About the OAS-UWI Scholarship Programme

๐Ÿ• 3 min read

The OAS-UWI Scholarship Programme is a long-running partnership between the Organization of American States, the hemispheric body representing 34 countries across North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean, and The University of the West Indies, the region's flagship multi-campus public university. The programme was created to widen access to Caribbean higher education for citizens of OAS member states who might not otherwise be able to afford UWI's international tuition rates, and to strengthen academic ties across the Americas.

2

Scholarships are awarded for study at any of UWI's physical campuses (Cave Hill in Barbados, Mona in Jamaica, St. Augustine in Trinidad and Tobago, Five Islands in Antigua and Barbuda) as well as the UWI Global (online) Campus, which allows recipients to study remotely without relocating. Programmes span a wide range of disciplines, from Early Childhood Development and Family Studies to business, social sciences, and natural sciences, at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level.

3

Unlike a fully-funded scholarship, the OAS-UWI award provides a partial tuition waiver combined with additional allowances, meaning recipients are still expected to cover a portion of their costs and living expenses. This makes it best suited to applicants who already have some funding in place, or to nationals of Caribbean and Latin American OAS member states for whom the discount substantially closes the affordability gap. Pakistani students are not OAS member-state nationals and are not eligible for this specific award, but Pakistani applicants interested in the wider UWI system should note the university does periodically consider limited partial scholarships for other outstanding international applicants through its International Office.

4

Applications are processed centrally through UWI's Graduate Studies and Research office (for postgraduate applicants) using an online application form. Because the scholarship is tied to an existing UWI admission, prospective students must first secure an offer of admission or a status letter from their chosen campus and programme before applying for the OAS-UWI award itself.
