The MBBS in China total cost for a Pakistani student usually lands between about RMB 185,000 and RMB 390,000 for the full six years, which is roughly PKR 76 lakh to PKR 1.6 crore at today's exchange rate. That range comes from the fee sheets on our own university pages, and it includes tuition, hostel, insurance and visa extension. It does not include flights, off-campus rent after the hostel years, or your daily living costs. Treat every number below as an example to verify against your university's current prospectus, not as a quote.
Most blogs give you one vague figure like "4 to 10 lakh a year" and stop there. This guide does the opposite. It gives you a line-by-line budget template, shows where each figure should come from, and explains how to plan for the rupee moving against the yuan.
How much does MBBS in China cost in total?
On our China university pages, the main English-medium MBBS fee tables show these spreads:
- Yearly tuition runs from RMB 12,000 at the cheapest provincial colleges to RMB 75,000 at a few top-ranked universities, with a typical figure around RMB 25,000 to 35,000.
- Yearly hostel fees run from about RMB 1,000 to RMB 12,000, with a typical figure around RMB 4,600.
- Where a six-year total is stated, it falls between about RMB 184,600 and RMB 387,000.
The cheapest tuition figures usually belong to non-MOE or non-MBBS programmes, so do not shop by tuition alone. Check the university against the MOE-listed universities list first, then compare prices inside that list.
Here are three examples taken from our fee tables. They show how the same six years can cost very different amounts.
| Example | Year 1 (RMB) | Years 2 to 6, each (RMB) | Six-year total (RMB) | Approx. PKR |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lower-cost provincial university | 43,600 | 28,200 | about 184,600 | about 76 lakh |
| Mid-range university | 57,500 | 42,100 | about 268,000 | about 1.1 crore |
| Higher-cost university | 68,000 | 52,600 | about 331,000 | about 1.37 crore |
The PKR column uses about PKR 41.3 per RMB, the market rate shown by a rate-tracking site in mid-October 2026. That is not an official State Bank of Pakistan rate, so check the day's rate with your bank before you plan.
What is included in the yearly fee?
On the fee tables we maintain, the yearly package normally covers four things: tuition, hostel, a visa extension fee and compulsory insurance. In Year 1 it also covers a medical check and a one-time liaison and processing charge. Fees at the Year 1 stage are higher for that reason, and they drop from Year 2.
Do not assume anything else is included. Food, flights, books, local transport, phone data and pocket money are all extra.
The line-by-line budget template
Copy this table into a spreadsheet. Fill the last column from the university's own prospectus or admission letter, not from a consultant's chat message.
| Cost item | When you pay | Example figure | Where to get the real number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application fee | Once, at application | RMB 1,500 on some of our pages, usually non-refundable | University admissions page |
| Admission deposit | Before the admission letter | RMB 7,000 to 16,500 on pages we checked, counted toward Year 1 tuition | Admission offer |
| Tuition | Every year | RMB 25,000 to 35,000 is typical on our pages | Current prospectus fee sheet |
| Hostel | Every year while in the hostel | about RMB 4,600 typical, RMB 1,000 to 12,000 range | Prospectus, plus room type (double, triple) |
| Medical insurance | Every year | RMB 800 per year (RMB 400 per half year) | International office |
| Visa extension or residence permit | Every year | RMB 400 to 800 depending on validity | International office |
| Arrival medical check | Once | RMB 400 on some of our pages; RMB 250 to 600 on university sites | International office |
| Liaison, processing and management charge | Once, Year 1 | about RMB 15,000 on many of our pages | Ask what it covers, in writing |
| Chinese language or foundation course | Once, if the university requires it | about RMB 12,500 on some of our pages | Prospectus |
| Flights | At least once a year | Varies, check current fares | Airline and travel agent |
| Off-campus rent | Clinical years, if no hostel | Varies by city | Seniors at that university |
| Food and daily living | Monthly | Varies by city | Current students |
| Document attestation in Pakistan | Once, before applying | See the section below | IBCC, HEC, MOFA |
Add each row for Year 1, then add a second column for Years 2 to 6. Then add 10 percent as a buffer. If the final number makes your family uncomfortable, you want to know that now, not in Year 3.
Tuition and hostel: the two big lines
Tuition is the largest line, and it is where universities differ most. A Shanghai or Beijing university can charge double what a provincial university charges for the same degree title. That does not make the expensive one twice as good for you. It does mean you should look at what you actually get: teaching hospitals, English-medium clinical teaching, and recognition by PM&DC.
