Chevening is the UK Government's own scholarship for people who already have a working life behind them. It is funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), run by the Chevening Secretariat, and pays for a one-year Master's degree at an eligible UK university of your choice. Since 1983 it has funded more than 50,000 scholars from over 160 countries, and Pakistan is one of the countries where it runs every year.
The thing most Pakistani applicants misunderstand is who Chevening is for. It is not a reward for a high CGPA. It is a bet on people who have worked, led something, and can explain exactly what a UK Master's will let them do next. If you graduated last month, this is not your year. If you have spent a few years in a job, an NGO, a newsroom, a government office or a lab and you have a clear plan, it may be the strongest option you have. You can see the full scholarship details on our scholarship page.

What the Chevening package pays for
This is one of the most complete funding packages a Pakistani student can get for a UK Master's. It includes:
- full tuition fees at any eligible UK university
- a monthly living allowance, adjusted for the cost of living where your university is located
- full reimbursement of the UK visa application fee
- economy-class return airfare between Pakistan and the UK
- an arrival and settlement allowance
- an extra travel grant for attending official Chevening events in the UK
The location adjustment matters. UK living costs are higher than in most scholarship destinations, and London is more expensive than most other cities. Chevening sets the stipend by your university's location, so you are not expected to live in London on a stipend meant for a cheaper city. There are no co-payments built into the award, which is a big difference from partial scholarships where you still need a family sponsor and a heavy bank statement.
Why the 2,800-hour work rule decides most applications
Chevening asks for at least two years of work experience, which it counts as 2,800 hours, completed before the application deadline. Paid work, voluntary work, part-time jobs and internships all count toward that total. This is a fixed requirement, so count your hours honestly before you start writing essays.
Two practical points for Pakistani applicants. First, you cannot apply in the same year you finish your undergraduate degree, so fresh graduates are out. Second, voluntary work and internships do count, which helps people who did meaningful unpaid work alongside their studies or in a gap period. Keep proof of each role (experience letters, internship certificates, contracts), because you will need to show proof of at least two years of work.
Eligibility for Pakistani applicants
Chevening is open to citizens of over 160 countries, and Pakistan has its own country page and quota. For Pakistani citizens, the main conditions are:
- a completed undergraduate degree equivalent to 16 years of education (BSc, BA, B.Com and similar)
- at least two years (2,800 hours) of paid or voluntary work experience
- applications to three different eligible UK university courses
- an unconditional offer from at least one of those three courses by July 9
- good English, usually shown through IELTS because most UK universities ask for it
- not applying in the same year you complete your undergraduate degree
Because awards are allocated country by country, selection reflects both your own merit and the UK Government's priorities for Pakistan. Some countries have additional requirements or restrictions, so read the Chevening Pakistan page for priority sectors and the current eligibility checklist before you commit.
Any field is allowed. Law, public policy, international relations, engineering, sciences, business, social sciences and journalism are all common choices. Medicine is possible only through non-clinical Master's programmes. Chevening also funds only one-year Master's courses, so a two-year Master's or a PhD will not work.
The July 9 offer deadline and why it trips people up
Winning the Chevening selection is not the end. To confirm the award you must hold at least one unconditional offer from a UK university by July 9. Many strong candidates lose time here because they wait to hear from Chevening before applying to universities. That is too late.
Apply to your three universities as soon as their portals open, which is typically September or October, roughly when you are also submitting your Chevening application. You may apply to more than three universities, but you list only three in the Chevening form. Use the Chevening course finder to check that each programme is eligible.
"Unconditional" is the key word. A conditional offer that still depends on an IELTS score does not meet the requirement. The Chevening application itself does not ask for IELTS, but your universities will. Most UK universities want IELTS 6.5 or above, and some competitive programmes ask for 7.0 or 7.5. Book your test early enough that a retake is still possible.
Documents to have ready
The document list is short, but each item takes time to arrange in Pakistan:
- a valid passport
- a CV
- educational transcripts and degree certificates
- two reference letters from professional or academic referees
- proof of work experience covering at least two years
- at least one unconditional offer letter from a UK university (by July 9)
- an English language certificate, usually IELTS
If your degree documents need attestation for university admissions, start early. Our IBCC and MOFA attestation guide walks through the process.
