Most Pakistani students never consider Tunisia, and that is partly the point of this guide. South Mediterranean University (SMU) in Tunis is a private university that teaches in English, and its SMU Foundation runs three tuition scholarships for students joining its business school and its technology institute. One of those tracks, the Diversity Scholarship, is written specifically for international candidates from emerging countries. If you want an English-medium business or engineering degree and the usual destinations feel out of reach on cost, SMU deserves a look. You can see the full scholarship details on our scholarship listing.

Be clear about one thing from the start. These awards reduce tuition. They do not pay you a stipend, and they do not cover rent, flights or your visa. For many Pakistani families that makes this a partial-funding option, and you should plan for it that way.

Three tracks run by one foundation

SMU is built around two main schools: the Mediterranean School of Business (MSB) and the Mediterranean Institute of Technology (MedTech). There is also a hospitality school and a language institute, but the scholarships are for Bachelor's, Engineering and Master's applicants to MSB or MedTech. SMU describes itself as Tunisia's first English-speaking educational hub. It holds AACSB and AMBA accreditation on the business side and ABET and ASIIN on the engineering side, and it enrolls students from more than 35 nationalities.

How much tuition each track can cut

The three tracks reward different things, and the percentages are very different.

  • The Excellence Scholarship is merit-based. It reduces tuition by anywhere from 25% to 100%. Undergraduate applicants need a "Mention Bien" or equivalent at baccalaureate level, and graduate applicants need strong transcripts from their previous degree. Evidence of leadership or extracurricular work is weighed on top of grades.
  • The Equality Scholarship is need-based. It is for high-potential students who can document genuine financial need, and in strong cases it can cover up to 100% of tuition.
  • The Diversity Scholarship is for international candidates from emerging countries. It reduces tuition by up to 30%, and the award is based on nationality and SMU's aim of building a mixed, international campus.

Here is the honest read. The Diversity track is the one most clearly designed for someone like a Pakistani applicant with no prior connection to Tunisia, but it is also the smallest award. Even the maximum Diversity award leaves most of the tuition bill with you. The big reductions sit in Excellence and Equality, and the committee decides the percentage case by case. Nobody should assume they will land at the top of either range.

None of the three tracks requires Tunisian citizenship. All three use a shared online application form, and applicants are generally free to apply to more than one track and let the review committee decide which fits best. If you have strong grades and real financial need, it makes sense to put the evidence for both in front of them.

Whether a Pakistani applicant qualifies

Excellence and Equality are open to non-Tunisian applicants. The Diversity track is for nationals of "eligible emerging countries", and SMU's published information does not list those countries by name. Before you build your application around the Diversity award, check with the SMU Foundation that your nationality is on their eligible list.

The full set of requirements looks like this:

  • Admission to, or a concurrent application for, a Bachelor's, Engineering or Master's program at MSB or MedTech.
  • For Excellence, strong academic transcripts (Mention Bien or equivalent at baccalaureate level, or strong prior-degree transcripts for graduate applicants).
  • For Equality, documented financial need alongside academic potential.
  • For Diversity, nationality of an eligible emerging country.
  • A complete SMU application file. The scholarship is assessed alongside the standard admissions file, not instead of it.
  • English good enough for English-medium teaching. No centralized language-test cutoff is published, and English is assessed as part of admission.

"Mention Bien" is a baccalaureate grading term, and SMU accepts an equivalent, but its published information gives no conversion for Pakistani Intermediate or A-level results. Ask the admissions office how they read your grades rather than guessing.

The paperwork, including a motivational video

The document list is short, but one item catches people off guard.

  1. Completed SMU online application form
  2. National ID or passport copy
  3. Birth certificate
  4. Academic transcripts from the last two years of study
  5. CV in English, using SMU's template where one is provided
  6. Motivational video or statement in English
  7. Official baccalaureate transcripts for undergraduates, or prepa/license transcripts for graduate and engineering applicants
  8. Statement of financial need (Equality track only)

The motivational video is the one to take seriously. It is a required document and reviewers weigh it heavily. Record it in clear English, keep it focused on why you want this program and this campus, and watch it back before you submit. A shaky, rushed video with poor sound will hurt you more than an average transcript.

