Most Pakistani students who look at Thailand start with the big public universities. The Chulabhorn Graduate Scholarship is a different kind of option: a small, fully funded Master's place at Chulabhorn Graduate Institute (CGI) in Bangkok, limited to three science fields and around 15 international students a year. There is no application fee. If you have a science Bachelor's and a respectable CGPA, it deserves a place on your shortlist. You can see the full scholarship details on our listing, and this guide explains what the award actually involves and how to apply without wasting your shot.

A two-year science Master's with a small cohort

CGI funds a two-year Master's in one of three areas: chemical sciences, environmental toxicology or biomedical sciences. That is the whole menu. If your background is in business, engineering, computer science or the social sciences, this scholarship is not for you, and no amount of polishing your application will change that.

For chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy, microbiology, environmental science or related graduates, the picture is better. The institute has royal-family affiliation and a strong reputation in the sciences specifically. With a cohort of around 15 international students, you are not one face in a lecture hall of hundreds, and the source describes this as close academic support. For students who want hands-on supervision rather than a large, anonymous program, that small size is the main attraction.

Who should skip it? Anyone who wants a PhD straight away (more on that below), anyone outside the three fields, and Thai citizens, who are excluded.

What "fully funded" means here, and what is still unconfirmed

The scholarship is described as fully funded. The two items that are clearly stated are:

  • Full tuition for the Master's program
  • A stipend

Accommodation and insurance are described only as likely to be included for the two-year program. Treat that as unconfirmed. Before you accept an offer, ask CGI in writing whether housing and health insurance are covered, and how much the stipend is. The stipend amount is not published in the information we have, so do not build a budget around a number you have seen on a forum.

This matters for a Pakistani student in a practical way. If accommodation is not covered, you will need to plan for rent in Bangkok from your stipend or your own savings, and that can affect your visa paperwork too. Our guide on bank statements and proof of funds explains how to prepare for that side of things.

Open to Pakistanis, with a 2.75 CGPA floor

Eligibility is short. There are two requirements:

  • You can be of any nationality except Thai. Pakistani citizens are eligible.
  • You need a Bachelor's degree with a CGPA of 2.75 out of 4.00 or above.

A 2.75 floor is lower than many fully funded programs. That does not mean scraping past it will get you in. With around 15 seats for applicants from every country except Thailand, the minimum is the point at which your file gets read, not the point at which you win. If your CGPA sits near the cutoff, your recommendation letters and any research or lab experience need to carry more weight.

If your university grades on a percentage or a different scale, check with CGI how they want it reported. Do not convert it yourself and hope for the best.

The six documents CGI asks for

The required list is short, which is a relief after programs that want a dozen items:

  1. Application form
  2. Transcripts
  3. Degree certificate
  4. English proficiency proof
  5. Recommendation letters
  6. Passport copy

A few notes from a Pakistani applicant's point of view. The English proficiency requirement is listed without a specific test or score, so confirm with CGI which tests they accept and what score they expect before you book anything. Recommendation letters should come from science faculty who actually supervised you in a lab or on a project, because a generic letter from a head of department you barely met will not stand out in a cohort this small. And make sure your passport is valid well beyond the program start, since you will need it for the Thai student visa if you are selected.

For transcripts and degrees, many institutions ask for attested copies at some stage. If you have not done HEC and MOFA attestation yet, our attestation guide walks through the process.

Applying through the CGI portal or in person

There are two routes:

  1. Apply online through the CGI scholarship portal at admission.cgi.ac.th.
  2. Submit directly to CGI in Bangkok.

For almost every Pakistani applicant, the online portal is the sensible choice. Direct submission makes sense only if you or someone you trust is already in Bangkok. Either way, no application fee is charged, so do not pay anyone who claims there is a processing charge for this scholarship.

A practical order of work:

  1. Check the current intake and deadline on admission.cgi.ac.th.
  2. Confirm the English proficiency requirement and which field you are applying to.
  3. Ask your referees early, and give them a short summary of the program and your research interest.
  4. Scan transcripts, degree and passport clearly, in colour, as single files per document.
  5. Complete the application form and submit well before the closing date.

Why the deadline is a moving target

CGI does not publish one fixed annual deadline. The application window varies by intake, and the only reliable place to check it is admission.cgi.ac.th. This catches people out. Students see an old date on a social media post, assume it repeats every year, and either miss the real window or apply to a round that has already closed.

Our advice is simple: visit the portal every few weeks once you decide to apply, and note the date for the intake you want as soon as it appears. Leave yourself time after the deadline for visa processing, which our article on student visa rejection reasons covers in more detail. Applications are listed as open at the time of writing, but you should still confirm the current intake on the portal before you start.

Mistakes that cost applicants a seat

Applying outside the three fields is the most common avoidable error. A "related" field that is not chemical sciences, environmental toxicology or biomedical sciences is a risk, so check how your degree maps before investing time.

The second is treating this as a PhD route. The program is primarily at Master's level. If you want a doctorate, confirm directly with CGI whether a doctoral track is currently offered rather than applying to the Master's and hoping to switch.

The third is assuming everything is covered. Tuition and a stipend are stated; accommodation and insurance are only described as likely. Ask before you accept.

The last is a weak research story. In a cohort of around 15, faculty are choosing people they will work with closely for two years. A clear paragraph on what you want to study in your chosen field, and why at CGI, helps more than a long list of extracurriculars.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an application fee for the Chulabhorn Graduate Scholarship?

No. There is no application fee for this scholarship.

Can Pakistani students apply?

Can PhD students apply?

The program is primarily at the Master's level. Confirm directly with CGI whether a doctoral track is currently offered.

What CGPA do I need?

You need a Bachelor's degree with a CGPA of at least 2.75 out of 4.00. Meeting the minimum makes you eligible, but competition for around 15 places means a stronger record helps.

Does the scholarship cover accommodation?

Full tuition and a stipend are covered. Accommodation and insurance are described as likely to be included, so confirm this with CGI before you accept an offer.

When is the deadline?

It varies by intake. Check admission.cgi.ac.th for the exact date of the intake you are applying to.

Before you apply, check the current intake on the Chulabhorn Graduate Institute website and review the full Chulabhorn Graduate Scholarship page for the latest summary.
