The Lester B. Pearson International Student Scholarships are the University of Toronto's top award for international students. They pay for a full four-year undergraduate degree: tuition, books, incidental fees and residence. Approximately 37 students are named Pearson Scholars each year, which makes this one of the most competitive scholarships open to international school leavers anywhere in Canada.

For a Pakistani student finishing FSc, A-levels or another senior secondary qualification, this is about as complete as undergraduate funding gets. The catch is the route in. You cannot apply on your own. Your high school has to nominate you, and it can nominate only one student per year. You can see the full scholarship details on our listing, but this guide focuses on how the process actually works and where students trip up.

What four years of full funding includes

The award covers full tuition for four years, books and incidental fees, and full residence support for four years. That last item matters. Many "full" scholarships cover tuition and leave you to find housing in an expensive city. Pearson residence support removes the biggest living cost a first-year student in Toronto would otherwise face.

The source information lists those three categories and nothing else. It does not mention a cash stipend, flights or health insurance, so do not assume any of them. If you need to know how meals, travel home or other day-to-day costs are handled, check the official Pearson page before you build a budget around the award.

Scholars also get access to enrichment and support programs through the Centre for International Experience at U of T, and they join a small cohort of around 37 scholars selected each year.

Eligibility hinges on timing and on your school

The scholarship is open to international students, defined as non-Canadians who need a study permit. That includes Pakistani citizens. The other conditions are mostly about where you are in your education right now:

  • You must be in the final year of senior secondary school in 2026/2027, or have graduated no earlier than June 2026.
  • You must be starting studies at the University of Toronto in September 2027.
  • You must not be attending post-secondary studies now, and you must not be starting post-secondary studies in January 2027.
  • You must be nominated by your current high school.
  • You must apply for admission to an undergraduate program at U of T.

The post-secondary rule catches people out. If you have already started a bachelor's degree in Pakistan, even for a semester, you are outside the rules. The same applies if you plan to start one in January 2027 as a fallback. This award is for first-entry undergraduates only.

Eligible fields are broad: business, commerce and management; data and computer science; design and visual studies; engineering; health and life sciences; literature, language and culture; mathematics and physical sciences; music and the performing arts; social sciences; and sustainability and the environment.

Why the one-nomination-per-school rule decides everything

Most scholarships compete you against applicants from around the world. Pearson adds a first round inside your own school. Each high school can put forward one student per year, and the school picks the candidate who best fits what a Pearson Scholar should be: exceptional academic achievement, creativity, leadership and the potential to contribute to the global community.

So the first person you need to convince is your principal or guidance counsellor. If you are a strong student at a school with several strong students, think honestly about whether you are the obvious pick. If you are not, a quiet conversation with your counsellor early on will tell you more than any amount of essay polishing.

There is also the question of whether your school takes part at all. Many schools in Pakistan will never have heard of this program. A school that has not participated can apply to join by submitting an application to the University of Toronto by October 9, 2026. That is the same date as the nomination deadline, so a school joining for the first time has very little room. Raise it in July, not in October.

Three documents, three different owners

The documents list is short, but each piece comes from a different place:

  1. The school nomination form, which your school submits.
  2. Your University of Toronto undergraduate admission application, which you submit.
  3. The completed Pearson Scholarship application form, which you can only access after your nomination is processed.

The scholarship form is private. You receive a link to it once the university has processed your nomination. Students who wait for that link before starting their admission application lose time, because the admission application has its own deadline a week after nominations close. For your supporting paperwork such as transcripts, our international scholarship documents checklist is a good place to start, but follow whatever the university itself asks for.

The order of steps, with dates

  1. Ask your guidance counsellor or principal whether your school is eligible to nominate students. If it is not registered, ask it to apply to join.
  2. Make sure your school submits the nomination form by October 9, 2026. The school nomination window runs from July 6, 2026 to October 9, 2026.
  3. Apply for admission to at least one undergraduate program at U of T by October 16, 2026.
  4. Wait for the private link to the Pearson application, which arrives after your nomination is processed.
  5. Complete and submit the scholarship application and all required documentation by November 6, 2026.

Decisions are communicated between January 2027 and April 2027. Dates can change between cycles, so confirm each deadline on the official Pearson portal before you rely on it.

The generative AI ban is strict

The University of Toronto has a firm policy against using generative AI tools to create scholarship application content. Applicants found to have used them are disqualified. This is not a soft guideline. Do not draft your answers in ChatGPT and then "edit" them, and do not run your essays through tools that rewrite them for you. Write in your own words. A slightly rough answer that is clearly yours is far safer than a polished one that gets you removed from consideration.

Mistakes Pakistani applicants should avoid

  • Starting in October. The nomination window opens in July, and schools that are not registered need time to join. Check with your school early in July.
  • Leaving the U of T admission application too late. Your applicant number needs to be ready for the scholarship portal, so apply for admission as early as you can.
  • Mismatched personal details. Your name and date of birth on the scholarship application must match your admission application exactly. Watch spelling differences between your passport, school records and the forms.
  • Enrolling in a local bachelor's program "just in case". Attending post-secondary studies, or starting them in January 2027, makes you ineligible.
  • Treating this as your only plan. With approximately 37 awards a year, even outstanding students miss out. Keep other options open alongside it.

If you do win, you will still need a Canadian study permit. Our guide to common student visa rejection reasons is worth reading before you file. You can also compare this award with all Canada scholarships we cover.
