Chevening is the UK government's global scholarship program. It pays for a one-year Master's degree at a UK university, and it is funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations. Every year it draws applicants from over 140 countries and territories, and it is one of the most competitive awards a Master's applicant can go for.

This guide explains how the award works, what it pays for, what the selection process actually looks for and where applicants usually go wrong. For the condensed version, see the full scholarship details.

A leadership award that happens to fund a Master's

The single most useful thing to understand about Chevening is that it is not mainly an academic scholarship. Grades matter enough to get you into a UK Master's course, but the program is looking for people with the passion, influence and ambition to solve pressing local, national or global challenges. Selection is built around leadership potential and a clear vision for the future.

That shapes who it suits. If you have spent a couple of years working, have led something (a team, a project, a community effort, a policy initiative) and can explain what you want to change back home, Chevening fits you well. If you are a fresh graduate hoping to go straight into a Master's, you are not eligible yet, because the award asks for at least two years of work experience.

It also asks for commitment. Scholars must return to their country of citizenship for at least two years after the award ends. If your real plan is to settle in the UK after your degree, this is the wrong scholarship, and applying anyway is a poor use of a very long process.

What a fully funded Chevening award pays for

The award is meant to cover the costs of studying in the UK so that you can focus on your degree and your professional goals. The package includes:

  • A full tuition fee waiver
  • A monthly living stipend
  • Economy class return airfare to the UK
  • An arrival allowance
  • A homeward departure allowance
  • The cost of one visa application
  • A travel grant to attend Chevening events in the UK

Exact stipend amounts are not listed here, so check the current figures on the official Chevening website. Note that the visa cost covers one application. Getting your visa paperwork right the first time matters, and our guide to common student visa rejection reasons is worth reading before you file.

Beyond the money, scholars join a global community of over 60,000 alumni, including numerous current or former heads of state or government. There is also professional development, leadership training and the chance to engage with UK culture, history and society. For someone planning a career in public service, development or policy, that network is a large part of the value.

The six eligibility conditions, and the one that trips people up

To apply, you must:

  • Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory
  • Agree to return to your country of citizenship for at least two years after the award ends
  • Hold an undergraduate degree that allows entry into a postgraduate program at a UK university
  • Have at least two years of work experience
  • Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and receive an unconditional offer from one of them
  • Meet the Chevening English language requirement

On nationality: the eligible country list is set by Chevening, so check that your country appears on it for the current cycle on the official website. Pakistani applicants should confirm this themselves rather than assume.

The English language requirement is not spelled out in detail here, and the accepted tests and scores can change, so read the current guidance on the official Chevening website.

There is no upper age limit. Mid-career professionals sometimes rule themselves out thinking the award is for young graduates. It is not.

The condition that catches people is the three-course rule. You must pick three different eligible UK Master's courses. You can apply for the scholarship before you hold any university offer, but by the offer deadline you must have an unconditional offer from one of them. A conditional offer that you never convert does not count, so plan your university applications as seriously as the scholarship itself.

Paperwork to have ready

The document list is short, but each item has a timing catch:

  • Two reference letters
  • A valid passport or national ID
  • Your undergraduate education certificate or diploma
  • An unconditional offer from a UK university

Documents are uploaded after you are shortlisted for interview, and the unconditional offer comes even later. References are the item applicants leave too late. Ask your referees early, tell them what the award is about, and give them enough time. A rushed, generic reference does you no favours. If you want a broader checklist, see our documents checklist for international scholarships.

From online form to interview panel: the selection route

Chevening runs one of the longest selection processes of any scholarship. In order, it goes like this:

  1. You submit an online application through the official Chevening website.
  2. Applications are sifted against the eligibility criteria.
  3. Independent reading committees assess the eligible applications.
  4. British embassies and high commissions produce a shortlist of candidates.
  5. Shortlisted candidates are invited to interview.
  6. Candidates upload the required documents to the online system.
  7. Interview panels are held at British embassies and high commissions.
  8. Successful candidates are told their results.
  9. Successful candidates submit an unconditional offer from a UK university by the deadline.

Two points stand out. First, a person at the British embassy or high commission is reading your application and later interviewing you, so your answers need to connect to your own country's problems, not to abstract ambitions. Second, the eligibility sift is mechanical. If you are missing work experience or have not listed three courses, a strong essay will not save you.

The cycle runs almost a full year

Here is the published timeline for the current cycle:

StageTiming
Applications open4 August 2026
Application deadline6 October 2026
Eligibility siftOctober 2026
Reading committee assessmentsMid-October 2026 to January 2027
Shortlisting for interviewsMid-February 2027
InterviewsMarch to April 2027
Results announcementMid-June 2027
Offer submission deadline8 July 2027

The deadline falls at 11:00 UTC, not midnight. Convert that to your local time well in advance, because applicants who work to the end of the day in their own time zone can find the portal already closed. The program typically opens in August each year, so if you miss this round, the next one is not far off.

Notice the gap between results in mid-June and the offer deadline on 8 July 2027. That is a short window. If your university offers are still conditional in June, you will be under pressure, so try to meet offer conditions (transcripts, English test results) as early as possible.

Where strong candidates lose marks

Most applicants who fail are not weak people. They are people who wrote a weak application. A few patterns are worth avoiding.

Choosing courses at random. The three courses should fit a clear plan. Research them properly before applying, and be ready to explain in interview why each one serves your goals. Three unrelated courses suggest you have not thought it through.

Describing duties instead of leadership. Listing your job responsibilities is not the same as showing leadership potential. Show where you took initiative, influenced others or changed an outcome.

A vague future. Chevening wants to see a vision for the future and how a UK degree helps you reach it. "I want to contribute to my country" is not a plan. Name the problem, the role you want and what the degree adds.

Ignoring the return condition. Your story should make sense with you working back home for at least two years. Interviewers notice when it does not.

Skipping the official guidance. Read the application guidance on the Chevening website in full. It is the authority on questions, word limits and current requirements, and it changes between cycles.
