Royal University for Women (RUW) is a private, women-only university in Riffa, Bahrain. It runs two kinds of fee help that matter to Pakistani applicants: a merit-based partial scholarship on tuition, and a standing tuition discount for international students. Neither one pays your rent, your airfare or your visa fees. What they do is cut the tuition bill, and for a Pakistani woman who was already planning a self-funded or family-funded degree in the Gulf, that cut can be meaningful.

This guide explains how each route works, what you need to qualify, and where applicants tend to trip up. For the summary version, see the full scholarship details.

Two separate routes to lower fees at RUW

Most people read "RUW scholarship" and imagine one award. It is really two things layered together.

The first is the merit scholarship. If you meet the academic threshold, RUW's scholarship committee looks at your file and decides on a percentage reduction for you individually. There is no published fixed amount. Meeting the grade cut-off does not guarantee anything, because the committee also weighs the request letter and the financial-need explanation you send with your application.

The second is the international student discount. This is not a competition. If you are an international student living outside Bahrain and the GCC, which describes most Pakistani applicants applying from home, you get 20% off tuition fees. International students already resident in Bahrain or another GCC country get 15%. The discount continues each semester as long as you stay in good academic standing.

For most Pakistani applicants, the discount is the dependable part and the merit scholarship is the bonus you try for. Plan your budget around the 20%, not around a merit award you have not been offered yet.

The fee reductions RUW offers, and what they leave out

Here is the full set of reductions RUW lists:

  • Merit scholarship: a partial tuition reduction, with the percentage set by the scholarship committee case by case.
  • International discount of 15% on tuition for students resident in Bahrain or GCC countries.
  • International discount of 20% on tuition for students resident outside Bahrain and the GCC.
  • A 50% discount on first-semester tuition for students transferring from another university, local or international.
  • A sibling discount: 10% off for a second sister enrolling, and 15% off from a third sister onward.

The transfer and sibling discounts do not need a separate application beyond your normal admission file. They are confirmed and processed through the Office of the Registrar, not a separate scholarship office.

Every one of these applies to tuition fees only. Living costs, accommodation, health insurance, visa fees and airfare are all on you. If your family is counting on this to make Bahrain "free", it will not. It makes Bahrain cheaper.

One open question is stacking. RUW mentions that some discounts can stack (a transfer discount followed later by the international discount is one example), but its published policy does not clearly say whether the merit scholarship and the international discount can be combined. Ask Admissions directly and get the answer in writing before you enrol.

Grades that put you in front of the committee

For the merit scholarship, the academic bar is:

  • Undergraduate applicants: a high school average of 85% or above.
  • Postgraduate applicants: a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher.

If you apply to a College of Business & Law programme, you also need at least a 60% average in Grade 12 mathematics subjects.

For the international discount, you need a non-Bahraini nationality and must be applying as a self-funded international student. Pakistani nationals qualify for the 20% tier when applying from Pakistan, and they can also be considered for the merit scholarship if they meet the thresholds above.

The other standard conditions apply to everyone:

  • Completed secondary education (or equivalent), with certificates attested by the Bahrain Ministry of Education or through the relevant overseas attestation chain.
  • Proof of English proficiency through an internationally recognized test, at the level your programme requires.
  • Completion of RUW's standard admission process, plus a request letter on your financial circumstances if you want merit-scholarship consideration.
  • Good academic standing every semester to keep any discount or scholarship percentage.

RUW is a women-only university, so this is an option for female students only. If you are a woman with strong grades who wants an English-medium degree in the Gulf at lower cost than the UK, US, UAE or Qatar, it is worth a serious look. If you need full funding to study at all, this is the wrong scholarship, and you should spend your effort elsewhere.

Attestation is the slow part of the file

RUW asks for these documents:

  1. A completed online application through RUW's Self-Service Admissions portal.
  2. Attested secondary school certificate and transcripts.
  3. An English proficiency test score (for example IELTS or TOEFL, or an RUW-recognized equivalent).
  4. A valid passport copy.
  5. Passport-size photographs.
  6. A request or motivation letter explaining your financial situation, for merit-scholarship consideration.
  7. Any programme-specific requirements, such as an interview, portfolio or other documents the college asks for.

