The cheapest MOE-listed MBBS universities in China, by annual cost in our directory, are Beihua University and Dali University at about US$3,700 a year, followed by Nantong University (US$4,670) and Xinjiang Medical University (US$4,979). All ten universities below are MOE-listed and listed as PMDC-approved in our directory, and the tenth costs about US$5,125 a year. These are annual figures from Year 2, after the larger first-year charges. Confirm the current fee with each university before you pay anything.

This post ranks the ten lowest, explains what the tuition number leaves out, and says where cheap is fine and where it needs a second look. For the full budget, including flights and living costs, read our MBBS in China total cost guide.

Which are the cheapest MOE-listed MBBS universities in China?

We took every MOE-listed China university in our directory that is also flagged as PMDC-approved there, sorted them by annual cost, and kept the lowest ten. The annual cost in our directory is tuition plus hostel, visa extension and insurance, counted from Year 2. Year 1 is higher because of one-time charges. Tuition and hostel columns come from each university's fee table in our directory.

All ten offer the 6-year MBBS (five years of study and a one-year internship) in English, per our directory. Dollar figures are the directory's own conversion. Two small mismatches are worth knowing. For Beihua, the headline figure is RMB 26,600, while its fee table adds up to RMB 28,200 from Year 2. For China Three Gorges, the headline is RMB 36,900 and the fee table adds up to RMB 36,600. Both differences are small, but they are a good reason to ask each university for a written fee sheet.

Is MBBS in China under 5,000 USD a year possible?

Yes, but only at four universities in this list: Beihua, Dali, Nantong and Xinjiang Medical University, whose directory figure is US$4,979. That figure is for Year 2 onwards. In Year 1, the fee tables in our directory add roughly RMB 15,000 to 17,000 in one-time charges (a liaison and management fee, a medical check-up and others). So even at the cheapest university, Year 1 comes to about RMB 42,000 to 44,000.

The first-year totals in our directory are:

  • Dali University: RMB 42,200
  • Beihua University: RMB 43,600
  • Nantong University: RMB 49,000
  • The other seven: roughly RMB 51,500 to 52,200

If a consultant tells you "the whole degree costs under 5,000 USD a year", ask for the Year 1 figure in writing.

What does the tuition number leave out?

Tuition is the largest cost, but it is not the whole bill. The fee tables in our directory also include:

  • Hostel, from about RMB 2,200 (Dali, double room) to RMB 6,000 (Nantong) a year.
  • Visa extension and insurance, about RMB 1,600 a year at most of these universities.
  • One-time Year 1 charges: medical check-up and a liaison and management fee of RMB 15,000 at most of the ten.
  • An application fee, paid separately before you apply.

The fee tables do not include flights, food, local transport, winter clothing, books or the Chinese-language study that helps you in hospital wards. Food costs differ a lot by city. Beihua's directory page puts food in Jilin at around RMB 700 to 900 a month, which is low, but we have no matching official figure for the other nine, so ask current students.

Our self-funded MBBS abroad cost comparison shows how China compares with Russia, Georgia and Azerbaijan once all of this is added up.

What are the honest notes on each university?

Beihua University and Dali University

These two sit at the bottom of the price list. At Beihua, tuition is RMB 21,000 and the directory describes a six-year total of about RMB 184,600. Dali's fee table works out lower over six years, at about RMB 176,200, because its hostel is cheaper (RMB 2,200 against RMB 5,600). So "Beihua is cheapest" depends on whether you count tuition alone or the whole bill. Beihua is in Jilin, where winter temperatures can fall to between -15 and -25 degrees Celsius, according to its directory page. Dali is in Yunnan and its page notes HSK 4 by the end of Year 1.

I could not find an official, university-published MBBS fee for either one in our research. The figures here come from our directory, and the few outside sources I found disagreed or were agency pages. Treat both as "confirm with the university".

Nantong University

Nantong is the only university in the cheapest four whose directory page lists an English test (IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80). It also notes that tuition "varies across sources" and should be verified with the university. Several outside sources I found showed about RMB 26,000, which matches our directory, but none was the university's own fee schedule. The attraction is the location, about 120 km from Shanghai by high-speed rail.

Xinjiang, Chongqing and Ningxia

Xinjiang Medical University and Chongqing Medical University are dedicated medical universities with fees around RMB 30,000 a year. Ningxia's tuition is RMB 29,800, with the internship year at half tuition (RMB 14,900) and a second intake in March, according to its directory page. Check the cost of flights and domestic connections to Urumqi and Yinchuan before you commit.

Shihezi, Southwest Medical, Anhui Medical and China Three Gorges

These four cost almost the same, between US$5,050 and US$5,125 a year. At Shihezi, the Chinese-medium Clinical Medicine track costs less, but it is not the English MBBS and it is not what this list compares. At Southwest Medical, the directory lists a one-time freshman scholarship of RMB 6,000 and yearly excellence awards of RMB 10,000 to 15,000. At Anhui Medical, the directory notes the First Affiliated Hospital's repeated place in China's top 100. At China Three Gorges, the directory lists seven Grade 3A affiliated hospitals.

Is the cheapest MBBS university in China good enough for PMDC registration?

A low fee does not by itself make a university poor or unsafe, and a high fee does not make it safe. What matters is the list of rules that apply to you. All ten universities here are listed as PMDC-approved in our directory and are MOE-listed. Directory flags are a starting point, not proof. Check each university on pmdc.pk and in the World Directory of Medical Schools at search.wdoms.org before you pay a deposit. Our guide to verifying PMDC-recognised universities in China walks through the steps.

