The ANSO Scholarship is a fully funded route into Master's and PhD research in China, run by the Alliance of National and International Science Organizations (ANSO), a consortium coordinated through the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). It places international students at one of two universities: the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei, or the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) in Beijing. You can see the full scholarship details on our scholarship page, but this guide is about how to actually win it.

Here is the short version of who it suits. If you are a Pakistani graduate in physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, engineering, life sciences, environmental sciences or materials science, and you want a research degree with a proper stipend, ANSO belongs near the top of your list. If you want MBBS or clinical medicine, skip it. There is no medical pathway here at all.

What the 3,000 and 7,000 CNY stipends mean in practice

The package covers a full tuition waiver, an application fee waiver, comprehensive health insurance, visa and residence permit fees, a one-time international travel allowance (one way, from your home country to China) and a monthly stipend.

The stipend is where ANSO stands apart. Master's students get 3,000 CNY a month, roughly USD 420. PhD students get 6,000-7,000 CNY a month, roughly USD 840-980. That puts it among the highest stipend levels for China-based scholarships. The exact PhD figure within that range is something to confirm in the current call, so do not budget on the top number until you see it in writing.

Two smaller benefits get overlooked. The application fee waiver means applying costs you nothing at the university end. The visa and residence permit fee coverage cuts your first-month expenses in China, which is often when students feel the squeeze before the first stipend arrives. Note that the travel allowance is one way. Plan your own return ticket.

Hefei or Beijing: picking your one university

This is the rule that catches people. You may apply to only one university, USTC or UCAS, in a cycle. Applying to both leads to disqualification. Not a lower ranking. Disqualification.

So the choice matters. USTC is in Hefei, Anhui Province, a fast-growing tech hub where the cost of living is lower than in Beijing or Shanghai. A 3,000 CNY Master's stipend simply goes further there. UCAS is in Beijing, close to government institutions and major research facilities. Both are directly connected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and its national research institutes, and both have international student communities with English-language support.

My advice: do not pick the city first. Pick the supervisor first, then apply to whichever university that person is at. Your whole application rests on fit with a research group, and the university follows from that.

Age cut-offs and other eligibility rules

ANSO is open to non-Chinese citizens, and Pakistani nationals are eligible. The rules that decide most cases are these:

  • Master's applicants need a Bachelor's degree and must be born on or after January 1, 1996.
  • PhD applicants need a Master's degree and must be born on or after January 1, 1991.
  • You must be proficient in English or Chinese. A language test may be required depending on the program.
  • You must meet the international admission requirements of USTC or UCAS.
  • You cannot already be enrolled in a program at the same level in China.
  • You cannot apply to both USTC and UCAS at the same time.

Check the birth date rule before you do anything else. It is a hard line, and no research proposal will get you past it. Beyond the formal rules, expect a strong academic record. First class or distinction is preferred, because both universities draw a very competitive international pool. If your grades are average, you need a sharper proposal and a supervisor who actively wants you.

Why the supervisor email decides so much

Contacting a potential supervisor before you apply is strongly recommended, especially for PhD and research-track Master's programs. A named professor who agrees to work with you significantly improves your chances of both admission and the scholarship. The supervisor acceptance letter is listed among the documents as strongly recommended for research programs.

Start by finding faculty in your area. USTC profiles are at faculty.ustc.edu.cn, and UCAS professors are listed on the individual school pages at www.ucas.ac.cn. Read 2-3 recent papers by professors working in your field. Then write a short, personal email of 3-4 paragraphs and keep it under one page:

  1. Introduce yourself and your research background.
  2. Mention 1-2 specific papers of theirs and what you found interesting in them.
  3. Explain your research interests and how they connect to their work.
  4. Say that you are applying for the ANSO Scholarship and would welcome their supervision.

A common mistake is the mass email: the same paragraph sent to dozens of professors with only the name changed. Professors at Chinese research universities respond to applicants who clearly understand their work. Ten careful emails beat a hundred generic ones. What you want back is a willingness-to-supervise email, and ideally a formal acceptance letter.

