The University of Calgary Entrance Scholarship is one of the simpler scholarships a Pakistani student can aim for, mostly because there is no separate scholarship application at the start. You apply for undergraduate admission, and the university considers you for an entrance award as part of that process. The catch is that the amount is not published as a fixed figure, so you are applying for a scholarship whose value you will only know once the university decides.

This guide explains how the award works, who it suits, what to have ready, and where students tend to slip. For the summary version, see the full scholarship details on our scholarships page.

An automatic award tied to your Bachelor's application

The University of Calgary (often called UCalgary) is in Calgary, Alberta. It gives entrance scholarships to international students starting a Bachelor's degree, and it covers all undergraduate subject areas: engineering, business, health sciences, social sciences, arts and the rest of its Bachelor's programs.

The idea is straightforward. When you submit your undergraduate application through the university portal, you are automatically in the pool for entrance scholarship consideration. No extra essay or form is needed at the initial stage.

This suits a student finishing FSc, A Levels or an equivalent qualification who already wants to study in Canada and has strong grades. It does not suit anyone looking for Master's or PhD funding. Graduate applicants are not covered by this entrance scholarship and need to look at the university's graduate funding options separately.

Why the award amount is the big unknown

The funding is listed as full or partial, and the specific amount varies. That is all that can be said with confidence. There is no published stipend, tuition percentage or fixed sum to plan around, so do not assume a full ride.

In practice this means you should build your budget as if the scholarship might be partial. Canada will ask for proof of financial support when you apply for a study permit, and a scholarship of unknown size cannot replace that planning. If you are unsure how to prepare funds, our guide on bank statements and proof of funds is a good starting point.

For the current list of entrance awards and their values, go to the university's awards and scholarships page. That page gives the full overview of entrance scholarships, awards and financial aid for international students.

Eligibility for international and Pakistani applicants

The award is for international students, and the university welcomes international students from around the world. As a Pakistani applicant you apply as an international student. The requirements are:

  • International student status.
  • Applying for a Bachelor's degree as a first semester, year 1 entrant.
  • A valid English language proficiency certificate that is no more than 2 years old.
  • An outstanding academic record.

"Outstanding academic record" is not defined with a grade cut-off. Read it as meaning that strong marks matter, because entrance scholarships are competitive. If your grades are average, you can still apply for admission, but keep your expectations about the award realistic.

Notice the year 1 entry condition. If you are planning to transfer into UCalgary after a year or two somewhere else, this particular entrance scholarship is aimed at first year entrants, so check with the university before counting on it.

The 2-year rule on English test certificates

This is the requirement most likely to catch Pakistani students out. IELTS, TOEFL and equivalent tests are accepted, but the certificate must have been issued within the last 2 years. Older certificates are explicitly not accepted.

Plenty of students sit IELTS early, then take a gap year or spend time on other applications, and by the time they apply the result has gone stale. Check the issue date on your test report before you start the application. If it will be older than 2 years when the university reviews it, book a new test now rather than after you have submitted.

What paperwork you need, and when

No documents are required at the initial application stage. After you submit, the university tells you which documents it needs. Expect these to include:

  • Your English proficiency certificate (IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent, issued within the last 2 years).
  • Academic transcripts, provided when requested.
  • Any other documents the university specifies after reviewing your application.

"No documents upfront" does not mean you can relax. When the request arrives, you will want transcripts and certificates ready to go, and Pakistani documents often need attestation first. Start that process early. Our IBCC and MOFA attestation guide explains the steps.

Applying through my.ucalgary.ca

The scholarship rides on the admission application, so the steps are the admission steps:

  1. Go to ucalgary.ca and open the application form.
  2. Create your eID, the electronic identity used for the University of Calgary portal.
  3. Log in to my.ucalgary.ca, go to your dashboard, and complete each step of the application.
  4. Submit the application. Scholarship consideration is automatic for eligible undergraduate applicants.
  5. Watch your email and the student portal for document requests, admission decisions and scholarship updates.

Step five gets neglected. Once you submit, the university confirms which documents it needs, and that message lands in your email or on the portal. Check both regularly, including your spam folder.

Timing your application inside the August to April window

The application window opens on August 15 and closes on April 1 each year. The university typically opens applications around August, so confirm the current cycle and exact deadline on the official portal before you plan around these dates.

Applying early is the sensible approach. Early applicants are said to have better chances, and an early submission also leaves time for the document request that follows, any attestation work, and then the study permit. A rough plan for a Pakistani student:

  • Before August: check your English test date and book a fresh test if needed. Get transcripts and certificates in order.
  • From August 15: create your eID and submit the admission application as soon as you are ready.
  • After submission: respond quickly when the university asks for documents.
  • Before April 1: make sure everything is in. Leaving it to the final weeks is a risk you do not need to take.

The study permit comes after the offer

A scholarship offer does not get you into Canada. You still need a Study Permit, which you apply for online through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada at ircc.canada.ca after receiving your acceptance letter.

Requirements include the acceptance letter, proof of sufficient financial support and a valid passport. Depending on your country, a police clearance certificate and medical examination may also be needed. Processing times vary by country, typically somewhere around 8-16 weeks, so apply as soon as you have your offer letter. Some nationalities qualify for the Student Direct Stream (SDS) for faster processing; check the IRCC website for whether it applies to you rather than assuming.

For Pakistani applicants, biometrics are collected at the Canadian High Commission in Islamabad (Diplomatic Enclave, Sector G-5, phone +92-51-2080000). You can check application status on the IRCC status page. Once in Canada, the Embassy of Pakistan in Ottawa (151 Slater Street, Suite 101, phone +1-613-2388372) handles consular matters such as document attestation and passport renewal for students, including those in Calgary. Its site is mofa.gov.pk/canada.

Visa refusals are often about finances. If you want to understand the common reasons, read our piece on student visa rejection reasons.

Is Calgary a sensible choice for a Pakistani student?

For many students, yes. Calgary is Alberta's economic centre, with energy, technology and financial services sectors that feed internships and graduate jobs. Alberta has low provincial taxes and a cost of living that is relatively affordable compared to Toronto or Vancouver. That matters if your scholarship turns out to be partial and you are covering the rest yourself.

UCalgary is described as one of Canada's top research universities, with over 200 research institutes and particular strength in Engineering, Business, Health Sciences and Computer Science. If you are aiming at one of those fields, the fit is good.

Who should skip it? Graduate applicants, obviously. Also students who need a guaranteed fully funded place before they can commit, since the award amount here is uncertain until you receive it.

Mistakes that cost applicants the award

  • Submitting an English test result older than 2 years. It will be rejected.
  • Applying near April 1 instead of early in the window.
  • Assuming the scholarship will be full and skipping proof-of-funds planning.
  • Missing the document request after submission because nobody checked the portal.
  • Applying as a Master's or PhD student expecting this award to apply.
