The Ernst Mach Grant (Worldwide track) pays for a research stay in Austria. It does not pay for a degree. It is run by the OeAD, Austria's Agency for Education and Internationalisation, and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research. If you are a PhD student or early-career researcher who wants to spend between one and nine months working with an Austrian professor, this is the grant to look at first. You can see the full scholarship details on our listing, and the rest of this guide explains how it works in practice.

The grant is named after the Austrian physicist and philosopher Ernst Mach. It is open across all disciplines, from engineering and natural sciences to social sciences and the humanities. The catch, and it is a big one, is that you need an Austrian host to invite you before you can apply.

A research stay, not a scholarship for a whole PhD

Many Pakistani students find this grant while searching for "fully funded PhD in Austria" and then get confused. The Ernst Mach Grant does not fund enrolment in a doctoral programme. It funds a short stay for someone who is already enrolled or employed at an institution outside Austria.

Typical uses for the stay include gathering data for a thesis, working with specialised laboratory facilities in Austria, or collaborating with an Austrian supervisor on a defined piece of research. Think of it as a research visit with a stipend attached.

That makes it a strong fit for:

  • PhD candidates at a Pakistani university who want an Austrian research component inside their doctorate
  • Postdocs looking for a short international placement
  • Researchers who already have a working relationship with a professor in Vienna, Graz or Innsbruck

It is a poor fit if you have not started a PhD yet and want a full degree abroad. In that case, programmes that fund enrolled doctoral study, such as the ISTA PhD Program in Austria, are a closer match. Our all Austria scholarships guide lists the other options.

What the EUR 1,300 a month and the extras add up to

The package has five parts:

  • A monthly grant rate of approximately EUR 1,300
  • Tuition fees waived at the Austrian host institution
  • Health insurance support arranged through OeAD
  • An international travel subsidy of up to approximately EUR 1,200
  • Help with finding accommodation in Austria

Notice the word "approximately" on both money figures. Rates can change, so check the current amounts on the official OeAD page before you build a budget around them.

Austria is one of the more expensive EU countries for daily living, and Vienna is the priciest part of it. A monthly rate that is comfortable in Graz or Innsbruck can feel tight in the capital once rent is paid. If your host is in Vienna, plan for that. Do not assume the travel subsidy will cover a return ticket from Pakistan in full either. It is a subsidy with an upper limit, and fares vary.

The accommodation help is assistance, not a guaranteed room. Start looking as soon as your award is confirmed.

Eligibility, including the under-35 rule

The grant is open to any nationality except Austrian citizens, so Pakistani researchers can apply. That is unusual for European research funding, where many grants are tied to bilateral agreements with specific countries. Still, confirm on the OeAD portal that nothing has changed for your nationality before you start.

The listed requirements are:

  • Any nationality except Austrian
  • You are an enrolled PhD student, postgraduate, postdoc or active researcher at an institution outside Austria
  • You are under 35 years of age at the time of application (for the Worldwide track)
  • You have a confirmed written invitation from a host professor or research group at an Austrian university or research institution
  • You have a clear research plan for the proposed 1-9 month stay

The age limit is described as applying "generally", so if you are close to 35, check the exact cut-off and how it is calculated on the official page. Also note that OeAD runs more than one track. There is the Worldwide track, a track linked to universities of applied sciences, and regional tracks. Make sure you are applying to the one that matches your career stage and situation.

Why the host invitation decides everything

The written invitation from your Austrian host is the single most important document in the file. Without it there is no application. It has to confirm which professor or research group will supervise you, and it must be specific and signed. A vague "you are welcome to visit" email will not do.

This is where most applicants lose time. Finding a willing host takes weeks of emails, and professors often want to see a draft proposal before they agree. The source advice is to start contacting prospective hosts at least 3-4 months before the 1 February deadline. For a Pakistani applicant writing cold emails, I would treat that as the minimum and start earlier if you can.

A few things help when you write to a potential host:

  • Pick professors whose recent work clearly overlaps with your thesis, and say exactly where the overlap is
  • Explain what you need from Austria specifically, such as a lab facility, a dataset or a method the group uses
  • Mention your intended duration and that you plan to apply for the Ernst Mach Grant
  • Attach a short CV and a one-page outline of the proposed work

Keep copies of all your correspondence with the host. If something goes wrong with the letter, you will want the record.

Documents to have ready

The application asks for six items:

  1. The completed application on the OeAD grants portal
  2. The written invitation letter from your confirmed Austrian host institution
  3. A research proposal or plan for the stay
  4. Your CV and list of publications, where applicable
  5. Proof of your current enrolment or academic or research position
  6. A copy of your passport

The enrolment proof matters because the grant is only for people based at an institution outside Austria. Get a recent letter from your university or employer that states your status clearly. For a general checklist on preparing academic papers for applications abroad, see our documents checklist for international scholarships.

Writing a proposal that OeAD can actually assess

OeAD reviews applications for academic merit and feasibility. Feasibility is the part people forget. Your proposal should show that the work can be done in the months you are asking for, with the host you have.

Be concrete. Name your methods, give a timeline for the stay, and list the outputs you expect, such as a thesis chapter, a dataset or a draft paper. A general statement about wanting international exposure or loving research is not a proposal. If you are asking for nine months, the plan should justify nine months. A tight three-month project with clear deliverables often reads better than a loose long one.

The application sequence

  1. Identify a relevant Austrian host institution and secure a professor or research group willing to supervise you
  2. Get the signed written invitation letter confirming the host's agreement
  3. Prepare the research proposal covering goals, methods and expected outcomes
  4. Submit the complete application through the OeAD grants portal before 1 February
  5. OeAD reviews applications for academic merit and feasibility
  6. If you are successful, you receive an award letter and coordinate the stay with OeAD and your host

How the year runs, from autumn call to research stay

The call opens in autumn of the previous year. The deadline is 1 February. Review and selection run from February to April, and results are announced in spring. The research stay then starts on a date agreed with your host institution, within the grant year.

In practical terms, if you want to be in Austria during a given year, you should be emailing hosts the previous summer or early autumn, writing your proposal in late autumn, and submitting in January. Confirm the exact deadline for the current cycle on the official portal, since dates can shift.

Once you have your award letter, you will still need a visa for a stay of this length. Our guide on common student visa rejection reasons for Pakistani students covers the mistakes that hold people up at that stage.

Mistakes that sink otherwise good applications

  • Applying without a confirmed, signed invitation, or with one that does not name the supervisor or group
  • Treating the grant as a route into a full PhD in Austria
  • Choosing the wrong OeAD track for your career stage
  • Writing a proposal about interests instead of a plan with methods, timeline and deliverables
  • Budgeting for Vienna as if it costs the same as a smaller city
  • Leaving the host search until December