The seven documents and where applicants slip

  1. Valid passport
  2. Highest degree certificate and official academic transcripts
  3. Study plan or research proposal
  4. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  5. 2 recommendation or reference letters
  6. Proof of English or Chinese language proficiency
  7. Supervisor acceptance letter (strongly recommended for research programs)

The research proposal is taken very seriously at USTC and UCAS. It should be specific, technically sound and aligned with your supervisor's research area. A proposal written in general terms about "solving energy problems" will not survive review next to applicants who name methods, data and expected results. If you have a supervisor's interest, shape the proposal around their group's current work.

Language proof usually means IELTS, TOEFL or HSK, depending on what your chosen program asks for. For a general view of how to prepare degrees, transcripts and recommendation letters, see our documents checklist for international scholarships.

Applying through the ANSO and university portals

  1. Read the latest ANSO Scholarship call on the official ANSO website.
  2. Decide on one university only, USTC or UCAS.
  3. Contact potential supervisors at that university early and secure a willingness-to-supervise email.
  4. Create an account on the chosen university's portal: USTC application portal or UCAS application portal.
  5. Complete the form, upload all documents and submit before the September deadline.

Because the ANSO call and the university systems can change from year to year, read the current call carefully to see exactly which portal handles your submission. If anything is unclear, the USTC international admissions office and UCAS international admissions are the places to ask.

A realistic calendar from July to arrival

The cycle usually runs like this, though the exact dates move a little each year:

  • July to August: contact supervisors and try to get acceptance.
  • August: the ANSO and university portals typically open.
  • September, 2nd or 3rd week: application deadline. All documents must be in.
  • October to November: the university and ANSO review and shortlist.
  • November to December: accepted students hear from the university.
  • February to March of the following year: visa processing and arrival for the spring semester.

The window between opening and the deadline is short, so treat July and August as your real preparation period. If you wait for the portal to open before writing your proposal or requesting reference letters, you will be rushing. Confirm the opening date and exact deadline for your year on the official portal rather than relying on past cycles.

After admission, Pakistani students apply for the X1 student visa through the Embassy of China in Islamabad, which also handles JW201/JW202 form verification. Once you are in China, the Embassy of Pakistan in Beijing handles consular services, document attestation and passport renewal. Our guide to common student visa rejection reasons is worth reading before your embassy appointment.

Is ANSO the right fit compared with other China options?

ANSO is narrower than most China scholarships. It covers only two universities and only science and research fields, and it expects a serious research profile. In return you get a strong stipend and a research environment tied directly to CAS institutes. If you have a good degree in a science or engineering field and can write a focused proposal, it is one of the best academic routes into China. If you are still unsure about your research direction, or your field falls outside sciences and engineering, compare it with the other options in our guide to all China scholarships.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply to both USTC and UCAS?

No. You must choose one. Applying to both in the same cycle results in automatic disqualification.

Can I study MBBS through ANSO?

No. ANSO is only for Master's and PhD programs in science, engineering and research fields. Clinical medicine is not available.

Do I need the CSCA test for ANSO?

No. The CSCA (China Scholastic Competency Assessment) applies to undergraduate applicants, and ANSO is postgraduate only. You still need to show English or Chinese proficiency through IELTS, TOEFL or HSK as your program requires.

How much is the stipend?

Master's students receive 3,000 CNY a month (about USD 420). PhD students receive 6,000-7,000 CNY a month (about USD 840-980). Confirm the exact amount for your level in the current call.

Is a supervisor letter compulsory?

It is listed as strongly recommended for research programs rather than mandatory. In practice, a named supervisor who has agreed to take you significantly improves your chances, so treat it as close to essential for a PhD.

What is the age limit?

Master's applicants must be born on or after January 1, 1996. PhD applicants must be born on or after January 1, 1991.

Before you apply, check the current call on the official ANSO Scholarship website, and keep the full ANSO scholarship page open for the key details as you prepare.
