Most scholarships make you win twice: once to get admitted and again to get funded. MBZUAI, the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in Abu Dhabi, skips the second round. Every full-time student admitted to a funded MSc or PhD program receives the full scholarship automatically. There is no separate scholarship form, no extra essay and no second committee. If you get in, you are funded.

That makes this one of the cleanest options for a Pakistani student with a strong computer science, engineering or maths background who wants to do graduate work in AI. It also means the whole fight is the admission itself, and that is where you should spend your energy. You can see the full scholarship details on our listing, and this guide walks through what the funding looks like, who has a real shot, and what to get right in the application.

A graduate university built only for AI

MBZUAI was established in 2019 in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi. It teaches only at graduate level and only in artificial intelligence and related computational fields: machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, robotics and similar areas. The Abu Dhabi government backed it to make the UAE a hub for AI research, and the university has recruited faculty from computer science departments around the world. Teaching is entirely in English.

Because the university is young and research-first, classes are small and the student-to-faculty ratio is low. In practice that means you are likely to work closely with a supervisor from your first semester rather than sitting in a crowded lecture hall for a year before anyone knows your name.

Who should skip it? If you want a broad computer science degree with lots of software engineering or business electives, or you have no interest in research, this is probably the wrong fit. MBZUAI is narrow by design.

What AED 15,500 a month actually gets you

The package has five parts:

  • A 100% tuition waiver.
  • A monthly stipend of approximately AED 15,500 for MSc students and approximately AED 17,500 for PhD students.
  • UAE residence visa sponsorship for international students.
  • Comprehensive health insurance.
  • Access to on-campus housing, which is not free. If you take it, the cost is deducted from your stipend.

The stipend is the headline. It is one of the highest monthly stipends offered by any graduate AI program. But read the housing line carefully. The stipend is your living money, and if you live on campus a share of it goes straight back to the university as rent. Budget with the net figure in mind, not the gross one. The stipend amounts are also described as approximate, so check the current figures in your offer letter rather than planning around a fixed number.

For most Pakistani students the visa sponsorship and health insurance matter almost as much as the money. You are not paying for a residence visa yourself, and you are not buying private cover in a country where healthcare is expensive.

The one program the automatic scholarship does not cover

This is the mistake that can cost an applicant a lot. The MSc in Artificial Intelligence (MAAI) professional program is excluded from the automatic full scholarship. The funding applies to full-time students admitted to a funded MSc or PhD program, and MAAI is not one of those.

The names are similar enough that people mix them up. Before you submit, check exactly which program track you are applying to on the MBZUAI admissions page. If funding is the reason you are applying, make sure the program you pick is a funded one.

Whether your degree and GPA are strong enough

Pakistani students are a clear target group here. The university sponsors residence visas for non-UAE nationals, and the requirements are academic rather than nationality based. Here is what MBZUAI asks for:

  • A four-year bachelor's degree (or a recognized equivalent) in a STEM field such as computer science, engineering, mathematics or physics, for MSc applicants.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 out of 4.0, or equivalent.
  • A strong quantitative and programming background.
  • English proficiency test scores if the medium of your previous instruction was not English.
  • For PhD applicants, a research statement showing fit with an MBZUAI faculty member's research area.

A few points for Pakistani applicants specifically. A computer science degree is preferred but not strictly required. Electrical engineering, mathematics or physics graduates can apply, but you need to show you can code and handle the maths. If your transcript is light on programming, your CV and statement have to make up for it.

The 3.2 GPA floor is a minimum, not a target. If you are close to it, MBZUAI's own advice is to strengthen the application with project portfolios, GitHub repositories or publications. A well-documented GitHub repository with real machine learning work will say more about you than a paragraph claiming you are passionate about AI.

On English: the requirement applies where your prior instruction was not in English. Many Pakistani universities teach in English, but do not assume you are exempt. Check what the admissions team accepts as proof, and if in doubt, take the test.

Seven documents, and the two that decide most applications

  1. The completed online application at apply.mbzuai.ac.ae.
  2. A CV.
  3. Official transcripts and degree certificates.
  4. A statement of purpose of 500-1000 words.
  5. A research statement (PhD applicants only).
  6. English proficiency test scores (IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo).
  7. Recommendation letters: two for MSc applicants, three for PhD applicants.

