The top medical universities in China that take English-taught MBBS students from Pakistan are Fudan, Shanghai Jiao Tong, Zhejiang, Xi'an Jiaotong, Sichuan, Wuhan, Tongji, Southern Medical, Capital Medical, Tianjin Medical, China Medical and Chongqing Medical. All twelve are MOE-listed in our directory. There is no single official "top 10", because every ranking measures something different. This guide shows what each list says, which names recur, and what each school costs.
Fees below are per our directory and are the annual recurring total from year 2 (tuition, hostel, visa extension and insurance). Year 1 is higher because of one-time charges. Confirm the current fee with the university before you pay anything.
Which are the top 10 medical universities in China for international MBBS students?
Here is the shortlist, drawn from our directory. We kept universities that are MOE-listed and whose directory entry cites a named global or national list such as QS, THE, ARWU, CWUR, ESI or the C9 League. The order follows how strongly the cited list places the university, but the lists are not comparable, so treat the order as a guide and not a rank.
| University | City | Annual fee from year 2 (per our directory) | MOE-listed | PMDC flag in our directory | Ranking note from directory |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fudan University | Shanghai | US$11,750 (about RMB 84,700) | Yes | Yes | Directory cites QS top 40 and C9. Highest fee tier. |
| Shanghai Jiao Tong University | Shanghai | US$12,200 (about RMB 87,550) | Yes | No | Directory cites QS #45 and C9. Not flagged PMDC in our directory, so check first. |
| Zhejiang University | Yiwu | US$7,420 (about RMB 53,400) | Yes | Yes | C9. The MBBS runs at the Yiwu campus, not Hangzhou. |
| Xi'an Jiaotong University | Xi'an | US$7,100 (about RMB 50,600) | Yes | Yes | C9. Listed as the first Chinese university to teach MBBS in English (1995). |
| Sichuan University | Chengdu | US$7,400 (about RMB 52,800) | Yes | Yes | Directory cites ARWU #87 and West China Hospital. |
| Wuhan University | Wuhan | US$7,100 (about RMB 51,100) | Yes | Yes | Directory cites QS top 300 and 8 affiliated hospitals. |
| Tongji University | Shanghai | US$7,970 (about RMB 57,400) | Yes | Yes | Directory cites QS #177 and THE #141. Medical school roots go back to 1907. |
| Southern Medical University | Guangzhou | US$8,400 (about RMB 60,600) | Yes | Yes | Directory cites THE top 300 and 15 ESI top 1% disciplines. |
| Capital Medical University | Beijing | US$8,200 (about RMB 59,100) | Yes | Yes | Directory cites ESI top 0.1% in clinical medicine. A 3-month foundation course is paid separately. |
| Tianjin Medical University | Tianjin | US$8,267 (about RMB 61,120) | Yes | Yes | Directory cites CWUR China #88 and ESI clinical medicine. |
| China Medical University | Shenyang | US$7,750 (about RMB 52,600) | Yes | Yes | Directory cites Top 8 in China for clinical medicine. |
| Chongqing Medical University | Chongqing | US$5,020 (about RMB 36,400) | Yes | Yes | Lowest fee in this table. 9th in the 2026 ShanghaiRanking medical table, per the university. |
Two points before you read on. First, this is not our own ranking. We do not rank universities. Second, the PMDC column shows only the flag in our directory. Confirm each university on pmdc.pk and search.wdoms.org. For the verification steps, see how to verify PMDC-recognised universities in China.
Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Tongji Medical College, Wuhan) also belongs on any serious list. Its directory page cites a Double First Class Class A status and 5 Grade III-A hospitals. See HUST Tongji Medical College, at US$6,470 a year from year 2 per our directory.
Why does every list give a different "top medical university in China"?
Each ranking body counts different things. A university can be 20th on one list and 200th on another without anything being wrong. Here is what each system measures.
- QS World University Rankings use reputation surveys, citations and other indicators for the whole university.
- Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings also rank whole universities, with a stronger weight on research and teaching environment.
- ShanghaiRanking has a global list (ARWU) and a separate Best Chinese Universities list that includes a medical category.
- CWUR is another global list, and our directory uses it for some Chinese rank positions.
- ESI is a citation database, not a league table. It tells you whether a subject is in the world top 1% for citations.
Whole-university rankings favour big comprehensive universities. That is why Fudan, Zhejiang and Shanghai Jiao Tong appear high on QS and THE, while a dedicated medical university such as Capital Medical or Chongqing Medical may appear lower on those lists but high in a medical-only table.
What do the global lists say about Chinese universities?
THE's China page, when we checked it in October 2026, showed THE World University Rankings 2027 positions: Tsinghua 11, Peking 13, Zhejiang equal 34, Fudan 38 and Shanghai Jiao Tong 39. Lower down it showed Wuhan equal 121, Huazhong University of Science and Technology equal 191, Xi'an Jiaotong equal 196, Sun Yat-sen equal 205 and Sichuan equal 224. Check THE's China table for the current figures, because positions move every year.
