About the NATO Science for Peace and Security Fellowship

πŸ• 4 min read

The NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme promotes dialogue and practical cooperation between NATO member states and partner countries based on scientific research, technological innovation, and knowledge exchange. The SPS Programme offers funding, expert advice, and support to tailor-made, civil security-relevant activities that respond to NATO’s strategic objectives.

2

The Programme supports scientific cooperation through established grant mechanisms that provide funding for Multi-Year Projects and Events. Supported Events include Advanced Research Workshops (ARW), Advanced Study Institutes (ASI), and Advanced Training Courses (ATC). All SPS-funded activities fit within one of these formats and tackle a set of Allied-approved Key Priorities such as counter-terrorism, cyber defence, advanced technologies, energy and environmental security, and CBRNE hazards.

3

Multi-Year Projects (MYP) are Research and Development projects that enable scientists from NATO and its Partner nations to collaborate on applied R&D and capacity building with practical applications in security and defence fields. These projects typically last 24 to 36 months and receive funding between EUR 250,000 and 400,000 over their entire duration, supporting project-specific costs, scientific equipment, software, and training.

4

Advanced Research Workshops (ARW) provide a platform for experts and scientists to share experience and knowledge on security-related topics, running for 2 to 5 working days with 20 to 50 participants and a typical budget of EUR 30,000 to 40,000. Advanced Study Institutes (ASI) are high-level tutorial courses lasting 7 to 10 working days for 60 to 80 pre- and post-doctoral scientists, with an average budget of EUR 60,000. Advanced Training Courses (ATC) are modular courses lasting 5 to 7 working days for 20 to 50 trainees primarily from partner nations, with an average budget of EUR 60,000.

5

Applications for funding must be developed jointly by a NATO country Project Director (NPD) and a Partner country Project Director (PPD). Co-directors must be resident, employed, and affiliated with a government, academic, or other non-profit institution in their respective NATO member or partner countries, as for-profit private companies are not eligible for SPS funding.
