WIPO/ARIPO Master's in Intellectual Property (MIP) Scholarship at Africa University

The MIP is structured in three phases across roughly 12 months: a Distance Learning Phase (approximately three months, delivered online through the WIPO eLearning platform), a Residential Learning Phase (approximately four months of in-person coursework at Africa University's Mutare campus), and a dissertation/research phase completed either on campus or remotely. The curriculum covers patents, trademarks, copyright, industrial designs, geographical indications, IP enforcement, technology transfer, and IP management and policy, taught by a mix of Africa University faculty and visiting WIPO/ARIPO experts and practitioners.

Funding for the scholarship component comes from the Government of Japan through the WIPO Funds-in-Trust (FIT) Japan program, which has long supported human-resource capacity building in intellectual property across developing and least-developed countries. Scholarships awarded through this channel are prioritized for applicants from ARIPO member states and the wider African continent, and typically carry an age cap of 40 years. Applicants who do not secure a scholarship, including qualified international candidates from outside Africa such as Pakistan, may still apply and enroll as self-sponsored (fee-paying) students, in which case the 40-year age limit does not apply and admission is judged purely on academic merit and relevant experience.

Africa University itself is internationally accredited and was established specifically to serve students from across Africa and beyond, with residence halls, a dedicated international students office, and degree programs taught in English.
