Schwarzman Scholars is a fully funded, one-year master's program in global affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing. It is small, selective and built around a single idea: put young people who are likely to lead in business, government or civil society in one room for a year and have them study China's role in the world together. You can read the full scholarship details on our listing, but this guide goes further into what the program expects and where applicants usually lose marks.
Be clear about one thing before you start. This is a leadership program first and an academic degree second. If you want a research master's that leads into a PhD, or a technical degree in your engineering specialty, this is probably the wrong fit even though engineers and scientists are welcome to apply. If you have a record of actually leading things and you want a year that puts you in front of policy makers, innovators and senior academics, read on.

A one-year degree built around China and leadership
The academic core is the Master of Global Affairs. The curriculum covers leadership, international relations, public policy, economics and business, and it is taught in English. You do not need any prior study of Chinese to apply.
What makes the year different is everything around the classroom. Scholars take part in leadership experiences, in-country study tours, guest lectures from prominent global figures and networking with academics, innovators and policy makers. If you treat it as a normal taught master's and spend the year only on coursework, you miss most of what the program is designed to give you.
The class is deliberately balanced by region. Roughly 40 percent of each cohort comes from the United States, about 20 percent from China and around 40 percent from the rest of the world. For a Pakistani applicant, that last group is where you compete, alongside candidates from every other country outside those two. Pakistan is not named in the published eligibility rules, so confirm on the official Schwarzman Scholars website that your nationality is eligible for the global cycle before you invest weeks in essays.
Eligible fields are broad: global affairs, public policy, international relations, economics, business, humanities, sciences and engineering. Your undergraduate subject matters less than what you have done with it.
What full funding means in practice
Full funding here is genuinely full. The package includes:
- A full tuition fee waiver
- Room and board
- Travel to and from Beijing at the start and end of the academic year
- In-country study tours
- Required course books and supplies
- A Lenovo laptop
- Health insurance
- A personal living stipend
The stipend amount is not published in the summary details, so check the current figure on the official site rather than relying on numbers passed around in forums. The practical point for a Pakistani family is that housing, flights, insurance and books are handled, so the year in Beijing should not require you to fund living costs out of pocket the way a partial scholarship would.
The one cost the package does not obviously cover is getting to your interview. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed in person, and the interviews are listed as taking place in London and New York. Think about how you would travel there, and how long a visa for the UK or US would take, before you are shortlisted rather than after.
The age cut-off and degree date that decide eligibility
Two dates rule you in or out, and both are tied to August 1, 2027:
- You must hold an undergraduate degree by that date. Final-year students can apply if they will graduate in time.
- You must be at least 18 but not yet 29 on that date. If your 29th birthday falls on or before August 1, 2027, you are out for this cycle.
The other requirements are a strong level of English (shown through a standardized test if English is not your native language), three letters of recommendation and a completed online application in English submitted before the deadline.
On English: Pakistani applicants often assume an English-medium degree is enough. The requirement is framed around native language, and accepted tests listed are TOEFL iBT, IELTS, Cambridge or Duolingo. Unless the official site tells you otherwise for your case, plan on sitting one of them.
Eight things to upload, and the word limits that trip people up
- The online application form, completed in English
- Scanned transcripts for your undergraduate degree, and graduate degree if you have one
- A resume or CV of no more than two pages
- A biographical profile of up to 100 words
- Two essays: a Leadership Essay of up to 750 words and a Statement of Purpose of up to 500 words
- Two short answers of 100 words each
- Three letters of recommendation
- English test scores (TOEFL iBT, IELTS, Cambridge or Duolingo), if applicable
The word limits are strict, and footnotes, headers and titles all count toward them. A 750-word essay with a title and two footnotes is no longer a 750-word essay. Count the whole thing.
If your transcripts are in Urdu or any language other than English, include accurate and complete translations alongside the originals. Pakistani university transcripts are usually in English already, but certificates from some boards and institutions are not. For a general list of what international programs tend to ask for, see our documents checklist for international scholarships.
Choosing your three recommenders
The letters are not interchangeable. At least one must be academic, and at least one must address your leadership abilities. A common mistake is to collect three letters from professors who all say you topped the class. That covers the academic requirement and leaves the leadership question unanswered. Pick someone who watched you lead: a supervisor, the head of an organization you built something in, or a mentor from a project you ran.
How the online application works
- Create an account on the Schwarzman Scholars application portal. You receive a temporary PIN.
- Fill in the biographical, educational, professional and essay sections in English.
- Register your three recommenders in the portal. They get a submission link automatically.
- Upload your transcripts, resume and any required test scores.
- Review every warning and error the portal shows, then submit before the deadline.
- If shortlisted, attend an in-person interview.
Register your recommenders early. The portal emails them only once you enter their details, and the deadline is strict. A professor who receives the link a week before the deadline, during exam season, is a risk you do not need to take.
The 2026 cycle, from portal opening to Beijing
The U.S. and Global application cycle opened on April 8, 2026, and the deadline is September 9, 2026, at 3 p.m. EDT. That is late evening or night in Pakistan, so do not leave submission to the final day and then miscalculate the time difference. Interview notifications are expected in mid-October 2026, with in-person interviews in October and November 2026. The program starts in August 2027 with orientation in Beijing.
Dates like these shift between cycles. If you are reading this after the September deadline, use the time to prepare for the next intake and confirm the new dates on the official portal once they are published.
What separates strong applications from the rest
Most rejected applications are not weak on grades. They are weak on evidence of leadership. The program asks for specific, long-term examples, and the usual fillers do not count for much: routine tasks at work, a group assignment you coordinated, or a hard moment during a trip abroad. What does count is something you started or ran over time, where you can show what changed because of you.
For many Pakistani applicants, the strongest material is sitting outside their CV: a tutoring network built in your neighbourhood, a society you grew from a handful of members, a family business process you fixed, a relief effort you organized. Write about one of these in detail rather than listing five.
Your Statement of Purpose needs a reason for China specifically. "I want an international degree" is not a reason. Connect what you want to do later to why understanding China matters for it.
The interview is a fast 25-minute panel. Expect questions on anything you wrote in the application and on current global events. Read the news daily for the weeks before, including coverage of China and of Pakistan's relations with it, and be ready to hold an opinion and defend it.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know Mandarin?
No. Prior study of Chinese is not required, and all teaching is in English. You do need to show strong English proficiency.
Is there an application fee?
No. Applying to Schwarzman Scholars is free.
What is the age limit?
You must be at least 18 but not yet 29 on August 1 of your enrollment year. For the class starting in August 2027, that date is August 1, 2027.
Can Pakistani students apply?
The program recruits a global cohort, with about 40 percent from outside the United States and China. Pakistan is not named specifically in the eligibility rules, so check the eligibility rules for your nationality on the official website before applying.
I studied engineering. Is this worth applying for?
Engineering and the sciences are among the eligible fields. Just remember the degree is in global affairs, so your application has to explain why someone with your background wants a year focused on policy, leadership and China.
Where are interviews held?
Interviews are in person and are listed as taking place in London and New York. Plan for travel and possible visa time if you are shortlisted.