Some positions in our directory come from older editions. For example, the directory lists Chongqing Medical at QS 561 (2024) and Qingdao University at ARWU 401 to 500 (2019 to 2020). Always look at the year attached to a ranking. A number without a year tells you very little.
What does the ShanghaiRanking medical table say?
ShanghaiRanking released its 2026 Best Chinese Universities Ranking on 15 April 2026, with a separate medical category. Chongqing Medical University states on its own site that it placed 9th in that medical table and 81st overall. Other universities report their own positions the same way. We could not retrieve the full official medical table, so we do not give a complete top 10 from it. You can check the table directly at shanghairanking.com.
What does ESI top 1 percent mean?
ESI (Essential Science Indicators) is built from Web of Science citation data. A subject at a university is "ESI top 1%" when its papers' citations place it in the top 1% of institutions worldwide for that field. "Top 1 per mille" or "top 0.1%" is a tighter cut, which is why some directory entries use those phrases.
ESI measures research citations. It does not measure how well MBBS students are taught or how good the clinical training is. Use it as one signal.
Do rankings matter for PMDC registration?
Not directly. PMDC does not register you because your university is high on QS or THE. What matters is whether your institution is recognised for registration and whether you can sit the Pakistani licensing exam later.
Based on PMDC statements reported in 2025 and 2026, the standard combines recognition by the foreign regulator with listing in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) and ECFMG's acceptance. Other reported conditions have been less clear, so read the current notices on pmdc.pk rather than rely on a summary. A top-30 university that is not recognised for registration is a worse choice than a mid-table university that is.
On the entry exam: since PM&DC public notice No. Exam-59/2026/350 (5 October 2026), MDCAT is not required for Pakistani students seeking admission to foreign medical institutions. You still need MDCAT for medical colleges inside Pakistan, the NEB assessment to transfer into a Pakistani institution, the National Registration Exam (NRE) to practise in Pakistan, and a degree from a PM&DC-recognised institution. Other conditions reported in May 2026, such as an FSc percentage and srf.pmdc.pk registration, have not been confirmed after the notice. Check pmdc.pk. Our explainer on the PM&DC notice on MDCAT has the details.
Which top-ranked universities offer English-taught MBBS?
All twelve in the table do, according to the programme details in our directory. Every one lists a 6-year programme of 5 academic years plus a 1-year internship, taught in English. The directory also lists an HSK-4 Chinese requirement before graduation for most of them, so plan to study Chinese. Our HSK guide explains the levels.
Two famous names are not in the table for a reason.
- Sun Yat-sen University is highly placed (the directory cites QS #276), but its clinical medicine programme is currently Chinese-medium, with an HSK 5 requirement at admission. It is not an English-taught MBBS. See Sun Yat-sen University.
- Peking University and Peking Union Medical College are not in our directory. A notice reported from the Indian Embassy in China said the Chinese Ministry of Education approved 45 universities to teach MBBS in English to foreign students, and that Peking University and Peking Union Medical College were not on that list. We could not find a current official list, so treat this as older guidance and check with the university.
Are the top-ranked universities more expensive?
Usually yes, but not always. The pattern in our directory is a clear premium for the two Shanghai universities with the highest global rankings, and a much smaller gap for the rest.
| Group | Universities | Annual fee from year 2 (per our directory) |
|---|---|---|
| Highest tier | Shanghai Jiao Tong, Fudan | US$11,750 to US$12,200 |
| Upper middle | Southern Medical, Capital Medical, Tianjin Medical, Tongji, China Medical | US$7,750 to US$8,400 |
| Middle | Zhejiang, Sichuan, Xi'an Jiaotong, Wuhan | US$7,100 to US$7,420 |
| Lowest in this table | Chongqing Medical | US$5,020 |
Chongqing Medical shows that a high position in a medical-only table does not need a high fee. At the other end, Beihua University and Dali University are listed at US$3,700 a year from year 2, but their rankings in our directory are not on the same lists. Compare like with like. For a full breakdown of year-1 and year-2 costs, read our total cost guide.
Fees can change every intake. Confirm the current fee with the university before you transfer money, and keep in mind that year 1 adds one-time charges such as a liaison fee, medical check-up and application fee.
Fudan, Shanghai Jiao Tong or something else?
Both are in Shanghai and both are expensive. The differences that matter for a Pakistani family are practical, not just rank.
- Fee: Fudan is US$11,750 a year from year 2 per our directory. Shanghai Jiao Tong is US$12,200.
- PMDC flag: Fudan is flagged PMDC in our directory. Shanghai Jiao Tong is not, so verify it carefully on pmdc.pk and search.wdoms.org before you apply.
