The X1 visa China MBBS students need is a single-entry long-term study visa for courses over 180 days. You apply for it at a Chinese visa application centre in Pakistan after your university sends the admission notice and the JW202 form. Once you land in China, you must convert the X1 into a residence permit within 30 days. This guide gives the full sequence, the documents, and the points where sources disagree.

Please check every detail on the visa centre page for your city before you apply. Rules and fees change, and individual universities add their own steps.

The short answer: the five steps in order

  1. Get the offer and the admission notice from your Chinese university.
  2. Receive the JW202 form (self-funded students) or JW201 (Chinese government scholarship students) from the university.
  3. Book an appointment and apply for the X1 visa at the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre or embassy that covers your region.
  4. Travel to China close to your reporting date.
  5. Apply for the residence permit within 30 days of entry.

Everything else in this post is detail on those five steps.

What is the JW202 form?

The JW202 is the "Visa Application for Study in China" form. Your university issues it, and it is the document that lets you apply for the X1 visa. Self-funded students, which covers most Pakistani MBBS applicants, get a JW202. The JW201 goes to students on Chinese government scholarships.

The JW202 is tied to your admission, so you cannot download or fill in a copy yourself. The Karachi visa centre asks for a printout of the online confirmation form (JW201 or JW202) together with a photocopy of the admission letter. Keep both safe, because you also need them after arrival for the residence permit.

Programmes of 30 to 180 days use a different form (DQ) and an X2 visa. A full MBBS runs for years, so it falls under X1 and JW202. If you want the admission side first, read our guide on how to apply for MBBS in China.

What is an X1 visa for China?

X1 is the visa category for study longer than 180 days. It is issued for a single entry and is meant to get you into China so you can convert it to a study residence permit. The residence permit then works as your multiple-entry permission for the study period.

The consular officer makes the final decision on issuance, validity, length of stay and number of entries. Do not assume that your visa will look like another student's.

Students who enter China on a visa exemption cannot apply for a study residence permit from inside the country. According to Shanghai guidance for international students, they must leave and come back on an X1 or X2 visa first. That is one more reason to apply for the X1 at home.

Documents for the X1 visa from Pakistan

The Chinese visa centre page for Karachi lists the following for long-term study. Islamabad and other centres may differ slightly, so check yours.

DocumentWhat the visa centre page says
PassportMore than 6 months of validity and at least one blank visa page, plus a copy of the personal information page
National ID cardCopy of the front and back for Pakistani citizens
JW201 or JW202Printout of the online confirmation form
Admission letterPhotocopy of the letter from the Chinese university
Proof of fundsScholarship evidence, or at least US$2,500 per academic year (or the equivalent in rupees), with the closing balance covering the full study period
Police character certificateUpdated, for applicants aged 10 and above. If it has no verifiable QR code, it needs a Pakistan MOFA apostille
InterviewX1 applicants attend in person every time

The consular officer may ask for extra documents or call you in for a further interview. Bring originals and photocopies of everything.

Passport validity: 6 months or 18 months?

Some Pakistani agency guides say 18 months. The official Karachi page says more than six months. Peking University also states six months for its students. Treat 18 months as an unverified claim, but do not run it close. If your passport expires within a year or two, renew it before you apply. A fresh passport avoids arguments and also helps your residence permit.

The medical form

The Karachi page does not list a physical examination form. Chinese universities, however, require the "Physical Examination Record for Foreigners" for the residence permit, and some guides say to bring it for the visa too. The exam can be done in your home country before travel or at a local inspection bureau after you arrive, depending on the university. Ask your admissions office which one they accept, and confirm with the visa centre whether they want it at the counter.

For the Pakistani side of medicals and clearance, see our guide to the police character certificate and medical report.

How much money do I need to show for a China student visa?

The Karachi visa centre page says at least US$2,500 per academic year, or the rupee equivalent, unless you can show scholarship evidence. It adds that the closing bank balance should cover the full study period. Read that carefully. Reading it as US$2,500 once is the usual mistake.

Check the live page when you apply, because the figure is the visa centre's and can change. Your family's statement should be clean, with a clear source of funds. We explain this in detail in our guide to bank statements and proof of funds.

Do not borrow a lump sum for a week and then return it. Officers see that pattern, and it can hurt more than a modest balance that has been there for months.

Which visa centre should I use in Pakistan?

Chinese visa centres operate in Islamabad and Karachi. One guide says Islamabad covers Punjab, KPK, Islamabad, AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan, while Karachi covers Sindh and Balochistan, and that Lahore may take some Punjab applicants. We could not confirm this on an official page, so check which centre accepts your province before you book.

The visa centre accepts only applications made through the online form with a booked appointment. Walk-ins without an appointment are not accepted. Photos should be recent (within the last six months) against a plain white background.

How long does the China student visa take for Pakistanis?

There is no single official figure we could verify for X1 processing in Pakistan. Guides quote a few working days at the counter, but the whole process from admission to visa in hand usually takes several weeks because the university side takes time. One Chinese university estimates four to six weeks for JW202 and visa preparation together.

Plan on the slow side. National Day in early October and the Spring Festival in winter slow offices down. A reasonable rule is to apply as soon as you hold the JW202 and every supporting paper, and not to book flights until the visa is in your passport.

