Is Chinese MBBS valid in Pakistan? It can be, but not automatically. PM&DC does not accept or reject a country. It looks at the exact university, and a graduate then has to complete the registration steps before practising: usually the National Registration Examination (NRE), provisional registration, and a house job. A degree from a university that is not on the recognised lists can leave you unable to register at all.
So the honest answer for parents is: check the university, not the country. This guide explains what PM&DC actually checks, what the steps after graduation look like, what the NRE numbers say, and what nobody can promise about jobs. Rules in this area have changed several times, so every point below should be confirmed on pmdc.pk before you pay a fee.
Short answers for worried parents
- PM&DC recognises institutions, not countries. Some Chinese medical universities are recognised and some are not.
- Recognition rests on PM&DC lists and on the university's WDOMS and ECFMG status. A university being on China's Ministry of Education (MOE) list is a separate thing.
- Every foreign graduate who wants to practise in Pakistan goes through PM&DC registration. For most graduates that includes the NRE.
- Since the PM&DC notice of 5 October 2026, MDCAT is not required to take admission abroad. It does not change what happens after graduation.
- No MBBS gives a guaranteed job, in China or in Pakistan.
Does PMDC accept a Chinese MBBS degree?
PM&DC works from lists of recognised foreign institutions. A report by ProPakistani describes the council's position as follows: only graduates of PM&DC-recognised foreign institutions, and those on the ECFMG-accredited list, are eligible for provisional registration and for the NRE. A PM&DC public notice (Letter 1220) repeats that Pakistani nationals must hold their primary medical qualification from an ECFMG-recognised foreign institution to sit the NRE, and says no exemptions will be entertained. You can read it on the PM&DC website.
That notice was written about Afghan medical schools, but the principle applies to every country. The test is the institution. China has many medical universities, and the same country can have one that passes and one that does not.
What decides whether a Chinese university counts?
Three checks matter, and they are separate:
- Is the university on the current PM&DC list of recognised foreign institutions?
- Is it listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) with an ECFMG sponsor note? ECFMG has also required medical schools to be accredited by an agency recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) for applicants since 2024.
- Is the programme itself MBBS taught in English and approved by the Chinese authorities? In our directory this is the MOE-listed flag. See the MOE-listed universities guide.
Passing one check does not replace the others. A university can be MOE-listed and still need a separate check on PM&DC and WDOMS. Our own directory shows a PMDC flag for each university, written as "listed as PMDC-approved in our directory". Treat that as a starting point. The source of truth is pmdc.pk and search.wdoms.org. Our step-by-step method is in how to verify PMDC-recognised universities in China, and the ECFMG side is covered in WDOMS and ECFMG-listed Chinese medical universities.
Why do you hear that PMDC rejects Chinese degrees?
Because some reports said exactly that. In 2025 and 2026 there were news stories about degrees from colleges in several regions being rejected, about hospitals being told not to give house jobs to graduates of unrecognised institutions, and about the registration exam being paused and then restarted. Some of those reports were later contradicted or clarified by PM&DC itself. Social media then flattened all of it into "China is not accepted".
The accurate reading is narrower. Graduates of institutions that fail the recognition checks have a problem. Graduates of institutions that pass them follow the registration route. If someone gives you a blanket statement in either direction, whether "all of China is fine" or "none of China is valid", they are not describing how PM&DC works.
What happens after a Chinese MBBS: the registration steps
This is the sequence most Pakistani graduates describe. Check each step against the latest PM&DC notices, because details have shifted.
- Finish the full MBBS programme, including the clinical years and internship that your Chinese university requires. Chinese MBBS programmes are normally five years of study plus a clinical internship, but confirm the exact length with your university.
- Collect your degree, transcript and internship completion certificate. Your documents will be checked and verified.
- Meet the PM&DC eligibility conditions for foreign graduates, including that your university is recognised.
- Sit the NRE. This is the registration exam for foreign graduates who want to practise in Pakistan.
- Apply for provisional registration.