The transcripts and CV are mostly fixed by the time you apply. The statement of purpose and your recommendation letters are where you still have control.

For PhD applicants, the advice is specific: identify a particular MBZUAI faculty member whose research matches yours, and reference their work directly in your statement of purpose. Spend time on the faculty pages before you write a single word. A statement that names a supervisor and explains how your past work connects to theirs reads very differently from one that could have been sent to any university.

For letters, choose academics or supervisors who can speak specifically about your research or technical ability. A letter from a well-known professor who barely remembers you is weaker than a detailed one from the person who supervised your final-year project. Brief your referees early, because they submit through the portal directly and you cannot upload the letters yourself.

If you are still gathering paperwork, our documents checklist for international scholarships covers the general preparation.

How the application moves through the portal

  1. Create an account and submit the online application at apply.mbzuai.ac.ae before the priority or final deadline.
  2. Upload your transcripts, CV, statement of purpose and, for PhD applicants, the research statement.
  3. Arrange for your recommendation letters to be submitted directly through the portal.
  4. Submit English proficiency scores if they are required for you.
  5. Wait for shortlisting. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an interview.

Admission and the scholarship are decided together. There is no separate funding letter that comes later. If you are admitted to a funded program, the funding is part of the offer.

Why the mid-November priority date matters more than the final one

For the Fall 2026 intake, the cycle ran like this:

StageDate
Applications openAugust 2025
Priority review deadlineNovember 15, 2025
Final application deadlineDecember 15, 2025
Decision notificationsMarch 15, 2026 (around mid-March)
Fall semester beginsAugust/September 2026

Those dates belong to a cycle that has now closed. If you are planning ahead, expect a broadly similar pattern, but confirm the exact opening date and deadlines for the next intake on the official MBZUAI website before you plan anything around them.

The practical lesson is the priority deadline. Applying by mid-November gets you the earliest review and the best chance at admission. Treat the final deadline as a fallback, not a plan. For Pakistani students, that means booking your English test, ordering official transcripts and contacting referees in the summer before you apply, not in late autumn.

Where applicants usually go wrong

From what the requirements and tips point to, the common errors are predictable:

  • Applying to the MAAI professional program and assuming it is funded. It is not covered by the automatic scholarship.
  • Writing a generic PhD statement with no named faculty member or research link.
  • Leaning on a GPA near 3.2 without any projects, code or publications to back it up.
  • Picking referees for their titles rather than for what they can say about your technical work.
  • Waiting for the final deadline and missing the priority review.
  • Planning a budget on the full stipend while also taking on-campus housing, which is deducted from it.

Abu Dhabi also has a large South Asian expatriate community, so settling in tends to be easier than in many Western study destinations. Compare it with other options in all United Arab Emirates scholarships.

Frequently asked questions

Is every admitted student funded?

Every full-time student admitted to a funded MSc or PhD program automatically receives the full scholarship. The MSc in Artificial Intelligence (MAAI) professional program is the exception and is excluded.

Do I need a separate scholarship application?

No. Applying for admission to a funded program is the scholarship application. Admission and funding are decided together.

How much is the monthly stipend?

Approximately AED 15,500 for MSc students and approximately AED 17,500 for PhD students. If you live in on-campus housing, the cost is deducted from the stipend.

Can I apply without a computer science degree?

Yes, if you have a strong quantitative and STEM background. Computer science is preferred but not strictly mandatory. Engineering, mathematics and physics graduates are named as eligible for the MSc, though you will need to show solid programming ability.

Which English tests are accepted?

The document list mentions IELTS, TOEFL and Duolingo. Scores are needed where your previous medium of instruction was not English. Check the current minimum scores with admissions.

Will I get an interview?

Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an interview. Not every applicant is interviewed, so treat it as a sign you are being considered seriously.

Before you start, confirm the current deadlines and program list on the official MBZUAI website, and keep the full MBZUAI scholarship page handy as a reference while you prepare.