China visa fee for a Pakistani student

A secondary visa-fee source says Pakistani ordinary passport holders are exempt from the Chinese visa fee itself and pay only the visa centre service fee. It lists regular service at about PKR 13,200 and express at about PKR 19,800, but we could not match these to an official schedule. Treat the numbers as a rough guide, and ask the centre for the current charges when you book.

Can I enter China on a tourist visa and convert?

Do not plan on it. Some older forum posts describe conversions from tourist (L) to student status on campus, but they date from before a 2013 rule change, and later posts say conversion is unreliable and often refused. We found no official Chinese source that guarantees conversion.

The safe route is the X1 from Pakistan, using the admission notice and JW202. A failed conversion can leave you with an overstay, a fine, or a forced exit while your seat at the university waits.

What happens after I arrive in China on an X1 visa?

The X1 is not your permit to stay for the whole degree. You must apply for the study residence permit within 30 days of entering China, at the exit and entry administration of the public security office where you will live. The 30 days start on your date of entry, not on your registration date.

Universities generally cannot file the residence permit until you have registered as a student. The documents usually include:

  • your passport with the X1 visa and entry stamp
  • the admission notice
  • the JW202 form
  • the Physical Examination Record for Foreigners (done at an approved inspection bureau if you have not done it already)
  • photos and any forms your international office hands you

Preparing these takes a few days, often three to seven. Because of that, one Chinese university advises against entering China more than three or four days before the move-in date. Arriving a month early can leave you short of time. Missing the deadline can count as illegal stay under the rules some universities quote, so do not leave it to the last week.

Also complete the arrival formalities properly. Our China arrival card guide covers the form you fill in before landing.

Why do China visas get rejected?

We found no published 2026 refusal statistics for Pakistani X1 applicants, so no one can honestly give you a percentage. The common causes in practice are fixable:

  • an incomplete or mismatched file, such as a name spelled differently on the passport, JW202 and bank statement
  • a police certificate without a verifiable QR code and without apostille
  • funds that do not look genuine or do not cover the study period
  • unclear answers in the interview about your course, university and fee payments
  • a passport with too little validity or no blank page

If you are refused, ask what was missing, fix it, and reapply with a clean file. Our guide on why student visas get rejected goes through the next steps.

Where MDCAT and PM&DC fit in

The visa does not involve MDCAT. Since PM&DC public notice No. Exam-59/2026/350 of 5 October 2026, MDCAT is not required for Pakistani students seeking admission to foreign medical institutions. You still need MDCAT for medical colleges inside Pakistan, the NEB assessment to transfer into a Pakistani institution, and the registration exam to practise in Pakistan. Graduating from a PM&DC-recognised institution still matters. Other conditions mentioned earlier in 2026 are unconfirmed after the notice, so confirm them on pmdc.pk. Our notice explainer has the detail.

Before you pay anything to a university, check its status. See how to verify PMDC-recognised universities in China, and the eligibility requirements that apply before the visa stage.

Where Titans Abroad fits

Titans Abroad does not charge a consultation or guidance fee, and JW202 and visa preparation, including embassy interview coaching, is part of the support we list. If you want help with your file, you can apply through our site. The checklist above is enough to do the process yourself, and you should verify every item on the official visa centre page either way.

Frequently asked questions

What is the JW202 form?

The JW202 is the confirmation form for study in China that your university issues to self-funded international students. You need a printout of it, along with the admission letter, for your X1 visa application. You also need it again after arrival to apply for the residence permit, so keep it with your passport.

What is an X1 visa for China?

X1 is the single-entry visa for study longer than 180 days. It gets you into China, and you must then convert it to a study residence permit within 30 days. Courses shorter than 180 days use an X2 visa. A full MBBS always falls under X1.

How long does the China student visa take for Pakistanis?

We found no verified official processing time for Pakistan. Counter processing can be short, but the full path from admission to visa in hand often takes several weeks, mainly because of the JW202 and your own documents. Apply as soon as your file is complete and avoid public holidays in China.

How much money do I need to show for a China student visa?

The Karachi visa centre page says at least US$2,500 per academic year, or the rupee equivalent, unless you show scholarship evidence. The closing balance should cover the full study period. Check the live page before applying, since the amount is set by the visa centre and can change.

Can I enter China on a tourist visa and convert?

Do not rely on it. We found no official source that guarantees conversion, and later forum reports say it is often refused. The safe route is to apply for the X1 visa from Pakistan with your admission notice and JW202. Students who enter on a visa exemption must leave and re-enter on an X1 or X2 before applying for a permit.

What happens after I arrive in China on an X1 visa?

You register at your university, complete the medical examination if you have not already, and apply for the study residence permit within 30 days of entry. Bring your passport, admission notice, JW202 and medical record. The residence permit then replaces the X1 and covers your study period.

Why do China visas get rejected?

Typical causes are mismatched names or documents, a police certificate without a verifiable QR code or apostille, weak proof of funds, short passport validity, and unclear interview answers. We found no published 2026 refusal rates. If refused, find out what was missing, correct it and apply again.

Final check before you book your X1 visa China MBBS appointment

Hold the admission notice and JW202, confirm the document list on the visa centre page for your city, prepare funds for US$2,500 per year or more, and ask your university about the medical form. Travel close to your reporting date, and apply for the residence permit within 30 days. The total cost and money side is in our guide to MBBS in China total cost for Pakistani students.
