Princeton University International Financial Aid

Since 2001, Princeton has eliminated loans from its standard financial aid packages entirely. Instead of a mix of grants, work-study, and loans (as is common elsewhere), Princeton replaces the loan component with additional grant aid, meaning students graduate with little to no debt tied to tuition and living costs, even as international students who would otherwise have limited borrowing options in the US.

Aid is calculated using the CSS Profile along with supporting income and asset documentation, adjusted for cost-of-living and currency differences in the applicant's home country. Princeton does not award athletic or merit scholarships; every dollar of institutional aid is tied to demonstrated financial need, assessed individually for each family's circumstances.

For admitted students with financial need, the university covers the full gap between the calculated family contribution and the total cost of attendance, including tuition, room, board, health insurance, books, and even travel costs home for some students. Because Princeton is need-blind internationally, applicants from Pakistan and similar markets are reviewed purely on academic and personal merit.

Princeton's aid office works individually with international families to verify income where formal tax documentation may not exist, using bank statements, employer letters, or other locally appropriate substitutes, making the process more flexible than a rigid one-size-fits-all US-centric model.
