Hubei Minzu University traces its educational roots to 1938 when Hubei Provincial Lianzhong Rural Normal School was established. Over decades of development and name changes, it merged with Enshi Medical College (founded 1958) in 1998 to form the current comprehensive university. In November 2018, it was officially renamed Hubei Minzu University. The university is a key provincial institution jointly administered by the Hubei Provincial Government and the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, supported by counterpart universities including Sichuan University and Central China Normal University.
The university operates 4 campuses in Enshi (Guihuayuan, Wuyangba, Tuqiaoba, Huangjiamao) with a total campus area of over 1,600 mu. HBMZU has 20,000+ full-time students, 1,209 full-time teachers (441 with doctoral degrees, 131 professors), 19 colleges and departments offering 50 undergraduate majors across 10 disciplines, 8 first-level academic master's programs and 39 second-level academic master's programs. Joint doctoral programs run with Minzu University of China.
International students have been enrolled since 2013 with cohorts from Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia and other countries. International partnerships span 20+ universities in the USA, UK, Australia, Japan, South Korea and elsewhere. The library holds 2.48 million books plus 3.3 million electronic books; teaching and research equipment is worth 385 million RMB. Critically for South Asian students, a dedicated Muslim cafeteria operates on campus.

3 Hospitals
HBMZU's 6-year MBBS programme dedicates Year 1 to Chinese language (Mandarin) study; students must pass HSK Level 4 by the end of Year 1 to be promoted to the Clinical Medicine program (Years 2-5). HSK-4 is a higher requirement than the HSK-3 required at some other non-MOE universities. From Year 2 onwards, English is the primary medium for core medical subjects, with Chinese used for clinical communication during hospital rotations.
Clinical training spans 3 Class-A tertiary affiliated hospitals - the Affiliated Minzu University Hospital, Enshi Prefecture Central Hospital and Enshi Prefecture Ethnic Hospital (TCM). The standard Year 6 internship is completed in China at these affiliated hospitals; students wishing to complete the internship outside China pay an additional 8,000 RMB fee to the university. Only 50 international MBBS seats are available per intake, creating a small-cohort learning environment.
Faculty strength: Faculty with strong doctoral representation (441 doctoral degree holders, 131 professors). Joint doctoral programs with Minzu University of China and international partnerships with 20+ universities globally.
Affiliated Hospitals and Clinical Training
3 Class-A tertiary affiliated hospitals (the highest tier in China's hospital grading system) provide clinical training - including TCM exposure at the Enshi Prefecture Ethnic Hospital.

The prefecture is home to the Tujia and Miao ethnic minorities, giving the city and university a distinctly multicultural character.
For international students, Enshi offers an affordable cost of living, a safe and peaceful environment and a scenic campus setting. The city has a good range of halal food options - reinforced by the dedicated Muslim cafeteria on campus, a significant practical advantage for Pakistani and other Muslim students. Enshi Xujiaping Airport connects the city to major Chinese cities.
Student life: Muslim cafeteria on campus (rare for non-MOE universities); 4 campuses; on-campus furnished double-room dormitories (mandatory residence); ATMs, supermarket, hospital and study areas; CCTV and 24-hour security; common kitchen and laundry; sports facilities.

Important Admission Requirements
MOE Listed vs Non-MOE: What it Means for You
Hubei Minzu University is a Non-MOE listed university for the international MBBS programme. The course is English medium (with Year 1 dedicated to Chinese language foundation), with HSK-4 required by the end of Year 1. PMDC, WHO, ECFMG, WCAME, WFME and WDOMS recognition mean Pakistani and globally licensed pathways remain open, but applicants who want a fully English-medium MOE-listed programme should compare against MOE-listed universities in this guide. Confirm current PMDC/PMC NOC status with Titans Abroad before applying.
Language Requirement: HSK
HBMZU requires international MBBS students to pass HSK Level 4 by the end of Year 1 to be promoted to the Clinical Medicine program. This is higher than the HSK-3 required at some other non-MOE universities. Year 1 is fully dedicated to Chinese language study. From Year 2, core medical subjects are taught in English with Chinese used for clinical communication. Begin HSK preparation 3-6 months before arrival.
Pakistan, India and Bangladesh Recognition
HBMZU is PMDC approved for Pakistani graduates, who are eligible to sit the NRE/NLE licensing examination after MBBS completion. Indian applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese medical universities generally do not meet current NMC (India) criteria for FMGE/NExT eligibility under the 2021 NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate regulations; verify the latest NMC requirements directly with the National Medical Commission before applying. NEET remains mandatory for any Indian student studying MBBS abroad. Bangladeshi applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese programmes are not commonly included on BMDC's recognised foreign institutions list; verify the current BMDC list directly before applying.
