Most scholarships make you apply twice: once for the university, once for the money. VinUniversity in Hanoi skips the second step. If you are admitted to an undergraduate program, you are automatically considered for its scholarship tiers, and every admitted student gets at least a 35% tuition subsidy. For a Pakistani student who wants an English-medium bachelor's degree in Asia without juggling a separate scholarship deadline, that is a rare setup. You can see the full scholarship details on our listing, but this guide goes further into how the tiers work and how to aim for the top of them.
VinUniversity was set up in Hanoi in 2020 by Vingroup, Vietnam's largest private conglomerate, and it worked with Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania on curriculum design. It is young, well funded and small. That matters for you: small classes and a new campus, but also a university that is still building its name with Pakistani employers and families back home.

How the 35% base subsidy and the four merit tiers stack up
Think of the funding as a floor with a ladder on top. The floor is the universal base scholarship: a 35% tuition subsidy for all admitted students in the 2025-2030 cohorts, applied for the full duration of the program. It comes from VinUni's 2025-2030 access initiative, and you do not need to do anything extra to get it.
Above that floor, the admissions committee places strong applicants into one of four merit tiers:
- The Discipline's Honor Scholarship pays 50%, 60% or 70% of tuition, depending on the strength of your application.
- The Dean's Distinction Scholarship pays 80% or 90% of tuition.
- The Provost's Merit Scholarship pays 100% of tuition.
- The President's Excellence Scholarship pays 100% of tuition plus an annual living allowance of approximately VND 34,965,000 (about USD 1,500).
The President's tier is reserved for a small number of students the university judges to have truly exceptional academic and leadership profiles. Do not plan your finances around getting it. Plan around the realistic middle of the range and treat anything higher as a bonus.
What USD 1,500 a year does and does not solve
Only the President's Excellence tier includes money for living costs. Every other tier, including the 100% Provost's Merit Scholarship, covers tuition only. So even a full-tuition award leaves you paying for housing, food, your visa and flights. Budget for the non-tuition portion of your costs even at the 100% tuition tier, since these are typically not covered.
Vietnam has a much lower cost of living than most Western study destinations, which helps a partial award go further. But "lower" is not "zero". Before you accept an offer, sit down with your family and work out the yearly gap between your scholarship and your real costs. The figure that decides whether this works is the remaining tuition plus living expenses, not the percentage printed on the offer letter.
The scheme also lists access to VinUni's partnerships with Cornell and Penn for faculty exchange and curriculum benchmarking. That is a feature of the university's teaching, not cash in your pocket, so do not count it as part of the award.
Who this route makes sense for
VinUniversity does not restrict applicants by nationality. The program is open to international applicants, including Pakistani students, across all its undergraduate programs.
It suits you if you have strong O/A-Levels or FSc results, can produce a competitive SAT or ACT score, and want to study business, engineering, computer science or health sciences in English. The three colleges are:
- College of Business Administration
- College of Engineering and Computer Science
- College of Health Sciences, including a pre-med track and nursing
Students also get access to Vingroup's wider ecosystem (VinFast, the Vinmec hospital system and VinBigData) for internships and applied research. For an engineering or computer science student, that link to working companies is one of the better reasons to pick VinUni over a similar private university elsewhere.
Who should think twice? If you need a master's or PhD, this is not for you, since the scheme covers bachelor's study only. And if your family cannot cover living costs at all, the President's tier is too rare to count on.
The academic bar
The eligibility requirements are:
- Completed or ongoing secondary education (O/A-Levels, FSc or equivalent) with strong overall academic standing
- Competitive scores in a recognized standardized test where the program requires it (SAT/ACT or equivalent, depending on the program)
- English proficiency evidence such as IELTS or TOEFL, or an internal English assessment for borderline cases
- A complete application through the online admissions portal, including personal essays and an extracurricular record
No exact minimum grades or test scores are given, and test requirements depend on the program. Check the requirements for your chosen college on the VinUniversity admissions portal before you book any test.
One application file decides both admission and money
You do not submit financial documents or write a separate scholarship essay. The committee reads one package (transcripts, test scores where applicable, personal essays and extracurricular record) and uses it for both the admission decision and the scholarship tier. That is less paperwork, but it also means every part of your file carries double weight. A weak essay does not just risk rejection, it can drop you a tier.
Here is what you will need to prepare:
- The completed VinUniversity online application form
- Academic transcripts (Matric and FSc/A-Level or equivalent)
- SAT or ACT scores, where applicable to your chosen college
- An IELTS or TOEFL certificate if your medium of instruction was not English
- Personal essay(s) as specified in the application portal
- A valid passport copy
- Letters of recommendation, where requested for your program
If you are gathering papers for several universities at once, our documents checklist for international scholarships helps you keep track of what you already have.
Applying, from portal account to enrollment deposit
- Choose a college (Business Administration, Engineering and Computer Science, or Health Sciences) and review the program-specific requirements on the VinUni admissions site.
- Register an account on the online application portal and complete the form with your academic history and essays.
- Submit your standardized test scores and English proficiency evidence as your program requires.
- Submit the application before the Early Decision or Regular Decision deadline for your intake year.
- Attend an interview if shortlisted. The format and stage vary by college.
- Receive your admission decision together with your automatically assigned scholarship tier. There is no separate scholarship award letter.
- Confirm enrollment and submit the required deposit and paperwork by the deadline in your offer letter.
Why the November Early Decision round is worth chasing
The cycle runs roughly like this for an August intake, though every date below is typical rather than fixed:
| Stage | Typical timing |
|---|---|
| Applications open | Autumn, typically September-October |
| Early Decision deadline (non-binding, reviewed first) | Typically November |
| Regular Decision deadline | Typically February-March |
| Admission and scholarship decisions | Rolling, 4-8 weeks after each round closes |
| Enrollment confirmation | Per offer letter, usually within 2-4 weeks of the decision |
Exact dates change by year, so confirm the current round deadlines on the official portal. Apply Early Decision where you can: cohorts are smaller and your profile is evaluated against a less crowded pool. Since Early Decision is described as non-binding, there is little downside for a well-prepared student.
The practical problem for Pakistani students is the calendar. A November deadline means your SAT and IELTS need to be done by early autumn, while many FSc students are still in their final year. If you want to apply early, book those tests in the summer.
What moves you from the 35-70% range to 80-100%
A strong SAT or ACT score is the single biggest lever. It meaningfully improves your chances of landing in the 80-100% tiers rather than the 35-70% range. If your program treats the test as optional, a good score can still help you, so think carefully before skipping it.
Beyond scores, a few things applicants often get wrong:
- Writing a generic "I want to study abroad" essay. VinUni values applicants who see the degree as more than a stepping stone, so show real intent to build a career connected to Vietnam or the wider Southeast Asian region.
- Choosing recommenders who only know your grades. Both academics and leadership or extracurricular work count toward your tier, so ask teachers who can speak to both.
- Underselling science achievements on the pre-med track. If you are applying to Health Sciences, mention any biology or chemistry olympiad or research experience explicitly.
- Accepting a 100% tuition offer without a budget for rent, food, visa fees and flights.
Once you have an offer, the visa stage still needs attention. Our guide to bank statements and proof of funds covers how to show you can meet the costs the scholarship leaves uncovered. If you are comparing other options in the same country, browse all Vietnam scholarships.