Two points matter more than the price:

  • PM&DC's notice allows only Pakistanis who graduate from institutions recognised by ECFMG to sit the National Registration Examination, according to a July 2026 report I found. ECFMG says that from 2024 applicants must attend a school accredited by an agency recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education. Read the ECFMG guidance on medical school selection and check your shortlist.
  • A WDOMS listing shows a school is registered. It is not an accreditation or a promise of recognition in Pakistan.

Passing the registration exam depends on you and your training as much as on the university. Compare two universities by their teaching hospitals, how many hours you spend in clinical wards and how recent graduates have done, by more than fees.

Do you need MDCAT for these universities?

No. Since PM&DC public notice No. Exam-59/2026/350 (5 October 2026), MDCAT is not required for Pakistani students seeking admission to foreign medical institutions. MDCAT is still required for medical colleges inside Pakistan, and the NEB assessment applies if you later want to transfer into a Pakistani institution. To practise in Pakistan you still need to pass the registration exam (NRE) and graduate from a PM&DC-recognised institution. Other conditions announced in May 2026, such as an FSc percentage and registration at srf.pmdc.pk, are unconfirmed after the notice, so check pmdc.pk. Our post on the PM&DC notice on MDCAT has the details, and our eligibility guide covers marks and age.

Can a scholarship reduce the fee further?

Sometimes. Our directory lists these university and regional awards among the ten:

  • Southwest Medical University: RMB 6,000 one-time freshman scholarship and RMB 10,000 to 15,000 a year for strong results.
  • Ningxia Medical University: RMB 15,000 one-time freshmen award for the top 30% of new MBBS students, decided by a test after arrival.
  • Xinjiang Medical University: a regional government scholarship of RMB 5,000 to 30,000 a year for students from neighbouring countries including Pakistan.
  • Dali University: RMB 3,000 to 10,000 a year for outstanding students.
  • Nantong University: a Jiangsu provincial award of up to RMB 30,000, which is competitive.

These are merit-based and amounts change, so do not count on one when you plan your budget. Full Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) support for MBBS is a separate matter, and sources I found disagree on whether it covers MBBS at all. Check campuschina.org. For other options, read our guide to fully funded MBBS scholarships. Titans Abroad does not charge a consultation fee, and if anyone asks you to pay for a government scholarship application, treat that as a warning sign. You can start an application here when you are ready.

How should you choose between these universities?

  1. Start with your real budget for six years, including Year 1, flights and living costs.
  2. Remove any university you cannot confirm on pmdc.pk and search.wdoms.org.
  3. Look at climate and location. Jilin, Urumqi and Yinchuan have cold, dry winters, and Yunnan is milder.
  4. Ask for a written fee sheet and the admission requirements, including any English test.
  5. Compare with the wider list of MOE-listed universities in China and the MBBS in China directory, since the next tier up may offer a bigger city or a stronger hospital for a small price difference.

Visa rules also matter. Students studying more than 180 days normally apply for an X1 visa with the university's JW202 form and admission notice. Financial proof requirements and passport validity differ between official pages, so ask the visa centre. The Chinese visa application service page for Karachi lists current requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the cheapest MOE-listed university for MBBS in China?

By annual cost from Year 2 in our directory, Beihua University and Dali University are tied at about US$3,700. Beihua has the lowest tuition (RMB 21,000), while Dali's fee table gives a slightly lower six-year total because its hostel is cheaper. Confirm the current fee with the university.

Is the cheapest MBBS university in China good enough for PMDC registration?

Price does not decide that. The university must be a recognised institution and you must pass the registration exam. Both Beihua and Dali are listed as PMDC-approved in our directory. Verify on pmdc.pk and search.wdoms.org before you pay, because directory flags are not proof.

What is the lowest MBBS fee in China per year in dollars?

In our directory the lowest annual cost for a MOE-listed, PMDC-flagged university is about US$3,700 from Year 2, at Beihua and Dali. That covers tuition, hostel, visa extension and insurance. Year 1 is higher, at roughly RMB 42,000 to 44,000 at those two universities.

Are low fee universities in China safe for Pakistani students?

Safety depends on the city, the hostel and the support you get more than on the fee. Ask each university about hostel rules and halal food, and speak to a Pakistani student there. Our hostel and halal food guide helps.

Does low tuition mean low quality for Chinese medical universities?

Not automatically. Fees in China reflect city size, provincial funding and the university's own pricing as much as teaching quality. A cheaper university in a smaller city can have strong hospitals, and a pricey one can be weak on clinical exposure. Compare hospital networks, bed numbers and graduate outcomes before comparing price.

How much extra should I budget beyond tuition?

Plan for hostel, insurance and visa costs of about RMB 7,000 to 9,000 a year on top of tuition, and add food and flights. Year 1 adds roughly RMB 15,000 to 17,000 in one-time charges. Our directory figures are a floor, so build in a buffer and check our total cost post.

Can I get a scholarship to reduce the fee further?

Some universities here list merit awards, for example Southwest Medical and Ningxia Medical. Amounts range from RMB 3,000 to 30,000 and are not guaranteed. A full CSC award for MBBS is uncertain, so check campuschina.org and never pay an agent for a government scholarship application.

Is MDCAT needed for these universities?

No, not since the PM&DC notice of 5 October 2026. MDCAT is still needed for colleges inside Pakistan. Check pmdc.pk for any other conditions before you apply.
