Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship 2027: Nomination, Eligibility and Deadlines

How the University of Toronto's fully funded Pearson award works for Pakistani students: the one-per-school nomination, eligibility rules, the three deadlines and the AI ban.

The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship is the University of Toronto's top award for international undergraduates. It pays for four years of tuition, books, incidental fees and residence, and it picks roughly 37 students a year. That small number is the first thing to absorb. This is a long shot for everyone, including the strongest students in Lahore, Karachi or Islamabad.

It is also unusual in how you get in the door. You cannot simply apply. Your high school has to nominate you, and each school can nominate only one student per year. If you are a Pakistani student in your final year of school and you need a Canadian study permit, this guide walks through what the award covers, how the nomination works and where applicants lose their chance. For the condensed version, see the full scholarship details.

What four years of Pearson funding pays for

The award covers the main costs of an undergraduate degree at U of T for four years:

  • Full tuition fees
  • Books and incidental fees
  • Full residence support for the whole four-year period

For a Pakistani family, residence support matters as much as tuition. Housing in Toronto is expensive, and a tuition-only award often leaves a gap that families end up covering through savings or loans. Pearson closes most of that gap. The source does not list a separate airfare, visa fee or health insurance payment, so do not assume those are included. Check the official Pearson page for anything outside the four items above.

Scholars also get access to enrichment and support programs run by the Pearson Program Office, which sits inside U of T's Centre for International Experience. The scholar community draws students from 188 countries.

The one-nomination-per-school rule

This is where most Pakistani students either get their chance or lose it before they start. The scholarship requires a nomination from your high school guidance counsellor, principal or head of school. Schools submit that nomination through a secure online form provided by the university, and a school can put forward only one student per year.

Two things follow from that. First, you need to find out whether your school is eligible to nominate at all. Ask your counsellor or principal directly. Second, if several strong students at your school want to apply, the school will have to choose one. If you wait until September to bring it up, someone else may already have the nomination.

The nomination period opens on July 6, 2026 and the school deadline is October 9, 2026. A school that has never nominated a student before may need time to understand the process, so the earlier you raise it, the better.

Eligibility for the 2027 intake

The award is open to international students who need a study permit to study in Canada. Pakistani students fall in that group, but you must meet every one of these conditions:

  • You are in the final year of senior secondary school in 2026/2027, or you graduated no earlier than June 2026.
  • You will begin undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto in September 2027.
  • You have been nominated by your guidance counsellor, principal or head of school.
  • You are not currently in post-secondary studies, and you are not starting post-secondary studies in January 2027 at U of T or anywhere else.

That last point catches some students. If you finished school earlier and are already in the first year of a BS program in Pakistan, you are out. The same applies if you graduated before June 2026. This is for school leavers going straight into a first undergraduate degree.

U of T lists a wide range of fields for the award, including business, computer science, engineering, health and life sciences, mathematics and physical sciences, social sciences, design, music and the performing arts, literature and languages, and sustainability. The scholarship applies only to first-entry undergraduate programs.

Your top program choice is locked in

If you win, the scholarship applies only to your top choice of program at the time scholarship decisions are made. You cannot win the award and then switch into a different program and carry the funding with you. Think carefully about which program you rank first on your admission application. Pick the one you actually want to study, not the one you think looks more impressive.

Three applications, three deadlines

The Pearson process is really three separate submissions, and each depends on the one before it. Here is the order:

  1. Ask your guidance counsellor or principal whether your school can nominate and request the nomination.
  2. Your school submits the nomination form by October 9, 2026.
  3. You apply for admission to at least one U of T undergraduate program through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) by October 16, 2026.
  4. Once the nomination is processed and your admission application is in, you receive a private link to the Pearson application.
  5. You complete the Pearson application and submit all required documentation by November 6, 2026.

The private link does not arrive until both the nomination and the OUAC application are done. If your OUAC application goes in on the last day, you are squeezing your time for the scholarship application itself. Submit OUAC well before October 16 so the link reaches you with time to write properly.

Paperwork to have ready

You will need four things in total:

  • The high school nomination form (submitted by your school, not you)
  • Your U of T undergraduate admission application through OUAC
  • The Lester B. Pearson International Student Scholarship application form
  • Any supporting admission documents U of T asks for

The supporting documents depend on your program and your school system, so read U of T's admission requirements for your curriculum. If you are unsure how to organise transcripts and certificates, our documents checklist for international scholarships is a useful starting point.

The AI rule that disqualifies applicants

U of T strictly prohibits generative AI tools such as ChatGPT when writing content for its undergraduate award applications. Applicants who use AI are disqualified. This is not a soft guideline.

Many students now use AI to polish essays without thinking of it as cheating. For Pearson, do not do it at all. Write your answers yourself. Ask a teacher or family member to read them for clarity if you want feedback, but the words need to be yours.

Who should apply, and what applicants get wrong

Pearson looks for academic achievement, creativity and leadership. Good grades alone are not enough. If your record is strong but you have done little outside the classroom, you will be up against students who have led projects, started initiatives or made a visible difference in their community.

It suits a student who:

  • is in the final school year now and wants to start in September 2027
  • attends a school willing and able to nominate
  • actually wants to study at U of T, since the award works nowhere else

Mistakes that cost applicants their chance:

  • Raising the nomination with the school too late, after another student has been chosen
  • Assuming the student can submit the nomination form (the school must do it)
  • Leaving the OUAC application to the last week and running short on time for the Pearson form
  • Ranking a first-choice program for strategy rather than genuine interest, then being stuck with it
  • Using AI tools on the written answers

With only around 37 places, treat Pearson as one application among several. Apply to other options in parallel. Our list of all Canada scholarships is a good place to find backups.
