The Yenching Academy of Peking University runs a fully funded Master's program in China Studies. It is small, selective and interdisciplinary: around 120 new students a year study China through the humanities and social sciences, live together on campus, and build their own course plan with academic mentors. If you are a Pakistani graduate who wants to understand China seriously (its history, politics, economy, society or its role in the world), this is one of the most direct routes into that kind of study. Keep the full scholarship details open alongside this guide.
It is worth being clear about who this suits. Yenching is a program about China, taught in English, for people with academic ability and a record of leadership or community work. It is a poor fit if you want a technical degree, an MBBS route, or a Chinese-language-medium program. Applicants who treat it as a generic free master's in China tend to write weak statements, and the selection process is built to catch that.

What the full fellowship actually pays for
Yenching Scholars receive a full fellowship. According to the program information, it covers:
- Tuition fees in full
- On-campus accommodation
- A monthly living stipend
- One round-trip travel fare
- Field study costs
The exact stipend amount is not stated in the information we have, so check the current figure on the official Yenching Academy website before you plan your budget. Note that only one round-trip fare is included. If you plan to fly home to Pakistan between semesters, those extra trips are on you.
The field studies matter more than they look. They are organized by the Academy and partly designed by scholars themselves, and they are a large part of what makes this program different from sitting in lectures. Having those costs covered means you can take part fully.
How the program is structured
The Master's is interdisciplinary. Instead of a fixed syllabus, you work with academic mentors and choose courses from six research areas within the broad fields of the humanities and social sciences. On top of coursework there are extracurricular activities and field studies.
The cohort mixes students from the Chinese Mainland with students from abroad. International students make up roughly 75% of the student body, so you will be studying with people from many countries, plus Chinese classmates who bring a local perspective.
One rule catches people out: Peking University does not allow students to be enrolled in other degree programs while studying there. If you are midway through another master's or planning to run two degrees in parallel, you will need to sort that out first.
Eligibility for Pakistani applicants
The program is open to international applicants who hold non-Chinese citizenship and a valid passport, so Pakistani citizens can apply. The requirements are:
- At least a Bachelor's degree in any field, or current enrollment in a Bachelor's program with expected graduation by August of the intended enrollment year
- An outstanding academic record
- A strong interest in the interdisciplinary study of China
- A record of extracurricular achievement, community engagement, social responsibility and leadership potential
- English proficiency meeting the minimum test score requirements
"Any field" is real. An engineering or medical graduate can apply. But your statements then have to explain convincingly why China Studies, and why now. Final-year students in Pakistan should check their expected result date carefully, since you need to graduate by August of the year you would enroll.
English test scores and the rules that trip people up
The accepted tests and minimum overall scores listed are:
| Test | Minimum overall |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 7.0 |
| TOEFL iBT | 100 |
| Cambridge English Scale (Advanced) | 185 |
| CET 6 | 600 |
| TEM 4 | Pass level of ่ฏๅฅฝ or above |
Native English speakers and graduates of English-taught degree programs are listed as exempt. Many Pakistani universities teach in English, but do not assume the exemption applies to you. Confirm on the official site what proof they accept before you skip the test.
Three details are easy to miss. Your test must have been taken after September 1, 2025, because older scores are not accepted. Several formats are excluded: TOEFL MyBest Scores, TOEFL iBT Home Edition, IELTS Indicator, IELTS Online and IELTS One Skill Retake. And when you book IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge, choose Yenching Academy of Peking University as a designated score recipient so official scores go directly to them.
The eight documents and what each one is for
- The completed online application form
- A personal statement of 750 words or less
- A Statement of Research Interest of up to 1500 words, excluding citations
- A Curriculum Vitae
- Official transcript
- Diploma, or a Certificate of Enrollment if you have not yet graduated
- Two academic letters of recommendation from full professors or associate professors in your intended field of study
- An English proficiency test report (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge English Scale, CET 6 or TEM 4)
All materials must be in English. If your transcript or degree is issued only in Urdu, arrange official English versions early. For general preparation, our documents checklist for international scholarships covers how to get transcripts and certificates ready.
