International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University (ITBMU) Foreign Student Scholarship

Despite Myanmar's ongoing political instability since 2021, ITBMU has kept its foreign-student intake running without interruption, coordinating admissions through Myanmar's embassies and consulates abroad rather than requiring applicants to arrive unassisted. The Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture directly sponsors the cost of study for admitted foreign monks, nuns, and laypeople, and also assists with the one-year student visa and its annual extension, which removes one of the biggest practical hurdles for international applicants to a country under travel advisories from many governments.

All instruction is delivered in English across two semesters (roughly June-October and December-March), and coursework covers Pariyatti (scriptural studies), Patipatti (meditation practice), Religions and Missionary Studies, and Foreign Languages and Translation. Students have access to the university's library of more than 31,000 volumes, computer and internet facilities, weekly group meditation practice, and organized excursions to meditation centers and historical Buddhist sites across Myanmar.

This is a niche but genuine and currently verifiable route into Myanmar for students specifically interested in Buddhist studies, comparative religion, or Pali/Theravada scripture -- fields where ITBMU is regarded as one of the most authoritative institutions in Southeast Asia. It is not a general-purpose scholarship for other academic fields, and applicants should have a genuine interest in or existing background in Buddhist studies before applying.