Hostel prices depend on the room. A double room can cost nearly double a triple room at the same university. Some universities also move students off campus once they reach the clinical hospitals, as on one of our pages where Years 4 to 6 are in apartments near the hospital campus. That rent is not in the fee table, so ask for the real figure before you accept an offer.
Insurance, residence permit and medical check
China requires international students to hold medical insurance for the whole stay. A China Daily guide from September 2025 puts the standard premium at RMB 800 per year, which matches what several universities charge. It covers hospital stays up to RMB 400,000 but only in public hospitals, and it excludes pre-existing conditions. You can read the details in the China Daily insurance guide.
The residence permit is separate from the visa. Once you arrive on an X1 visa, you convert it into a residence permit at the local exit and entry office. University pages such as Tongji University's international student page list RMB 400 for permits valid up to one year and RMB 800 for one to two years. Other universities list slightly different amounts, so use your own university's figure.
The arrival medical check is also priced by the local health authority. University sites we found listed anything from RMB 250 to RMB 600, depending on the city and the tests included.
Do Pakistani students pay a visa fee?
According to the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan's visa instructions (updated October 2024), ordinary Pakistani passport holders are exempt from Chinese visa fees. You may still pay a service charge to the visa application centre, and the embassy page does not set that figure. Check the centre's current notice. For the X1 student visa, the embassy asks for the JW201 or JW202 form, a copy of your admission letter, and either a scholarship award or proof of funds.
The proof-of-funds figure the embassy gave is US$2,500 per academic year or the equivalent in rupees, with a closing balance that covers the whole study period. Our guide on bank statements and proof of funds explains how families usually prepare this.
Is a Chinese-language year or HSK course an extra cost?
It can be. Some English-medium MBBS programmes start with a foundation or language course, and on a few of our pages that course costs around RMB 12,500 on arrival, separate from the Year 1 package. Other programmes build the language into the first years.
Sources disagree on how much Chinese you need. An older university FAQ says English-medium MBBS students do not need an HSK certificate. A more recent advisory from the Indian Embassy in Beijing says students must reach HSK-4 for clinical teaching or they will not receive the degree. The safe assumption is that you will study Chinese through the course and need it in hospitals. Our HSK guide explains the levels, and the CSCA guide covers the admission test many universities now ask for.
Flights: what to budget
I could not find a reliable 2026 fare, so I will not invent one. News reports from 2023 put a PIA Islamabad to Beijing return ticket at about RMB 3,620 to RMB 5,685, and in May 2024 PIA announced a 20 percent discount and a 60 kg baggage allowance for students going to China. Those offers may have ended. Check current fares and baggage rules before you book.
Budget for at least one return trip a year, and an extra emergency ticket in your six-year plan. Students from Pakistan often fly home every summer, which adds up over six years.
Attestation and documents in Pakistan
Before you apply, your Matric and FSc documents need attestation. A 2026 report quoting a Senate reply gave IBCC fees of Rs 1,200 per original certificate and Rs 600 per copy, and HEC fees above that level. Fees change, so confirm them with the offices themselves. Our IBCC attestation guide walks through the order of steps. Keep these costs in your budget, as they are small compared with tuition but they come first.
How do I plan for the rupee moving?
Your fees are in yuan, and your savings are in rupees. If the rupee weakens against the yuan, every instalment costs more in PKR. Using the mid-range example above (about RMB 268,000), a change of just PKR 1 in the RMB rate moves the six-year total by about PKR 2.7 lakh.
Here is a practical way to plan:
- Convert the whole six-year budget at today's rate, then add 10 to 15 percent.
- Split it into yearly instalments in RMB, not one big PKR number.
- Keep the first two years' money ready in advance, since those carry the one-time costs.
- If a family has a spare lump sum, ask your bank about holding part of it in foreign currency, where the rules allow.
- Recheck the rate every time you send money.
The State Bank of Pakistan's 2015 circular for studies abroad let banks remit fees directly to the institution, up to US$70,000 per student per calendar year, usually against an admission letter and a cost sheet. See the SBP press release. Some banks have been stricter than the circular at times, so ask your bank which documents it wants before the first payment.
Hidden costs and how to avoid surprises
The extras families complain about are rarely in the fee sheet. Watch for these:
- A "service fee" or "liaison charge" that is not explained. Ask for a written list of what it covers.
