MBBS in Guangzhou is offered in English at three MOE-listed universities in our directory: Guangzhou Medical University, Southern Medical University and Jinan University. Annual cost from year 2 runs from about US$6,320 to US$8,400 per our directory. Guangdong Pharmaceutical University is cheaper but is not MOE-listed, and Sun Yat-sen University teaches clinical medicine in Chinese, so it is not an English MBBS option.

Guangzhou has five universities in our directory, the most of any Chinese city. This guide compares them with fees, MOE status, entry rules and city life. Confirm every fee with the university before you pay anything.

Which universities offer MBBS in Guangzhou?

Here is the shortlist. Fees are the yearly recurring total from year 2 (tuition, hostel, visa extension and insurance) per our directory. Year 1 is higher because of one-time charges.

All five are listed as PMDC-approved in our directory. That is a directory flag, not a legal confirmation. Check each university on pmdc.pk and on search.wdoms.org before you commit. Our guide on how to verify PMDC-recognised universities in China shows the steps.

How much is MBBS in Guangzhou per year?

For the English MBBS universities, expect roughly RMB 45,600 to RMB 60,600 a year after the first year. The first year costs more. Our directory adds a medical checkup and a liaison or management charge of RMB 15,000 on top of the normal items.

UniversityTuition per yearHostel per yearYear 1 totalYear 2 onward
Jinan UniversityRMB 40,000RMB 4,000RMB 61,000RMB 45,600
Guangzhou Medical UniversityRMB 40,000RMB 6,000RMB 63,000RMB 47,600
Southern Medical UniversityRMB 50,000RMB 9,000 (double room)RMB 76,000RMB 60,600
Sun Yat-sen UniversityRMB 48,000Not includedRMB 65,000RMB 49,600
Guangdong Pharmaceutical UniversityBundledBundledRMB 33,000 (all-inclusive)RMB 24,600

Some details matter when you add this up:

  • The English MBBS programmes in our directory run six years: five years of study and one internship year. The yearly fee in our directory stays the same in the internship year.
  • Southern Medical University lists a triple-room hostel at RMB 5,000, which lowers its year 1 total to RMB 72,000.
  • Sun Yat-sen University does not include housing. Our directory puts off-campus rent at RMB 1,500 to 3,000 a month in Guangzhou.
  • Food is separate at every university. Our directory gives roughly RMB 1,000 to 1,800 a month, depending on the university page.
  • Each university also charges an application fee: RMB 1,500 for four of them and RMB 2,000 for Guangdong Pharmaceutical University, per our directory.

Fees change. Treat these figures as a planning range and confirm the current fee with the university. For the full picture including flights and pocket money, read MBBS in China total cost for Pakistani students.

Which Guangzhou university is cheapest for MBBS?

Guangdong Pharmaceutical University has the lowest fee, at RMB 24,600 a year from year 2 per our directory. It is not MOE-listed in our directory. Our research also found no official page confirming an English MBBS there; the English listings we found came from agencies. So the low fee comes with a bigger checking job.

Among MOE-listed options, Jinan University is the cheapest at RMB 45,600 a year, followed by Guangzhou Medical University at RMB 47,600. The gap between them is only RMB 2,000 a year, so choose on entry rules and teaching hospitals, not on that difference.

The MOE-listed flag matters because the MOE list is the usual starting point for English-taught MBBS for international students. Our MOE-listed universities in China list explains it in full.

Guangzhou Medical University MBBS

Guangzhou Medical University was founded in 1958. Our directory lists it as MOE-listed, with QS 651-700 (2024) and Double First Class status in clinical medicine. It is known for respiratory medicine, and its first affiliated hospital houses the respiratory institute where Professor Zhong Nanshan works.

  • Programme: six years, fully in English, September intake.
  • Hospitals: seven directly affiliated hospitals and more than 25,000 beds per our directory.
  • Entry rules in our directory: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 85 or Duolingo 115, an online interview, a self-introduction video of 3 to 5 minutes, a study plan of 500 words or more, and CSCA with Chemistry and Mathematics.
  • Chinese language: HSK 3 is needed before the year 6 internship only.

This is the most demanding application of the three English options. Start the English test early. See our CSCA exam guide for the test itself.

Southern Medical University MBBS fees

Southern Medical University began as a military medical university in 1951 and became SMU in 2004, per our directory. It lists a Times Higher Education top 300 placement. A Guangdong news report on the October 2026 THE results also places it in the 251-300 band, shared with South China University of Technology (newsgd.com report). Rankings measure research, not the quality of MBBS teaching, so use them as one signal only.

  • Programme: six years, English medium, September intake.
  • Fee: RMB 60,600 a year from year 2, the highest of the Guangzhou English options.
  • Deadline: our directory says about 30 June each year. Confirm the date with the university.
  • Clinical network: eight affiliated hospitals and about 22,000 beds per our directory.