- Deadline: Fudan's directory entry gives a deadline of about November to March. Shanghai Jiao Tong's gives about 30 June. Check both with the university.
- Hostel: Fudan's fee assumes a single-room hostel, and rooms are limited.
Tongji is also in Shanghai and costs less (US$7,970 a year from year 2 per our directory). If budget is a limit, compare it with Fudan before deciding.
Because the fee for a top-tier university is much higher, ask a harder question than "which is ranked higher": would the same money at a mid-tier recognised university, with a strong teaching hospital, give you the same registration outcome in Pakistan? For most students the answer depends on NRE preparation, not on the logo.
Can Pakistani students get into the top-ranked universities?
Yes, for the universities in the table, if you meet the entry rules. Eligibility is set by each university and by the PM&DC rules in force at the time. Read our MBBS in China eligibility guide for the usual academic requirements.
The top universities tend to be stricter in practice. Some ask for IELTS or TOEFL, some require a written test or interview, and some take the CSCA exam into account for scholarship routes. Our CSCA guide explains who needs it. Do not assume a university is easy or hard to enter from its ranking. Check its current admission page.
How to choose among the top medical universities in China
- Start with recognition. Check the university on pmdc.pk and search.wdoms.org, and confirm it is on the MOE list in our MOE-listed universities guide.
- Check the medium. Make sure the MBBS is English-taught, as Sun Yat-sen's is not.
- Set your budget using the year-2 total plus the one-time year-1 charges.
- Look at the teaching hospitals. The directory pages list affiliated hospitals and bed numbers. Clinical exposure matters more than a global rank for your NRE preparation.
- Compare cities. Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou cost more to live in than Chongqing, Luzhou or Urumqi.
- Read the university page and confirm the intake deadline.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the top medical university in China?
No single answer exists, because each ranking measures different things. On global lists for the whole university, Fudan, Shanghai Jiao Tong and Zhejiang appear highest among those in our directory. In medical-only tables, other names appear. Pick the list that matches your goal, check its year, and then check recognition for registration in Pakistan.
Which Chinese medical universities rank in the world top 300?
On THE's China page (World University Rankings 2027), Zhejiang, Fudan, Shanghai Jiao Tong, Wuhan, Huazhong, Xi'an Jiaotong, Sun Yat-sen and Sichuan are all placed inside the top 300. Positions change each year and differ between QS, THE and ARWU, so check the ranking owner's site for the edition you care about.
Is Fudan or Shanghai Jiao Tong better for MBBS?
Both rank highly, and neither is clearly better for every student. Per our directory, Fudan is about US$11,750 a year from year 2 and flagged PMDC. Shanghai Jiao Tong is about US$12,200 and not flagged PMDC. Verify recognition on pmdc.pk and search.wdoms.org, then compare deadlines and hospitals.
Do rankings matter for PMDC registration?
No. A high QS or THE position does not make a degree recognised. What counts is whether your institution is recognised for registration, listed in WDOMS where required, and whether you pass the NRE. Always read the current notices on pmdc.pk, because the rules have changed several times.
Are the top-ranked universities more expensive for MBBS?
Often, but not always. In our directory the two Shanghai names with the strongest global positions cost US$11,750 to US$12,200 a year from year 2. Chongqing Medical, placed 9th in the 2026 ShanghaiRanking medical table by its own account, is US$5,020. Confirm the current fee with the university.
Can Pakistani students get into Peking Union or Peking University for MBBS?
We could not confirm that either offers an English-taught MBBS to foreign students. A notice reported from the Indian Embassy said neither was among the 45 universities approved by the Ministry of Education for English MBBS. Neither is in our directory. Ask the university directly and do not pay anyone who promises a seat.
What does ESI top 1 percent mean?
ESI is a citation database from Clarivate. A subject is "ESI top 1%" when its citations place the institution among the top 1% worldwide in that field. It measures research impact, not teaching quality or clinical training, so use it as one signal and not as the deciding one.
Is a lower-ranked MOE-listed university a bad choice?
No. A MOE-listed, English-taught programme with strong hospitals and the right recognition can serve you as well as a famous one, at a much lower fee. Beihua, Dali and Nantong are examples in our directory. What you must avoid is an unrecognised university, whatever its price or rank.
The bottom line on the top medical universities in China
The top medical universities in China are best read as groups, not a strict top 10. Fudan, Shanghai Jiao Tong, Zhejiang, Xi'an Jiaotong, Sichuan, Wuhan and Tongji lead on whole-university lists. Capital Medical, Tianjin Medical, China Medical, Southern Medical and Chongqing Medical lead on medical-focused signals. Rank is one input. Recognition, fee, medium of instruction and clinical training decide whether the degree works for you. Check every university on pmdc.pk, search.wdoms.org and its own admissions page before you apply.
