MBBS in China under 18 is possible in some cases, but there is no single minimum age that applies to every university. Each university sets its own age window, and a student who is still 17 on the start date usually needs a guardian in China and extra paperwork. Our directory lists 17 as the lower limit for several universities and 18 for others. Always get the age rule in writing from the university before you pay any fee.
This guide is for parents of a 16 or 17 year old who finished FSc early. It covers how universities set minimum age, the guardian documents they ask for, the visa position and what to check before you apply.
Can a 17 year old do MBBS in China?
Yes, at some universities. Whether a 17 year old can do MBBS in China depends on three things: the age window the university publishes, the applicant's age on a fixed date, and whether the family can provide a guardian in China.
The date matters as much as the number. One university may count age on 31 December of the admission year. Another may ask for guardian papers if the student is under 18 on 1 September. These dates can put the same child on different sides of the line at two universities.
In our experience, most universities our team deals with accept applicants from 16 or 17 and above. Some ask for a guardian letter, an attorney letter or a signed form. That is a team observation, not a rule, and it can change by university and by year.
What is the minimum age for MBBS in China?
There is no one national figure we can give you as a rule. What we can show is what individual universities state. The table below uses the age field in our directory for universities where we hold one. Fees are the yearly recurring total from year 2 per our directory (tuition, hostel, visa extension and insurance). Year 1 is higher because of one-time charges. Confirm the current fee with the university.
| University | City | Age at enrolment, per our directory | Yearly fee from year 2 | MOE-listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| China Medical University | Shenyang | 17 to 24 | RMB 52,600 | Yes |
| Jilin University | Changchun | 17 to 25 | RMB 40,600 | Yes |
| Capital Medical University | Beijing | 17 to 25 | RMB 59,100 | Yes |
| Dalian Medical University | Dalian | 17 to 28 | RMB 52,000 | Yes |
| Shihezi University | Shihezi | 17 to 25 | RMB 36,600 | Yes |
| China Three Gorges University | Yichang | 18 to 25 | RMB 36,900 | Yes |
| Harbin Medical University | Harbin | 18 to 21 (male) or 18 to 22 (female), listed as strictly enforced | RMB 37,000 | Yes |
Only seven universities in our directory carry an age field, so the table is not a full list. For any other university, ask. The wording in our directory reads "at time of enrolment", but the exact counting date is not stated, so ask each university which date it uses.
Look at Harbin Medical University in particular. Its listed window is narrow and described as strictly enforced. A student who is a little older than the window, or a student who is 17, should not count on an exception there.
Why the numbers differ
Universities in China admit international students under national rules but set their own conditions. A City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan) page and a Baotou college page both describe 18 as the general baseline for international applicants and cite Ministry of Education notice Jiao Wai Han [2020] No.12. We could not open the Ministry text itself, so treat that as secondhand and ask the university.
The Tongji University School of Medicine shows how messy this can be. Its 2024 recruitment plan says applicants should be between 18 and 25 by 31 December of the admission year. The same page also says that a guardian must give supplementary materials if the applicant is under 18 on 31 August of the application year. Both lines appear on the page, so even one university can read in two directions. Tongji is not in our directory, and the plan is from 2024, so check its current notice.
Do I need a guardian letter if I am under 18?
For many universities, yes. Several Chinese university guidelines say a student under 18 needs a guardian living in China. The guardian is a person who can act for the student on the spot, since the university will not take on that role.
Here is what the sources we checked say. They are university documents, not a single national rulebook.
- Beijing Normal University: applicants under 18 on 1 September 2026 must have a guardian in China, and it asks for a notarial certificate of guardian from a notary office in the campus location.
- Duke Kunshan University: the temporary guardian must be a Chinese citizen, or a foreigner living in China who will stay for the whole guardianship period. It says guardianship ends when the student turns 18.
- USTC (Hefei): asks for a guardian statement and says the guardian must stay in Hefei during the studies.
- Tongji: asks for guardian documents that differ depending on whether the guardian is a Chinese citizen or a foreign national.
