Wellcome Sanger Institute 4-Year PhD Programme

Students accepted onto the programme are fully funded regardless of nationality: tuition fees are covered in full, along with a tax-free annual stipend that rises each year of the programme (for the 2026-27 cycle, roughly GBP 25,649 in year one, rising to about GBP 27,385 by year four). International students additionally receive reimbursement for their UK visa costs and the Immigration Health Surcharge, removing two of the largest financial barriers international applicants typically face.

The programme trains around 12 funded PhD students per intake across six scientific programmes spanning cancer genomics, cellular genetics, human genetics, infection genomics, parasites and microbes, and computational/regulatory genomics. Every student is expected to gain exposure to both experimental laboratory work and computational/bioinformatic methods, reflecting the Institute's emphasis on large-scale, data-driven biology - a distinctive feature compared to more narrowly wet-lab or purely computational PhD tracks elsewhere.

Because the Sanger Institute operates its own admissions process independent of a standard university department, the application, interview, and funding decision are all handled directly by the Institute (in partnership with the University of Cambridge, where the PhD degree is formally awarded), giving applicants a single, clearly defined process rather than needing to identify and contact individual supervisors across a decentralized DTP system.