Applying for admission and the scholarship together

This is a private-university award, not a government scholarship. There is no embassy nomination and no HEC-style process. You deal directly with SMU's admissions office and the Foundation.

  1. Apply for admission to your chosen MSB or MedTech program through the SMU application portal.
  2. Decide which track fits your profile. If you are applying from an emerging country, say clearly that you want to be considered for the Diversity track.
  3. Submit the scholarship application with your transcripts, CV, motivational video and, for Equality, the financial-need statement. Details are on the SMU Foundation scholarships page.
  4. Reply quickly if the Foundation or admissions office asks for clarification or an interview.
  5. Wait for the decision, which arrives alongside or shortly after the admissions decision.

Why "rolling" does not mean "whenever"

Admissions applications typically open in the autumn or winter before a September intake, but the exact date varies by year. Scholarship applications are submitted at the same time as the admissions application and reviewed on a rolling basis as they come in. Decisions follow alongside or shortly after the admissions decision.

Rolling review rewards people who apply early. A late file may still be considered, but the Foundation's budget is not unlimited, and you do not want to be the applicant reviewed after most awards have gone. Email the Foundation at fondation@smu.tn to confirm the deadline for your intended intake before you assume there is plenty of time. Then work backwards, because your visa and travel still have to be arranged after the offer arrives.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

SMU fits a student who wants an English-taught business, engineering or computer science degree with recognized accreditation, lower costs than comparable programs in Europe or the Gulf, and a small campus rather than a large public university. Students who do not speak French or Arabic benefit most, because English-medium options in Tunisia are rare.

It is a poor fit if you need a fully funded package with living costs. Even a 100% tuition award leaves rent, food, travel and visa costs to you. If your family cannot cover those, you will struggle, and a wider search of scholarships for Pakistani students may turn up better-funded options. It is also worth knowing that Tunisia is not a common destination for Pakistani students, so you will find fewer seniors to ask for advice.

Mistakes that cost applicants money

The most common error is waiting for an admission offer before starting the scholarship file. Do both at once. The scholarship is assessed alongside admission, and a late scholarship file in a rolling process is a weaker file.

The second is sending thin evidence. Because Excellence ranges from 25% to 100% and Equality goes up to 100%, the committee sets the percentage based on what you show them. Attach every certificate, award, leadership role and piece of financial documentation you have.

The third, for Diversity applicants, is writing a generic statement. Be explicit about your country of origin and what studying in a mixed international cohort means to you. That is literally what the track is judging.

Finally, do not plan your budget around the best possible outcome. Plan around the smallest award you could realistically get and treat anything more as a bonus.

Frequently asked questions

Can Pakistani students apply for SMU Foundation scholarships?

None of the three tracks requires Tunisian citizenship, so international students can apply to Excellence and Equality. The Diversity track is limited to eligible emerging countries, so confirm with the Foundation that Pakistan is on that list.

Does the scholarship cover living costs?

No. All three tracks reduce tuition only. Living costs, visas and travel are the student's responsibility.

Is this a Tunisian government scholarship?

No. It is a private-university scholarship run by the SMU Foundation for students admitted to South Mediterranean University.

Can I apply to more than one track?

Generally yes. The tracks share one online application form, and the review committee can decide which track suits you best.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL?

SMU does not publish a centralized language-test cutoff. Your English is assessed as part of admission, so ask admissions what evidence they want from you.

When is the deadline?

There is no fixed annual date. Applications follow SMU's rolling admissions cycle for the September intake, so confirm the current dates directly with the SMU Foundation.

Check the current cycle on the official South Mediterranean University website, and keep the SMU Foundation Scholarships page handy for the summary details.
