University of Leeds International Excellence Scholarships: Award Sizes, Eligibility and How to Apply

A practical guide for Pakistani students to the Leeds International Excellence Scholarship: the £3,000 to £16,000 fee reductions, the 2:1 requirement, excluded courses and the one-month application buffer.

The University of Leeds International Excellence Scholarship is a tuition fee reduction for international students starting a taught Master's degree at Leeds. It is merit-based, it comes in three sizes (£3,000, £6,000 or £16,000), and it applies to your first year of fees only. There are 500 awards in the cycle for students starting in September 2026.

That is a partial scholarship, and Pakistani students should read it that way from the start. Even the top award will not pay your rent, your visa costs or your food. What it does is cut the tuition bill, sometimes by a lot, for a strong student who is already planning to fund most of a UK Master's on their own. You can read the full scholarship details on our listing, and this guide goes through how the award works in practice.

Three award sizes, and only the first year

The scholarship is a direct discount on tuition. You never receive cash. The three levels are £3,000, £6,000 and £16,000, and the information available does not explain how the university decides who gets which amount. Do not assume you will land the £16,000 award because your grades are good. Plan your budget on the smallest figure and treat anything bigger as a bonus.

The reduction covers the first year of study only. If your programme runs longer than a year, the later fees are yours to pay. The award also has some firm limits:

  • It cannot be used for maintenance, accommodation or other living costs.
  • It cannot be moved to a different course.
  • It cannot be deferred to a later academic year.

The deferral rule catches people out. If you win the award and then push your start back a year because of a visa delay or family reasons, the scholarship does not travel with you.

Stacking it with other funding

You can combine the Excellence Scholarship with the Leeds International Regional Scholarship or with external funding, as long as the total does not go above 100% of your tuition fees. That makes it useful alongside a government or employer award that only covers part of your fees.

There is one catch. If you qualify for more than one University of Leeds scholarship, you may only accept the one with the highest value. So the Regional Scholarship is named as combinable, but do not expect to collect several Leeds awards on top of each other. Read the terms of every scholarship you hold to check they sit together.

Is a Pakistani student eligible?

The scheme is described as open to students from over 140 countries. The country list itself is not reproduced here, so check the official page to confirm your nationality is included before you build your plan around this award.

Beyond nationality, the eligibility rules are:

  • You must be classified as an international student for fee purposes.
  • You must hold a conditional or unconditional offer for an eligible taught Master's course starting in September 2026.
  • You must be self-funded or partially funded.
  • You must have, or be predicted to get, at least a Bachelor's degree with a 2:1 (hons) or equivalent.
  • You must show excellent professional and personal skills through work experience or extracurricular activities.

The university also applies a visa brake for nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan, which affects eligibility for those who need a Student visa. If you hold one of those nationalities, read that section of the official page closely.

The 2:1 requirement is where Pakistani applicants need to be careful. Most Pakistani transcripts show a CGPA or percentage, not a UK degree class, so Leeds will convert your result. Their list of documents includes your grading scale if it is not clear from the transcript, and that tells you how much the conversion matters. The source does not give a Pakistani CGPA cut-off, so check the equivalence on the Leeds website rather than relying on what a friend was told.

The "self-funded or partially funded" condition matters too. If a full scholarship already covers your fees, this award is not meant for you.

Courses that do not qualify

All taught Master's courses are in scope except two groups: the MBA, which has its own separate excellence scheme, and every fully-online course. Research degrees are not mentioned as eligible, so a PhD or MPhil applicant should look elsewhere. If you are choosing between two similar programmes, confirm both are on the eligible list before you apply.

The paperwork Leeds asks for

The documents are standard for a UK Master's application:

  1. Official degree certificate
  2. Academic transcripts showing your degree class or grade
  3. Grading scale, if it is not clear from your transcripts
  4. Evidence of English language proficiency
  5. Previous immigration documents, if you studied in the UK before on a Student visa

For Pakistani students, the grading scale is the item worth getting right. If your transcript prints the scale on the back, scan both sides so it is not lost. If your final degree is not yet complete, your predicted result has to support a 2:1 or equivalent. Our documents checklist for international scholarships covers how to prepare transcripts and certificates in general.

There is no separate scholarship form

You apply for the scholarship inside your course application. The steps are:

  1. Find an eligible taught Master's course through the University of Leeds Course Search.
  2. Apply for that course through the university applicant portal.
  3. Indicate that you are applying for the scholarship in the funding section of the course application form.
  4. Submit everything at least one month before the scholarship deadline.
  5. Wait for the outcome, which was due by 26 June 2026 in the last cycle.

Step 3 is the one people miss. If you skip the funding section or leave it vague, you have not applied for the scholarship at all, however strong your profile is. The university also suggests that international applicants can use its approved overseas representatives. That is optional, and the application goes through the same portal either way.

Why the one-month buffer changes your real deadline

The published deadline for the September 2026 intake was 29 May 2026, but your course application should be in at least one month before that. In practice your working deadline is late April, not late May. Some courses also have their own application deadline that falls earlier than the general university one, so check the course page as well.

The sequence for the last cycle looked like this:

  • 29 May 2026: scholarship application deadline
  • 26 June 2026: outcome notification
  • September 2026: course start

That leaves roughly two to three months between hearing about the scholarship and starting your course. For a Pakistani student that window has to cover the Student visa, proof of funds and travel. You will know your exact fee bill after June, but you should not wait until then to arrange money. Our guide to bank statements and proof of funds explains what to prepare. Dates for the next round have not been announced, so check the official page for the new cycle.

Who should go for it, and who should not count on it

This award suits a student with a solid first-class or upper second equivalent, some work experience or real extracurricular involvement, and a family budget that can cover most of a UK Master's already. For that student, even £3,000 off the fees is worth the small extra effort of ticking the right box.

It is a poor fit if you need a full scholarship to study abroad at all. Even at the £16,000 level you still need to fund living costs and any fees beyond the award, and you need to show those funds for your visa. If that is your situation, look at fully funded options in our all UK scholarships guide.

The mistakes that cost applicants this award are usually simple ones:

  • Applying for the course close to the deadline and leaving no time for processing.
  • Forgetting to mention the scholarship in the funding section.
  • Choosing an MBA or an online programme and assuming it qualifies.
  • Planning a budget around the largest award before any decision is made.
  • Ignoring the personal and professional skills requirement. Grades alone are not the whole test, so make your work experience and activities visible in your application.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the scholarship for living costs?

No. It is strictly a reduction in first-year tuition fees and cannot be used for maintenance or accommodation.

Can I combine it with other scholarships?

Yes, with the International Regional Scholarship or external funding, as long as the total does not exceed 100% of your tuition fees. If you are eligible for several Leeds scholarships, you can only accept the one with the highest value.

Are online Master's courses eligible?

No. All fully-online courses are excluded, and so is the MBA, which has its own scheme.

Do I need an offer before I can be considered?

You need a conditional or unconditional offer for an eligible taught Master's course. You indicate the scholarship in your course application, so the two run together.

Can I defer the award if my visa is delayed?

No. The scholarship cannot be deferred to a later academic year, and it cannot be moved to another course.

When does the next round open?

The opening date varies. Check the official page for the next cycle's dates and keep the one-month buffer in mind once they are published.
