The best universities for MBBS in China depend on what you need most. For the strongest name and research, our directory points to Fudan, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Xi'an Jiaotong and Wuhan. For a middle fee, Chongqing Medical, Jilin and Shandong are sensible. For the lowest fee, Beihua, Dali and Nantong. All of these are listed as MOE-listed and as PMDC-approved in our directory, and you should confirm both yourself.
This guide is for Pakistani students and parents who ask "which university is best for MBBS in China?" We do not rank universities ourselves. We group fifteen options by what a family usually cares about, show the fee from our directory, and tell you how to check each one before you pay.
The shortlist at a glance
We started from the Titans Abroad MBBS in China university directory. Of the 95 Chinese universities in it, 45 are marked MOE-listed. Of those, 43 carry a PMDC flag. We picked fifteen from those 43. The fee is the annual recurring total from year 2 (tuition, hostel, visa extension and insurance), per our directory. Year 1 is higher because of one-time charges. Please confirm the current fee with the university.

What should "best" mean for a Pakistani family?
Search results often give you a top ten. That helps less than it seems, because the lists use different rules. QS ranks whole universities worldwide. The ShanghaiRanking Best Chinese Universities list has a separate medical category. Chinese titles such as 985, 211 and Double First-Class are government programmes, not league tables. A university can be strong on one and missing from another.
For a Pakistani family we suggest five checks, in this order:
- Recognition. The university should be on the Chinese MOE list for English-taught MBBS and accepted for registration in Pakistan.
- Total fee over six years, not the headline tuition.
- Clinical training. Where are the hospitals, and how much of the clinical teaching is in English?
- Language. HSK requirements and how much Chinese you need in later years.
- Daily life. Climate, halal food, distance from Pakistan, and safety for the student.
Ranking comes after these. A famous name does not help if you cannot afford year four.
Which universities are strongest on research and brand?
These are the names that usually come first in a ranking search. All have higher fees than the rest of the shortlist.
Fudan University in Shanghai is the highest-cost university on our shortlist at 11,750 USD a year from year 2 in our directory. The directory lists it as QS Top 40 Globally, a C9 League member and top three for medicine in China. QS 2026, released in June 2025, placed Fudan 30th in the world according to QS tables. It asks for IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90, CSCA Mathematics and an online interview, so check the entry rules early.
Zhejiang University teaches its international MBBS at the Yiwu campus, about 100 km from Hangzhou, not in the main city. The directory lists it as C9 League and Double First Class, at 7,420 USD. It asks for HSK-4 (190+) and a speaking test before the Year 6 clerkship.
Sichuan University in Chengdu is listed with ARWU #87 Globally and with West China Hospital as the #1 hospital in China, at 7,400 USD. Xi'an Jiaotong University lists C9 League status and says it was the first university to teach MBBS in English in China, at 7,100 USD. Wuhan University also costs 7,100 USD and lists QS Top 300 Globally. Huazhong University of Science and Technology costs 6,470 USD, but its directory entry says teaching moves toward Chinese in later years and lists HSK-5 before the internship.
These rankings are directory entries and some are older than the latest editions. Check the current QS, ShanghaiRanking or ministry pages if the ranking matters to you.
Which universities balance fee and recognition?
If you want a recognised name without the highest fee, this middle band is where many families land.
- Chongqing Medical University costs 5,020 USD. The directory lists QS 561 (2024) and sixth among Chinese medical universities. The university itself reports ninth in the medical category of the ShanghaiRanking 2026 Best Chinese Universities list, released on 15 April 2026. The two rankings use different methods, so treat them as separate signals.
- Jilin University in Changchun costs 5,640 USD and is listed as Double First Class, 985 and 211.
- Shandong University in Jinan costs 6,050 USD and is listed as 985 and Double First Class Class A. Its directory entry says no IELTS is required.
Compare the fee table, not the headline. Our guide to MBBS in China total cost for Pakistani students shows what to add for year 1, flights, food and the internship year.
Which are the best low-fee MBBS universities in China?
If budget decides, look at Beihua University and Dali University, both at 3,700 USD a year from year 2 in our directory. Nantong University is next at 4,670 USD and sits about 120 km from Shanghai. Xinjiang Medical University and Ningxia Medical University are also in the lower band in the directory.
A low fee is not a lower standard of recognition, because all of these are MOE-listed in our directory. The trade-offs are usually the city, the climate and the choice of hospitals. Dali, for example, lists English teaching with bilingual support and requires HSK-4 by the end of Year 1. Visit the university pages and read the details before deciding.
Which are the best picks if you want a big city?
Big-city life means better flights, more food choices and bigger hospitals, but a higher fee. In our directory:
- Shanghai: Fudan (11,750 USD) and Tongji University (7,970 USD, listed with QS #177 and THE #141).
- Beijing: Capital Medical University at 8,200 USD.
- Guangzhou: Jinan University at 6,320 USD, with Guangzhou Medical University and Southern Medical University also in the directory.
- Wuhan: Wuhan University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
Our guide on hostel and halal food in China covers what daily life looks like.
How do you check that a university is really recognised?
Recognition has three layers and you should check each one yourself.