The recommendation letter rule is stricter than usual
Most scholarships accept letters from any lecturer who taught you. Yenching asks for full or associate professors in your intended field. In many Pakistani departments, most of your teachers will be lecturers or assistant professors, so you may need to approach someone more senior, or someone in a related humanities or social sciences department. Start these conversations in September, not in the last week of November.
Personal statement versus research statement
These two documents do different jobs. The personal statement (750 words or less) is about you: your leadership, your community work, and why this program fits your path. The Statement of Research Interest (up to 1500 words) is about a question you want to explore regarding China. Applicants often blur the two and repeat themselves. Keep the research statement focused on a specific topic, show what you have already read, and connect it to the six research areas the Academy offers.
Applying through the portal before November 30
- Check whether your university is a Yenching partner or cooperating university. Students and alumni of Partner Universities must go through their home university's internal pre-selection process before applying to the Academy, and that internal process will close before the main deadline.
- Create an account on the Yenching Academy admissions portal through the official website.
- Prepare all materials in English: transcripts, statements, CV and recommendation letters.
- Make sure official English test scores are sent directly to the Yenching Academy using the designated institution code where applicable.
- Submit the online form and all materials through the portal by November 30, 2026, 9:00 am Beijing time.
Candidates from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan have an extra step (a supplementary application on the Peking University Graduate Admissions website). That does not apply to Pakistani applicants.
Why 9:00 am Beijing time changes your real deadline
The cut-off is November 30, 2026 at 9:00 am Beijing time. Convert that to Pakistan time before you plan anything, because it is a morning cut-off, not an end-of-day one. In practice, aim to submit several days early. Portals get slow near deadlines, and a power cut or internet outage at the wrong moment can cost you the year.
Applications open on September 1, 2026. That gives you about three months, which is less than it sounds once you factor in booking an English test, waiting for results, and chasing two senior professors for letters.
Where strong Pakistani applications go wrong
- Writing about China in vague, flattering terms. The Academy wants a nuanced understanding of China, so show you can think critically and specifically.
- Leaning only on grades. Leadership, community engagement and social responsibility are explicit criteria. Concrete examples from societies, volunteering, or initiatives you started carry real weight.
- Booking an excluded test format, such as IELTS Online or TOEFL Home Edition, and finding out too late.
- Using an English test taken before September 1, 2025.
- Missing a partner university's internal pre-selection because they only looked at the November deadline.
- Asking a lecturer instead of a full or associate professor for a recommendation.
Getting your Pakistani degree and transcripts properly attested early also saves stress later. Our IBCC and MOFA attestation guide explains that process for Pakistani degrees. You can also compare this with other options in all China scholarships we cover.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Yenching Academy fellowship really fully funded?
Yes. It covers tuition fees, on-campus accommodation, a monthly living stipend, one round-trip travel fare and field study costs. The stipend amount should be confirmed on the official website.
Can I apply with a degree in engineering, medicine or business?
Yes. The minimum requirement is a Bachelor's degree in any field. You must show a strong interest in the interdisciplinary study of China, so your statements need to explain the connection clearly.
Can I apply in my final year of university?
Yes, if you are enrolled in a Bachelor's program and expect to graduate by August of the intended enrollment year. You would submit a Certificate of Enrollment in place of a diploma.
Do I need IELTS if my degree was taught in English?
Graduates of English-taught degree programs are listed as exempt. Check the official site for what evidence you need to provide, because a Pakistani degree being taught in English is not always documented in a way admissions offices accept automatically.
Which cohort does the November 30, 2026 deadline apply to?
It is the deadline for the 2027 cohort, for international candidates as well as applicants from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. It closes at 9:00 am Beijing time.
Can I study another degree at the same time?
No. Peking University does not allow students to be enrolled in other degree programs while studying at the university.
Before you start, read the current requirements on the Yenching Academy official website, and keep the Peking University Yenching Academy Scholarship page handy for the key dates.
