OeAD Scholarships for International Students: Funding, Eligibility and How to Apply

OeAD runs many Austrian grants, not one. Here is how the programs differ, what they can cover, which documents you need and how Pakistani students should pick and apply.

Most scholarship guides describe one program with one deadline and one stipend. OeAD scholarships do not work like that. The OeAD (Austria's Agency for Education and Internationalisation) is the central Austrian agency for international mobility and cooperation in education, science and research, and it runs a whole collection of grant programs for incoming students and researchers. Some are funded by the Republic of Austria, some by the European Commission, and some by other international partners. So when someone tells you to "apply for the OeAD scholarship", the honest reply is: which one?

This guide explains how the OeAD system works, what kind of support you can expect, what you need to prepare, and where Pakistani applicants tend to lose time. For the summary card, see the full scholarship details.

One agency, many different grants

The OeAD is the administrative body behind these grants. It handles applications, selection and payments. The individual programs cover different academic levels: bachelor's, master's and PhD study, plus post-doctoral research stays at Austrian universities and research institutions.

The part that matters most for planning: terms, eligibility rules and funding amounts vary significantly from program to program. They depend on the specific scholarship, on your country of origin and on your academic field. Your first job is to find the program that fits your profile and research interests. You do not apply to "OeAD" in general.

Is this a full ride? Sometimes

Some OeAD programs cover full living costs and tuition. Others give partial support. Do not assume either until you have read the terms of the exact grant you are targeting.

The support that appears across programs includes:

  • Monthly scholarship installments, with the amount set by each program
  • Exemption from tuition fees at public universities (program dependent)
  • Health insurance coverage (program dependent)
  • Accommodation assistance (program dependent)
  • Travel cost subsidies (program dependent)

Notice how often "program dependent" appears. A grant may pay a monthly installment and nothing else, or it may bundle several of these items. If a program you like turns out to be partial, work out early how you will cover the gap, because a partial award will not carry you through a full degree on its own. Our guide on bank statements and proof of funds is useful if you end up topping up a partial grant with family money.

Eligibility, and the nationality question

The general requirements across OeAD programs are:

  • You must be an international student or researcher.
  • You must meet the admission requirements of your chosen Austrian host institution.
  • You must meet the academic criteria set by the specific scholarship program.
  • You need German or English language proficiency, as required by your study program.
  • You must not be receiving concurrent funding from other Austrian government sources.

Since eligibility and funding depend partly on the applicant's country of origin, do not take it for granted that every program is open to Pakistani citizens. Some programs are tied to particular countries or partnerships. Filter the OeAD database by your country first and check the eligibility for your nationality on each program you shortlist.

The rule on concurrent Austrian government funding deserves attention. If you already hold, or are applying for, another Austrian government grant, read the rules of both programs before you accept anything.

The paperwork behind an OeAD application

Each program sets its own list, but these 7 documents come up again and again:

  1. Academic transcripts and certificates
  2. Curriculum vitae
  3. Letter of motivation
  4. Letters of recommendation
  5. Research proposal (for PhD applicants and researchers)
  6. Letter of acceptance from an Austrian host institution
  7. Proof of language proficiency

The acceptance letter is the item that catches people out. Several programs expect you to already have a place or a host at an Austrian university or research institution, and Austrian universities may run their own separate admission process. That means two applications on two timelines, and the university side often takes longer. For Pakistani transcripts and degrees, give yourself time for attestation as well. Our documents checklist for international scholarships covers the usual preparation.

Applying through the OeAD portal

Most programs take applications through the official OeAD online portal, which is also where you track your application status. The process usually runs like this:

  1. Visit the official OeAD scholarship database and search for available programs.
  2. Pick the scholarship that matches your academic level and country.
  3. Read the detailed requirements and the deadline for that program.
  4. Register and create an account on the OeAD online application portal.
  5. Upload every document the program guidelines ask for.
  6. Submit before the stated deadline.
  7. Wait for the selection results, which come through the portal.

Why there is no single OeAD deadline

Opening dates and deadlines vary by specific program. There is no one date to circle on the calendar, and any article giving a single OeAD deadline for everyone is guessing. Once you have chosen a program, take its deadline from the official portal and plan backwards from it.

Plan backwards generously. Recommendation letters from Pakistani faculty, attested transcripts and an Austrian admission or host letter can each take weeks. Starting early is the single most practical tip for this scholarship, because the documents you need from your home university are often the slowest.

Where applicants go wrong

From the way these programs are structured, a few mistakes are easy to predict.

The first is treating OeAD as one scholarship. Applicants read about one program, then assume its benefits and rules apply to another. They do not. Read each program's terms separately.

The second is a generic research proposal. If you are applying at PhD or post-doctoral level, your proposal should line up clearly with the priorities of that specific scholarship. A proposal written for a different funder and pasted in tends to show.

The third is forgetting about university admission. Check whether your chosen Austrian university requires its own admission application, separate from the OeAD one, and start it in parallel.

The fourth is going silent after submitting. Keep your contact details in the OeAD portal up to date so messages reach you on time, and check the FAQ section on the OeAD website for common application problems before you email anyone.

Who suits OeAD funding? Researchers and graduate students who already have, or can realistically get, an Austrian host institution and a clear academic plan. If you want a single fully funded bachelor's package with one simple form, you will probably find the OeAD system slow going, and you should compare it with other options in all Austria scholarships.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the right OeAD scholarship for me?

Use the official OeAD scholarship database. It lets you filter by country of origin, academic level and field of study, which narrows the list quickly.

Are OeAD scholarships fully funded?

It depends on the program. Some cover full living costs and tuition, others give partial support. Check the details of each scholarship before applying.

Can I apply for more than one OeAD program?

Yes, if you meet the eligibility criteria for each. Check each program's rules on concurrent funding, since recipients generally must not hold funding from other Austrian government sources at the same time.

Do I need German?

You need proficiency in German or English, depending on what your study program requires. Many applicants can work in English, but confirm the language of your specific course.

Can Pakistani students apply?

The programs are for international students and researchers, but eligibility varies by country of origin. Filter the database by Pakistan and confirm eligibility on each program's page before preparing documents.

Before you start, read the current program list on the OeAD grants and scholarships overview page and keep the OeAD scholarship details handy as you plan.
