About the Ernst Mach Grant โ€“ Worldwide

๐Ÿ• 3 min read

The Ernst Mach Grant โ€“ Worldwide is one of the OeAD's flagship scholarship instruments, funded by Austria's Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research. Named after the Austrian physicist and philosopher Ernst Mach, the grant is open to young researchers of essentially any nationality (Austrian citizens are not eligible) who wish to carry out a research project at an Austrian university, university of applied sciences, or research institution.

2

Unlike Austria's ISTA PhD Program, which funds enrolled doctoral study at a single elite research institute, the Ernst Mach Grant is a shorter, more flexible research-stay instrument aimed at students and academics who are already pursuing a degree or research career at an institution outside Austria and want to spend one to nine months conducting research abroad โ€” for example, gathering thesis data, using specialised Austrian laboratory facilities, or collaborating with an Austrian supervisor.

3

Applicants across all disciplines can apply, from natural sciences and engineering to social sciences and the humanities, provided they can secure a written invitation from a host institution in Austria confirming the professor or research group willing to supervise the stay. This host confirmation is the single most important document in the application and should be arranged well before the deadline.

4

Financial support includes a monthly grant rate, waived tuition fees at the host institution, health insurance assistance, and an international travel subsidy, making the total package genuinely cover the cost of a multi-month stay in Austria โ€” one of the more expensive countries in the EU for daily living costs, particularly in Vienna.

5

Because the grant funds a stay rather than a full degree, it is particularly well suited to PhD candidates who want an Austrian research component within a doctorate being completed at their home university, as well as postdocs seeking a short-term international research placement.

Insider Tips & Pro Tips

TIP 1

Start contacting prospective Austrian hosts at least 3-4 months before the 1 February deadline

TIP 2

Make the research proposal concrete: specific methods, timeline, and expected deliverables, not a general interest statement

TIP 3

Confirm which OeAD track applies to your career stage (Worldwide vs. university of applied sciences vs. regional tracks) before applying

TIP 4

Budget for Vienna's higher cost of living if your host institution is in the capital

TIP 5

Keep copies of all correspondence with your host institution โ€” the invitation letter must be specific and signed
