Hubei University of Medicine(HUM)

Hubei University of Medicine (HUM) was founded in 1965 as Wuhan Medical College Yunyang School, established in a remote mountainous area by a team of 54 professionals selected from Wuhan Medical College. The institution relocated to Shiyan City in 1967 and underwent several renamings before adopting its current name in May 2010, incorporating multiple health institutions through 1998 including Shiyan Health School and Shiyan Nursing School.

HUM is a Double First-Class Hubei Province construction initiative university and a pilot institution for the National Excellent Doctor Training Plan. Academic structure includes 18 schools (Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and others), 15,000+ full-time students (400+ international from 40+ countries), 908 full-time faculty (180 professors, 277 associate professors), 3 provincial Level-1 key disciplines, 1 national key discipline, 30 provincial key disciplines, 13 provincial key laboratories, 10 research institutes and 4 master's degree programs.

HUM's Clinical Medicine discipline is ranked in the global ESI top-1% - a strong academic credential that places HUM above many MOE-listed and non-MOE institutions. The international MBBS programme is PMDC approved, WHO listed, and WFME and ECFMG recognised. The 5 affiliated hospitals (all Level-3, the highest classification in China) collectively process 6 million outpatient and 300,000 inpatient cases annually across 7,500 beds, with 43 additional Grade 3A teaching hospitals.

HUM's 6-year Clinical Medicine MBBS programme is English-medium (Year 1 is a Chinese language foundation year): Year 1 is dedicated to Chinese language study with HSK-4 required within Year 1 per university policy. Failure to pass HSK-4 prevents advancement to the 5-year clinical curriculum. The programme is specifically designated as a pilot institution for the Excellent Doctor Training and Education Plan - a national distinction that reflects HUM's commitment to medical education quality.

Clinical training utilises 5 Level-3 affiliated hospitals (all the highest classification in China) collectively processing 6 million outpatient and 300,000 inpatient cases annually across 7,500 beds. Taihe Hospital is recognised as a National People Trusting Hospital and houses a unique Embryonic Stem Cell Research Centre in the region. 43 additional Grade 3A teaching/practice hospitals provide further clinical exposure. Anesthesiology and Nursing are designated as National Distinguished Specialties.

Shiyan is located in northwestern Hubei Province, bordering Henan to the northeast, Chongqing to the southwest, and Shaanxi to the north and west. The city was purpose-built in the 1960s as part of China's Third Front construction programme, when strategic industries were established in remote interior locations. This results in a dramatic landscape of mountain-ringed valleys carved into the mountains of northwestern Hubei. Shiyan is home to Dongfeng Motor Corporation and was named one of China's top ten most livable cities.

The surrounding region features exceptional natural attractions: Wudang Mountain (UNESCO World Heritage Site and sacred Taoist mountain), Danjiangkou Reservoir (the largest artificial freshwater lake in Asia), and Shennongjia Forest (UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site). Food expenses typically run 1,000-1,200 RMB monthly. Campus hostels include 2-, 3- and 4-share rooms; Muslim canteens are available on campus and nearby. The Basic Medical Experimentation Centre runs 230 standard experiments; the Clinical Skills Centre spans 6,500 square metres with simulation and animal surgery labs.
