TWAS-NRF Doctoral Fellowship (South Africa)

South Africa has some of the continent's strongest research infrastructure, including major national facilities in astronomy, biotechnology, and materials science, making it an attractive destination for doctoral researchers who might otherwise lack access to advanced labs and equipment in their home countries. The fellowship is explicitly designed to build South-South scientific collaboration and to strengthen research capacity across the developing world rather than funnel talent permanently toward traditional Western destinations.

Funding is structured as Partial Cost of Study (PCS) support, covering tuition fees and accommodation costs up to a set annual ceiling (historically around R101,196 per year), plus the cheapest available return economy flight and support for visa or study permit costs. Because funding is capped, successful applicants are expected to secure any additional living costs through their host institution, supervisor's research grant, or other complementary funding sources.

Eligibility is restricted to residents of developing countries outside the European Union (South African nationals are not eligible, since the program exists specifically to bring outside talent into South African institutions). Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent in a relevant natural science discipline and must have their qualifications evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) as part of the mandatory application package - applications missing this SAQA evaluation are automatically rejected.

Applications are only accepted through the NRF's online portal during specific call windows, which are announced periodically on the TWAS and NRF websites rather than following a fixed annual calendar. Because timing can shift from cycle to cycle, prospective applicants should monitor both organizations' official pages closely and prepare their SAQA evaluation and academic documents well in advance so they are ready the moment a call opens.
