high school proof. You still need IBCC equivalence that reaches the 60% FSc Pre-Medical level used by most universities and by PM&DC's earlier notice, with Physics, Chemistry and Biology in your subjects. Start the IBCC process early because delays can hold up your application.
Is there an age limit for MBBS in China?
Yes, and it differs by university. Tongji uses 18 to 25 as of 31 December of the enrolment year, and our university pages mostly show 17 to 25. The Chinese Government Scholarship asks for undergraduates under 25. Ask the university which cut-off date it uses.
Is IELTS required?
Not at every university. Several Chinese medical universities on our pages say no IELTS or TOEFL is required, while others ask for IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 or similar. Many give a waiver to graduates of English-medium schools. Get the university's rule in writing before you decide.
Is MDCAT required for China?
No. Chinese universities do not ask for it, and since 5 October 2026 PM&DC no longer requires it for Pakistani students seeking admission into foreign medical and dental institutions. MDCAT is still required for colleges inside Pakistan. Your degree still needs a PM&DC-recognised institution and the NRE to lead to a licence.
Can I apply with a gap year?
Often yes, but there is no single national rule. Universities decide, and some enforce an age cap that limits how long a gap can be. Check the age cap and prepare a gap explanation letter. Ask the university in writing.
What documents are needed to apply?
Usually a passport, high school certificate and transcripts, English proof unless waived, a health report, a personal statement, the application fee receipt and, for many, a CSCA score. Pakistani students also need IBCC and MOFA attested documents. Each university publishes its own list, so use theirs.
Final check: confirm the rule that applies to you
MBBS in China eligibility for Pakistani students is simple at the national level and varied at the university level. Check which PM&DC conditions remain (MDCAT is no longer one), confirm the FSc and registration points with PM&DC, then match your age, English proof and CSCA plans to one university at a time. When a website gives you a single clean answer for every university, treat it with caution and ask the admissions office for the current rule in writing.