- Complete a house job (internship) in Pakistan. The 2023 PM&DC registration regulations, as quoted in press coverage, require a one-year house job after provisional registration for foreign graduates who qualify through the NRE.
- Apply for full registration.
Two points need attention. First, a PM&DC letter dated 18 December 2025, on mandatory provisional registration, says a foreign graduate cannot start a house job, internship, clinical training or observership in Pakistan without provisional registration. The same regulations say house-job time done before provisional registration does not count towards full registration. So do not accept a "quick house job" offer before you are registered.
Second, the exact route can differ depending on whether your university is recognised. Reports describe one track for graduates of recognised institutions and a different one, through the NRE, for others. We have not found a single official page that states the full current rule in one place. Ask PM&DC, or read our overview of PMDC registration after a foreign MBBS.
Is the NRE hard for Chinese MBBS graduates?
The NRE is a real filter, and parents should see the numbers. These figures come from press reports of PM&DC results, not from a PM&DC table we could open, so treat them as press-reported and check the official results.
| NRE session | Candidates | Passed | Pass rate | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| December 2025, all countries | 7,076 | 1,473 | about 20.8% | Press report in The News |
| December 2025, China | 2,154 | 333 | about 15.5% | Same report |
| June 2025, medical graduates, all countries | 5,035 registered | 1,252 | 25.26% | Press reports |
The same report said eight countries, including Georgia, had no passes at all in that session. Different outlets give slightly different overall percentages (for example 20.8% overall against 21.17% for medical graduates only), which is normal when dental candidates are counted separately.
What do these numbers mean? Most candidates failed, in every country. A pass rate of about 15.5% for China is lower than the all-country average, but the figures do not tell you why. They do not separate recognised from unrecognised universities, first attempts from repeat attempts, or strong students from weak ones. We would not use them to say "China is bad" or "China is fine". We would use them to make one point: the NRE needs serious preparation, and a degree alone does not carry you through. We cover this in detail in NRE pass rate for China MBBS graduates.
How the 5 October 2026 MDCAT notice fits in
PM&DC public notice No. Exam-59/2026/350, dated 5 October 2026, says Pakistani students do not need to pass MDCAT to seek admission to foreign medical institutions. Our full explanation is in MDCAT not required for MBBS abroad: PM&DC notice 2026.
This is a statement about getting into a university abroad. It is not a statement that the degree will be recognised afterwards. MDCAT is still the entry test for medical colleges inside Pakistan. The NEB assessment is still needed to transfer into a Pakistani institution. The registration exam (NRE) is still needed to practise in Pakistan, and your university still has to be a PM&DC-recognised institution.
The May 2026 conditions, such as the FSc percentage and registration on srf.pmdc.pk, were not clearly confirmed or removed by the October notice. Check pmdc.pk for the current text before you apply.
Do Chinese MBBS graduates get jobs in Pakistan?
Nobody can promise it, and you should walk away from anyone who does. This is also true for Pakistani medical college graduates, so it is not a China-only problem.
What we can say from reports:
- Foreign graduates have complained of difficulty finding house jobs. Reports from 2024 and 2025 mention no structured placement system and a preference for local graduates in government hospitals.
- A Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly notice stated that government hospitals generally keep house-job seats for their own medical college students. We have not checked whether that is the policy everywhere.
- Hospitals have been told that foreign graduates need provisional registration before starting a house job.
- Pakistan's wider graduate unemployment is high, according to a PIDE analysis.
In our experience, families get hurt most when they are told the job question is "taken care of". Ask every university and every agent the same plain question: who arranges the house job, and what happens if a seat is not available? If the answer is vague, treat it as a risk and not as reassurance. We discuss the wider decision in is MBBS in China worth it for Pakistani students.
Can you work abroad with a Chinese MBBS?
Often yes, but each country has its own rules and none is automatic. The US route runs through ECFMG, which requires your school to be in WDOMS with an ECFMG sponsor note and, from 2024, to be accredited by a WFME-recognised agency. The UK uses the PLAB exam through the GMC, and the GMC keeps a list of recognised international medical schools. Other countries have their own exams and lists.