- China. The Ministry of Education list of English-taught MBBS universities. The list that most guides cite names 45 universities. An Indian embassy notice says that schools not on it can recruit foreign medicine students only in Chinese. The list is reviewed from time to time, so ask the university for its current status. See the embassy notice and our page on MOE-listed universities in China.
- Pakistan. Check the PM&DC site, pmdc.pk, for its notices. PM&DC said on 31 July 2026 that only graduates of institutions recognised by ECFMG can sit the National Registration Examination. Our guide on how to verify PMDC-recognised universities in China walks through it.
- World Directory. Search the school in the World Directory of Medical Schools and read the Sponsor Notes tab. ECFMG eligibility depends on that note, and from 2024 also on accreditation by a WFME-recognised agency, according to ECFMG.
The last step matters because the NRE is hard. News reports on the December 2025 NRE Step-I put the China-trained pass rate at about 15.5 percent (333 of 2,154), against about 21 percent overall. Those are press figures, not a PM&DC table, but they show that the university's teaching quality matters as much as its name.
What about MDCAT and CSCA?
Since PM&DC public notice No. Exam-59/2026/350 dated 5 October 2026, MDCAT is not required for Pakistani students seeking admission to foreign medical institutions. You still need MDCAT for colleges inside Pakistan, the NEB assessment to transfer into a Pakistani institution, and the NRE to practise in Pakistan. Other conditions from earlier in 2026, such as FSc marks, are unconfirmed, so check pmdc.pk. Read our page on the PM&DC notice removing the MDCAT requirement.
Some Chinese universities ask for CSCA, a Chinese admission test, and some ask for IELTS or TOEFL. Our eligibility guide, the CSCA guide and the HSK guide explain each requirement. Also read whether you need Chinese for MBBS in China.
A simple way to choose
- Write your total six-year budget, including year 1 and flights.
- Remove universities above it.
- Check the entry rules (IELTS, CSCA, interview, age) against your documents.
- Ask each remaining university for its current fee sheet.
- Verify MOE, PM&DC and WDOMS status for your top two.
- Pick the city you can live in for six years.
Titans Abroad does not charge a consultation fee, and we only suggest universities that are PM&DC-listed and MOE-listed. You can apply through our form if you want help shortlisting. Our other guide, is MBBS in China worth it, covers the bigger question of whether China is right for you.
Final advice on the best universities for MBBS in China
The best universities for MBBS in China are the ones you can afford for six years, that are recognised in China and Pakistan, and that teach in a language you can follow. Frequently asked questions
Which is the best university for MBBS in China for Pakistani students?
There is no single best. For the strongest brand and research, families usually look at Fudan, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Xi'an Jiaotong and Wuhan. For a balance of recognition and fee, Chongqing Medical University and Jilin University are common choices. For the lowest fee, look at Beihua, Dali and Nantong. Match the choice to your budget, marks and city preference.
Which Chinese medical university has the best hospitals for clinical training?
Our directory lists West China Hospital (Sichuan University) as the number one hospital in China, and large hospital networks at Wuhan University, Zhejiang University and Fudan. Hospital size matters less than whether you can study there in English during clinical years. Ask the university how many clinical hours are taught in English and how much Chinese you will need.
Is a top-ranked Chinese university worth a higher fee for MBBS?
Sometimes. A higher-ranked university may give a stronger name, research access and hospitals, but you pay for it every year. For a six-year course, a gap of around 3,000 to 4,000 USD a year becomes a large total. Your registration outcome depends on the degree being accepted in Pakistan and on passing the NRE, not on the ranking alone.
Which universities are best for MBBS in China on a limited budget?
In our directory, the lowest annual costs among MOE-listed universities are Beihua University and Dali University at 3,700 USD, then Nantong University at 4,670 USD, from year 2. Year 1 costs more because of one-time charges. Check the full fee table and confirm the current fee with the university before you decide.
Do I need to pick an MOE-listed university?
For English-taught MBBS, yes, you should. The Chinese Ministry of Education published a list of about 45 universities allowed to teach MBBS to international students in English, and Indian embassy notices say others may teach foreign medical students only in Chinese. Our directory marks MOE status, but check the current list with the university and the ministry.
Are Chinese universities for MBBS better in big cities or smaller cities?
Neither is better by default. Big cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou offer more flights, food options and hospitals, but cost more. Smaller cities cost less and are quieter, though you may have fewer halal options and more Chinese in daily life. Choose a city you can afford and live in comfortably for six years.
How do I check that my chosen university is accepted by PMDC?
Do not rely only on a consultant or a directory, including ours. Check the PM&DC website at pmdc.pk for its notices and recognition position. Then search the university in the World Directory of Medical Schools at search.wdoms.org and look at the Sponsor Notes tab for ECFMG. Ask the university to confirm in writing. Our directory flags are a starting point only.
Do I still need MDCAT to apply to these universities?
No, not for admission to a foreign medical institution. A PM&DC public notice dated 5 October 2026 removed that requirement. You still need MDCAT for colleges inside Pakistan, and you still need to pass the NRE to practise in Pakistan. Confirm other conditions such as FSc marks on pmdc.pk.