The common pattern is this. The parents sign a letter that entrusts a named guardian. The letter is usually translated into Chinese and notarised or authenticated, and the guardian signs a statement in China. Which steps are needed, and which notary, depends on the university. A Dongguan university page also says a minor's guardian must be living in China and that the letter must be certified or notarised and come with a Chinese translation.
These examples are not MBBS universities from our list, apart from Tongji. They show what a Chinese university may ask for. They do not show what your university will ask for. Request the guardian checklist in writing.
Who can act as guardian?
Sources differ. Most say a Chinese citizen or a foreigner with valid residence in China. One source we found asked for a foreign guardian with a work visa, not just residence papers. Some ask for proof of stable income. One asks for a bank deposit from a Chinese guardian. Ask whether a relative, an older cousin studying in China or a family friend would be accepted.
Do not assume the university will be the guardian. Under Decree No. 42 (Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Public Security, effective July 2017), universities cannot take legal custody of minors, as quoted by Duke Kunshan. That is a secondhand description, so read it as background only.
Can an under 18 student get a China student visa?
Yes, minors do get student visas, but the file is heavier. The official Chinese visa application centre page for Karachi lists the standard X1 documents for study of more than 180 days, and we saw no separate under 18 section on that page. Other Chinese visa centre pages for different countries carry extra rules for minors, such as parents' passport copies, a birth certificate and a signed form. We could not open the Pakistan-specific minor rules, so ask the visa centre directly.
The standard X1 list from the Karachi centre includes:
- a passport valid for more than six months with a blank visa page
- a copy of the National ID card, front and back
- a printout of the JW201 or JW202 confirmation form
- a photocopy of the admission letter
- proof of funds of US$2,500 per academic year, or a scholarship letter
- a police character certificate for applicants aged 10 and above
X1 applicants must attend an interview in person, and holders must apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entering China. A consular officer can ask for more documents. For the full process, read our X1 visa and JW202 guide.
A practical point: the JW202 form usually comes from the university after admission. One university guidance note says the form is issued only after a temporary guardian is confirmed. So sort out the guardian first, because it can delay the visa chain.
Documents to prepare for a student under 18
Start with the normal MBBS file. Our documents checklist for MBBS in China covers transcripts, passport, photos and the medical form. For a minor, add:
- Birth certificate (B-form or birth certificate) and both parents' CNIC and passport copies.
- A parental entrustment letter naming the guardian in China.
- A Chinese translation and notarisation or authentication, if the university asks for it.
- The guardian's passport, residence permit or ID, and income or deposit proof if requested.
- The university's own guardian form or statement.
Some universities ask for attested education documents. Do not assume yours does not. Ask the university to confirm the attestation steps in writing. Our guides on IBCC attestation and the police certificate and medical report explain those steps.
Does age affect PM&DC registration?
We found no age rule for foreign medical graduates in the PM&DC material we checked. The rules we did find concern the institution. A July 2026 PM&DC public notice says Pakistani nationals are eligible for the NRE only if their primary qualification is from an institution recognised by ECFMG. A June 2026 report on PM&DC conditions mentions a five-year allopathic degree, at least 6,200 hours of study and 80 percent attendance, but nothing on age.
So an early start does not by itself cause a registration problem. What matters is the university. Check it as explained in how to verify PMDC-recognised universities in China. Our directory flags are labelled "listed as PMDC-approved in our directory". Confirm on pmdc.pk and search.wdoms.org.
MDCAT and a young applicant
Since the PM&DC public notice No. Exam-59/2026/350 of 5 October 2026, MDCAT is not required for Pakistani students seeking admission to foreign medical institutions. This helps a 17 year old who has not sat MDCAT. MDCAT is still required for colleges inside Pakistan, and the NEB assessment, the NRE and graduation from a PM&DC-recognised institution still apply later. Other May 2026 conditions, such as FSc marks and srf.pmdc.pk registration, are unconfirmed after the notice, so check pmdc.pk. Read our notice explainer for the details.
Is it safe to send a 17 year old to China?