The practical point is the same as for Pakistan. A university that is properly listed gives you more options than one that is not. Check the ECFMG and WDOMS status of the exact university you are considering, and check the receiving country's regulator for the current rule.
How to check a Chinese university before you pay
- Write down the full official name of the university. Names are copied by agents and sometimes confused.
- Search for it on pmdc.pk and read the latest notices on recognised institutions.
- Search for it on WDOMS and open the sponsor notes tab.
- Check that the MBBS programme is English-medium and that the university appears on China's official lists. See the eligibility guide.
- Ask the university in writing how long the programme is, what the clinical training involves, and which hospitals you will train in.
- Get the fee in writing and compare it with the total cost guide.
- Confirm the visa route. Study of more than 180 days needs an X1 visa, with the JW202 form. See X1 visa and JW202 explained.
- Prepare your documents early. Some universities ask for attested documents, so confirm requirements in writing. See documents required for MBBS in China.
Red flags that point to a scam
- A promise that PM&DC recognition is "guaranteed" without showing you the university's listing.
- A request for money to apply for a government scholarship.
- A university you cannot find on any official list.
- Pressure to pay a deposit today.
More detail is in is MBBS in China a scam: risks and myths. Titans Abroad only recommends universities that are listed as PMDC-approved in our directory (and MOE-listed for China), and it does not charge a consultation fee. You can still ask us to look at a specific university through the application form, and you should confirm the answer yourself on pmdc.pk.
You can also browse the MBBS in China directory and filter by MOE-listed status.
Frequently asked questions
Is MBBS from China valid in Pakistan?
It can be valid if the university is recognised by PM&DC and you complete the registration steps for foreign graduates, which normally include the NRE. Validity depends on the exact university, not on China as a country. Check pmdc.pk and WDOMS for the university before you pay any fee.
Does PMDC accept all Chinese medical universities?
No. PM&DC works from lists of recognised foreign institutions, and press reports say many Chinese medical universities are on the list but not all. Some are not recognised. Always verify the specific university name on pmdc.pk and search.wdoms.org, even if an agent or a directory says it is approved.
Do Chinese MBBS graduates get jobs in Pakistan?
Some do and some struggle, and no one can guarantee a post. Reports describe difficulty getting house jobs, and government hospitals often favour their own graduates. The same uncertainty exists after a Pakistani MBBS. Ask your university and any agent who arranges the house job before you commit.
Do I need to pass the NRE after a China MBBS?
For most foreign graduates who want to practise in Pakistan, yes. The NRE is the registration exam for foreign graduates. Rules for graduates of recognised institutions have been reported differently, so confirm your exact route with PM&DC. Press reports show that pass rates are low, so plan to prepare seriously.
Can I do house job in Pakistan after a China MBBS?
Yes, but only after provisional registration. A PM&DC letter of 18 December 2025 says a foreign graduate cannot start a house job without it, and house-job time done earlier does not count towards full registration. Seats are limited, so ask about placement early.
Can I work abroad with a Chinese MBBS degree?
Often yes, through each country's licensing route, such as ECFMG and USMLE for the United States or PLAB for the United Kingdom. Eligibility depends on your school's WDOMS listing, ECFMG status and accreditation. Check the regulator of the country where you want to work for the current rule.
Is MDCAT needed for a Chinese MBBS?
No, not for admission abroad. PM&DC notice Exam-59/2026/350 of 5 October 2026 removed that requirement for foreign admissions. MDCAT still applies to colleges inside Pakistan, and the NRE still applies to practise in Pakistan after graduating. Confirm any other conditions on pmdc.pk.
Final word: is Chinese MBBS valid in Pakistan?
Chinese MBBS is valid in Pakistan when it comes from a recognised university and the graduate completes PM&DC registration. It is not valid by default, and it is not rejected by default. The risk sits in choosing the wrong university, skipping the checks, and trusting promises about jobs.
Before you pay anyone, verify the university on pmdc.pk and WDOMS, get fees and conditions in writing, and plan for the NRE from the first year. If you want a second pair of eyes on a shortlist, use the application form.