The four essays carry the application
Chevening evaluates you on four areas: leadership, networking, why you want to study in the UK, and your career plan. Each has its own essay.
Leadership
Describe a specific situation where you led. Leadership here does not mean a job title. It means you saw a problem, took responsibility and changed something. Name the situation, what you did and what happened.
Networking
Explain how you have built relationships and used them to get something done. Generic lines about being a people person are weak. A concrete example of bringing the right people together for a result is strong.
Studying in the UK
Explain why a UK education, and these particular courses, matter for your goals. If your reasons would fit any country, the essay is not specific enough.
Career plan
Describe what you will do after the scholarship and how Chevening helps you get there. Vague statements about wanting to help Pakistan, without evidence and a realistic path, are the most common weakness. Candidates with a clear plan that depends on a specific UK Master's often beat applicants with better grades and vaguer motivation.
How the process runs from August to September
- Shortlist eligible one-year Master's programmes through the course finder.
- Apply directly to three UK universities (more if you like, but only three go in the Chevening form).
- Submit your Chevening application on the official portal with all four essays.
- Ask two referees for reference letters. Referees get about one week after the application deadline (October 14 in the usual cycle).
- If shortlisted, attend an interview with the Chevening office in Pakistan, in person or online, between February and April.
- Final selections are announced in June.
- Secure at least one unconditional university offer by July 9.
- Accept the award, complete your visa, and start your Master's, usually in September or October.
Application dates repeat annually, but they are not guaranteed to be identical each year. Treat the dates above as the typical pattern and confirm the exact opening and closing dates on the official portal for the current cycle.
What the interview actually tests
The interview is typically a 30-45 minute panel, held in person or online. Expect questions on your leadership experience, career plan, programme choice and reasons for the UK. Panels look for specific examples, consistency with what you wrote, and evidence that you can build networks.
Reread your four essays before the interview. Have 5-6 concrete professional stories you can tell clearly, and be ready to explain how your chosen course connects to your next job. If something in your essays was stretched, the panel is likely to find it.
Mistakes that cost Pakistani applicants the award
- Applying without the full 2,800 hours by the deadline. There is no flexibility on this.
- Writing essays as statements of intent rather than stories with real examples.
- Waiting for Chevening results before applying to universities, then missing July 9.
- Choosing referees by seniority rather than by how well they know your work.
- Leaving IELTS until after the interview stage, which turns a conditional offer into a lost award.
- Ignoring the Pakistan page, which lists priority sectors and country-specific notes.
One good source of help is Chevening alumni in Pakistan. Many are willing to review essays and talk about their interview. For UK student visa and Chevening queries, the British High Commission in Islamabad is the official contact, and award letters are coordinated through it. For visa preparation more generally, see our guide to common student visa rejection reasons. If Chevening is not the right fit, compare it with all UK scholarships we cover.
Frequently asked questions
Can fresh graduates apply for Chevening?
No. You need at least two years (2,800 hours) of paid or voluntary work experience, and you cannot apply in the same year you finish your undergraduate degree.
Do I need IELTS to apply?
Not for the Chevening application itself. Your UK universities will usually require it, though, and you need an unconditional offer by July 9. Most universities ask for IELTS 6.5 or above, and some competitive courses ask for 7.0 or 7.5.
Which UK universities can I choose?
Almost all UK universities are eligible, from Oxford and Cambridge to specialist institutions, as long as the course is a one-year Master's. Check each course in the Chevening course finder.
Do internships and volunteer work count toward the experience requirement?
Yes. Paid work, voluntary work, part-time work and internships all count toward the 2,800 hours.
Are grades important?
They matter, but they are not the main factor. Selection focuses on leadership, work experience, the quality of your four essays and your interview.
How competitive is it?
Very. Thousands of candidates from over 160 countries apply each year for a limited number of awards, and each country has its own quota.
Before you start, confirm this year's dates and requirements on the official Chevening website, and keep the full Chevening scholarship page open as you prepare.