Safety depends on the support around the student more than on the country. A 17 year old is a first-time traveller, often living away from home and in a language they do not speak. Parents should look at four things.
- Who is the guardian, and how close do they live to the campus?
- Is the hostel on campus, and are there rules on curfew and visitors?
- Is there a Pakistani student community, halal food and a clear emergency contact?
- Does the family have a plan for money, health insurance and flights home?
Our guides on safety for daughters studying abroad and hostel and halal food in China give more detail. If you are worried about agents, read the risks and myths of MBBS in China.
Some families decide to wait a year. Waiting gives the student time to turn 18, removes the guardian step and may open more universities. It is a fair choice, and a one-year delay is not a failure. Our 2027 intake guide shows what to prepare in the meantime.
Fees and costs to plan for
An under 18 student has the same tuition as an adult student, plus extra costs for the guardian paperwork. Notarisation, translation and courier fees for guardian documents are not in our directory fee, so ask your guardian and notary for quotes. Funds proof for the visa is listed by the Karachi centre as US$2,500 per academic year, and the university may ask for more. See our total cost of MBBS in China and proof of funds guide.
Step-by-step plan for parents
- List your child's date of birth and compute age on both 31 December and 1 September of the intake year.
- Shortlist MOE-listed universities from the MBBS in China directory and read each age field.
- Email each university and ask in writing: minimum age, counting date, guardian rule, who can be a guardian and which documents need notarisation.
- Choose and brief the guardian before you apply.
- Prepare the parental letter, translations and notarisation as the university states.
- Apply, wait for the admission notice and JW202, then book the X1 interview.
- Check the eligibility basics in our MBBS in China eligibility guide.
Titans Abroad does not charge a consultation fee, and you can apply here to have your shortlist checked against these age rules. We only recommend universities we can find in the MOE list and ask you to confirm PM&DC status on the official sites.
MBBS in China under 18: the short version
MBBS in China under 18 is allowed at some universities and refused at others. Ask for the age rule, the counting date and the guardian checklist in writing. Verify the university on pmdc.pk and search.wdoms.org, and confirm every fee with the university.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do MBBS in China at 17?
At some universities, yes. Our directory lists a lower age of 17 for several MOE-listed universities, including China Medical University, Jilin University, Capital Medical University, Dalian Medical University and Shihezi University. Others start at 18. Ask the university in writing which date it uses to count age and whether a guardian is needed.
What is the minimum age for MBBS in China?
There is no single figure we can give for every university. The age fields in our directory run from 17 to 18 at the lower end, and the upper limit ranges from 21 or 22 to 28. Some official notices count age on 31 December, others on 1 September. Get the rule and the counting date from your university.
Do I need a guardian letter if I am under 18?
Often yes. University guidelines we read ask for a guardian who lives in China, plus a parental entrustment letter, usually translated and notarised. Beijing Normal University, USTC and Tongji each set their own steps. Ask your MBBS university for its checklist in writing, including which documents need a notary.
Can an under 18 student get a China student visa?
Yes, minors can get X1 study visas, but the file is heavier. The Karachi visa centre lists standard X1 documents, and other Chinese visa centres ask for parents' papers and a birth certificate for minors. Contact the Karachi or Islamabad centre for Pakistan-specific minor rules before booking your interview.
Does age affect PM&DC registration?
We found no age rule for foreign medical graduates in the PM&DC material we checked. The conditions we found concern the institution, such as ECFMG recognition for the NRE. MDCAT is not required for foreign admission since 5 October 2026. Confirm all current conditions on pmdc.pk.
Is it safe to send a 17 year old to China?
It can be, if the support is solid. Check who the guardian is, how close they live to campus, whether the hostel is on campus, and what the emergency plan is. Many families prefer to wait a year so the student is 18 and the guardian step falls away. Choose what suits your child.
Can a 16 year old apply for MBBS in China?
In our team's experience, some universities accept applicants from 16 and above, usually with a guardian letter or signed form. That is an observation, not a rule. Most of the directory entries we hold show 17 or 18 as the lowest age, so confirm with the specific university before applying.