- Fees that are quoted in dollars by a consultant but charged in RMB by the university.
- Hostel prices quoted for a four-bed room when you will be placed in a two-bed room.
- Rent for clinical years.
- Textbooks, uniforms and lab fees.
- Re-exam and retake fees if you fail a subject.
- Extra tuition if your course is extended beyond the standard period.
Our guide on spotting a fake study-abroad consultant covers the red flags, including cash payments with no receipt and guaranteed admission.
Is there a cheaper MOE-listed university?
Yes. On our pages, some provincial and western-region universities have six-year totals in the RMB 170,000 to RMB 235,000 range, while top-tier city universities go well above RMB 330,000. Look at the MOE-listed universities and sort by total cost, then check recognition, clinical hospitals and city climate. A cheaper degree that you cannot finish or register is the most expensive choice of all.
Cheap does not always mean small. It can also mean a less developed region, colder winters, fewer international students, or fewer English-speaking patients in clinical years. Weigh these before you decide.
How does the cost compare with Russia, Georgia and Azerbaijan?
China is not always the cheapest. On our Georgia pages, yearly tuition ranges from US$2,000 to US$8,000, with a median near US$3,200. On our Azerbaijan pages, it ranges from US$2,500 to US$7,000. Russian costs vary by city, so see our Russia page for current figures. Our self-funded MBBS cost comparison lines these up in one table.
Cost is only one part. The recognition process, language, clinical exposure and the licensing exam you must pass in Pakistan should shape your decision just as much.
What about scholarships?
A scholarship can change the whole budget. Some Chinese scholarships cover tuition, accommodation and a stipend, but they are competitive and MBBS places are limited. Read our guide to fully funded MBBS scholarships before you assume you will win one, and always plan a self-funded budget as a backup.

Frequently asked questions
How much does MBBS in China cost in total for a Pakistani student?
On our university fee tables, six-year totals run from about RMB 185,000 to RMB 390,000. That is roughly PKR 76 lakh to PKR 1.6 crore at around PKR 41.3 per RMB. It covers tuition, hostel, insurance and visa extension, but not flights, rent after the hostel years or daily living costs.
What is the MBBS in China fee in PKR per year?
A typical year costs about RMB 31,000 to RMB 60,000, depending on the university, which is about PKR 13 lakh to PKR 25 lakh at PKR 41.3 per RMB. Year 1 is higher because of one-time charges. Always convert the university's current RMB fee on the day you pay.
Are hostel and food included in the tuition fee?
No. Tuition and hostel are listed as separate lines on the fee sheets we maintain, and food is not included in either. You pay for meals yourself, usually at the campus canteen or nearby restaurants. Ask your university what a room type costs and whether hostel is guaranteed in the clinical years.
What extra costs come after the offer letter?
Expect the deposit, flights, the arrival medical check, residence permit, insurance, and sometimes a language or foundation course. Pakistani students are exempt from the Chinese visa fee, but a visa centre may charge a service fee. Ask for a written list of every charge before you pay.
Is there a cheaper MOE-listed university in China?
Yes. Provincial and western-region universities on our pages have six-year totals from roughly RMB 170,000 to RMB 235,000. Compare them on recognition, hospitals and city as well as price. The lowest tuition figures often belong to non-MOE or non-MBBS programmes.
Can fees increase during the six years?
It is possible. We found no reports of a national rise in international tuition, but each university sets its own fees and can revise them. Many fee sheets say fees are subject to change. Ask whether the fee is fixed for the programme, get the answer in writing, and keep a buffer.
How much money do I need to show for the visa?
The Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, in its October 2024 instructions, asks for a scholarship award or proof of US$2,500 per academic year or the rupee equivalent. The closing bank balance should cover the whole study period. Confirm the current requirement before you apply, since embassy rules can change.
Is MBBS in China cheaper than Russia or Georgia?
Not always. Georgia's yearly tuition on our pages is often lower, between US$2,000 and US$8,000, while many Chinese programmes cost more per year. The right answer depends on the university, the city and your recognition and licensing plan.
The practical takeaway
The MBBS in China total cost is not one number. It is a range, and your own number depends on the university, the hostel, the exchange rate and the extras. Build the line-by-line budget, fill every row from official fee sheets, add a buffer, and check recognition before you pay a single deposit. For the next step, read our MBBS in China hub and the PMDC registration guide so the plan covers the whole road, not just the fees.
