WTO Young Professionals Programme (YPP)

Eligibility is targeted rather than universal: candidates must be aged 32 or younger as of the reference date each cycle, and must be nationals of a developing or least-developed WTO member that is under-represented among WTO Secretariat professional staff. This structure means the programme functions partly as a capacity-building and diversity initiative for the multilateral trading system, not a general open competition for any nationality.

Selected participants are placed in divisions across the WTO Secretariat in Geneva, where they contribute directly to the organization's substantive work on trade negotiations, dispute settlement support, trade policy review, and technical cooperation, gaining hands-on experience most early-career professionals could never access without years of prior specialization in trade law or economics.

The programme is genuinely competitive: the most recent cohorts have been selected from applicant pools of several thousand candidates for around ten places per year, reflecting both the appeal of a paid Geneva-based placement at a top multilateral institution and the relatively narrow eligible pool defined by the under-representation criterion.

Compensation is a key feature: participants receive a monthly salary of CHF 4,000, along with appropriate medical coverage and travel costs, financed through members' voluntary contributions to the WTO Global Trust Fund. Pakistan, as a developing WTO member, is a country whose nationals may be eligible depending on the current under-representation assessment for a given cycle - applicants should check the specific year's eligible-country list published with each call for candidates.