The attestation item is where Pakistani applicants lose time. The chain for Pakistani certificates runs through HEC/IBCC, then the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then the Bahrain Embassy. RUW stresses this step repeatedly, and attestation can take weeks. Start it before you even open the application form. Our IBCC and MOFA attestation guide walks through the Pakistani side of the process.

Applying through the PowerCampus portal

  1. Pick your programme and check its entry requirements on the RUW admission requirements page.
  2. Submit your application on the RUW PowerCampus Self-Service Admissions portal, with your attested academic documents and English test scores.
  3. If you want the merit scholarship, attach a request letter to the Office of the Registrar explaining your financial circumstances, alongside the standard admission file.
  4. Wait for the scholarship committee. It reviews merit requests one by one and sends its decision through the Office of the Registrar.
  5. Once accepted, confirm your nationality and residency status with Admissions so the correct international discount (15% or 20%) is applied to your fee structure.
  6. Pay the registration fees to confirm enrolment, then move to visa processing through RUW's Human Resources office before the semester starts.

RUW provides visa sponsorship support for accepted international students through its HR office. You still need your own finances in order for the visa stage, so keep your family's bank documents ready. Our guide to bank statements and proof of funds covers what Pakistani families usually need to prepare.

Why applying early helps with a rolling deadline

There is no single fixed deadline. Applications are processed on a rolling basis ahead of each Fall and Spring intake, and the exact cut-off for the current cycle should be confirmed with RUW Admissions or on its deadlines page. The rough sequence looks like this:

  • Ahead of each intake, the application window opens.
  • Before the deadline, you submit documents, with attestation done in advance.
  • Once your admission file is complete, the committee reviews any merit request.
  • After the admission decision, the international discount tier is applied when fees are confirmed.
  • Before the semester starts, visa processing and enrolment happen through RUW Human Resources.

The merit pool is reviewed case by case on a first-come basis rather than in one competitive round. In practice that means a strong applicant who applies late in the cycle may be at a disadvantage compared with a similar applicant who applied early. If the merit award matters to you, aim for the start of the window.

Where applicants usually go wrong

Writing a generic cover letter. The committee explicitly weighs your financial-circumstances letter alongside your grades. A polished paragraph about your passion for business does not help. A specific, honest account of your family's situation and what you can and cannot pay does.

Assuming the discount tier. The difference between 15% and 20% depends on where you are resident, not just your passport. If you are a Pakistani living in, say, a GCC country, you may fall in the 15% tier. Confirm in writing which tier applies to you before you commit.

Assuming everything stacks. Ask whether the merit scholarship and the international discount can be combined. Do not build your budget on both until RUW confirms it.

Forgetting non-tuition costs. Visa, accommodation, health insurance and airfare all sit outside every RUW discount. Budget for them separately from day one.

Booking around a guessed deadline. Contact RUW Admissions at info@ruw.edu.bh or +973 17764444 to confirm the current intake deadline before you lock in attestation appointments or travel.

Frequently asked questions

Can Pakistani students get the RUW international discount?

Yes. Pakistani nationals applying from outside Bahrain and the GCC fall in the 20% international discount tier, and they can also be considered for the separate merit scholarship if they meet the grade thresholds.

Is the RUW scholarship fully funded?

No. All of RUW's awards are partial reductions on tuition fees. They do not cover living costs, accommodation, visa fees or airfare.

What marks do I need for the merit scholarship?

Undergraduate applicants generally need a high school average of 85% or above. Postgraduate applicants need a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher. Meeting the threshold puts you in consideration but does not guarantee an award.

Do I need a separate application for the discounts?

The international, transfer and sibling discounts do not need a separate application beyond the standard admission file; they are handled through the Office of the Registrar. The merit scholarship needs a request letter on your financial circumstances submitted with your file.

Can I combine the merit scholarship with the 20% discount?

RUW's published policy does not clearly say. Ask RUW Admissions directly and get confirmation before enrolling.

How long do the discounts last?

The international discount, and any merit percentage you are awarded, continue each semester as long as you remain in good academic standing.

Before you apply, check the current intake dates and policies on the RUW scholarship page and the RUW international students page, and keep our RUW scholarship summary handy for the key numbers.