The directory notes that the internship year has a home-country eligibility question. Ask SMU in writing how its internship year is treated before you apply. Then check what the PMDC registration process after a foreign MBBS expects.

Jinan University MBBS for Pakistani students

Jinan University was founded in 1906 and, per our directory, was the first Chinese university to recruit foreign students. It is MOE-listed in our directory with Double First Class and 211 Project status. It lists QS 540 overall and QS Medicine 201-250.

  • Programme: six years in English, September intake.
  • Application windows in our directory: 15 January to 28 February and 1 April to 31 May.
  • Seats: about 30 MBBS places a year per our directory, so it is competitive.
  • Fee: RMB 45,600 a year from year 2, the lowest among MOE-listed Guangzhou options.

Jinan University publishes admission brochures for foreign students on its own site (Jinan University 2026 brochure). That brochure did not give MBBS details in the part we read, so we rely on our directory for the MBBS rules. Ask the university for its current MBBS notice.

Does Sun Yat-sen University teach MBBS in English?

No, not in our directory. Sun Yat-sen University lists clinical medicine as a five-year Chinese-medium programme that is not an English MBBS. It asks for HSK Level 5 with a score of at least 180 at admission. Our directory shows two application rounds: 1 January to 28 February and 1 March to 30 April.

SYSU's own 2026 bachelor guide confirms the HSK 5 score of 180 for Chinese-taught applicants and lists Medical Science tuition at RMB 48,000 a year (SYSU 2026 bachelor guide). The page did not say whether clinical medicine is taught in English. An older 2020 guide listed a separate English-taught clinical medicine track with a high English score, so check the current catalogue.

For most Pakistani families, SYSU only makes sense if the student can study medicine in Chinese. Read whether you need Chinese for MBBS in China and the HSK guide before considering it.

Guangdong Pharmaceutical University MBBS

Guangdong Pharmaceutical University was founded in 1958 and is described in our directory as one of three pharmaceutical universities in China. Our directory lists an English-medium MBBS with a Chinese language foundation in year 1, HSK 3 only, and an all-inclusive year 1 package of RMB 33,000.

It is not MOE-listed in our directory. A China Daily profile we found describes it as a pharmacy-focused university with international students, but we found no official MBBS page. Before paying anything, ask for the written MBBS approval for international students and check the university on pmdc.pk and search.wdoms.org. A low fee is a reason to check harder, not a reason to relax.

Is Guangzhou good for Pakistani students?

For most students, yes, on practical grounds. Guangzhou is a large city, the capital of Guangdong, and our directory puts the metro area above 18 million people. Baiyun International Airport has links to South Asia, and Hong Kong is reachable by high-speed rail in about an hour.

The climate is warm. Third-party climate sites give an average of about 22 degrees Celsius a year, with a rainy season from April to September. Our directory lists summer highs of 30 to 35 degrees Celsius and winter temperatures of 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. Students from Punjab and Sindh will find winters mild compared with northern China.

The trade-off is cost. Guangzhou is a first-tier city, so rent and eating out cost more than in smaller medical cities. Our directory lists Guangdong Pharmaceutical University living costs at RMB 1,500 to 2,000 a month. Check the guide to hostel and halal food in China for the wider picture.

Is halal food easy to find in Guangzhou?

Usually yes. Travel guides describe a cluster of halal restaurants around the Huaisheng Mosque area, with dishes such as hand-pulled noodles and lamb skewers. Look for the sign ๆธ…็œŸ (qingzhen). Our directory also says halal food is widely available in the city, but the on-campus canteen offer varies.

Ask each university's international office whether its canteens have a halal counter. The travel guides we found are not official, so treat opening hours and addresses as something to check on arrival.

Is Guangzhou expensive compared with other Chinese cities?

It is more expensive than smaller cities in our directory, but tuition is what drives the gap. The cheapest MOE-listed and PMDC-flagged universities elsewhere in China come in at roughly US$3,700 to US$5,100 a year per our directory, below the Guangzhou range of US$6,320 to US$8,400. Over six years that adds up. Weigh it against the hospital training and the city.

If budget is the main limit, compare the cheaper MOE-listed options first. Our complete guide to MBBS in China and the China university directory let you filter by fee and MOE status.

What do Pakistani students need before applying?

  1. Check eligibility. Our MBBS in China eligibility guide covers marks and documents.
  2. Know the MDCAT position. Since PM&DC public notice No. Exam-59/2026/350 (5 October 2026), MDCAT is not required for admission to foreign medical institutions. See the PM&DC notice explained. MDCAT is still needed for colleges inside Pakistan.
  3. Plan the English test and CSCA early, since Guangzhou Medical University lists both.
  4. Remember what comes after graduation: the NEB assessment to transfer into a Pakistani institution, the NRE to practise in Pakistan, and graduating from a PM&DC-recognised institution.
  5. Confirm other May 2026 conditions, such as FSc marks and registration, on pmdc.pk because they are unconfirmed after the notice.
