About the IOC Olympic Solidarity Athlete Scholarship Programme
Olympic Solidarity is the arm of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) dedicated to redistributing a share of Olympic broadcast and marketing revenue to National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and their athletes, with a particular focus on athletes from NOCs with fewer resources. Its individual athlete scholarship programme is one of the most significant sports-specific funding mechanisms in the world, supporting athletes' training, coaching, equipment, accommodation, and competition costs on the road to the Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games.
Ahead of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games, the IOC offered 449 individual scholarships to athletes from 90 different NOCs across six winter sports, and 249 of those scholarship-holders went on to qualify for the Games, representing over half of all scholarship recipients and athletes from 74 NOCs across five continents. A parallel programme runs for every edition of the Summer, Winter, and Youth Olympic Games, meaning eligible athletes preparing for future Games (including Los Angeles 2028) can also apply through their NOC.
Scholarships are not applied for directly by the athlete through a public portal; instead, each athlete's National Olympic Committee nominates candidates to Olympic Solidarity based on performance level, Olympic qualification potential, and financial need, and the IOC's Olympic Solidarity Commission approves the awards. Monthly financial support is disbursed to help cover living costs during training, and depending on the athlete's individual needs the scholarship can also fund coaching fees, sports equipment, accommodation at high-performance centres, and competition/travel costs during the qualification period.
Because Olympic Solidarity scholarships are administered NOC-by-NOC, the correct first step for a Pakistani or other international athlete is to contact their own National Olympic Committee (in Pakistan's case, the Pakistan Olympic Association) to ask about nomination criteria and internal selection timelines, rather than applying to the IOC directly.

Why Choose This Scholarship?
One of the very few global funding mechanisms specifically designed to help athletes from under-resourced countries reach the Olympic Games
Directly tied to Olympic qualification, so support is aligned with an athlete's actual competitive pathway
Covers real day-to-day training costs (coaching, equipment, accommodation) rather than only a lump-sum grant
Proven track record
scholarship-holders have gone on to win Olympic medals across recent Games including Milano Cortina 2026
Renewable across an Olympic cycle, offering multi-year support rather than a single payment
What the Scholarship Covers
Studying in Switzerland

Insider Tips & Pro Tips
Start by contacting your National Olympic Committee directly - Olympic Solidarity does not accept scholarship applications from athletes without NOC nomination
Keep a well-documented competition and training record, since nomination decisions weigh performance level and qualification potential heavily
Ask your national federation about parallel funding from International Federation (IF) development programmes, which sometimes complement Olympic Solidarity support
Understand that scholarship levels and slots vary significantly by NOC size and sport, so realistic self-assessment against your country's typical Olympic qualifiers helps target training goals
Maintain strict compliance with anti-doping rules, since violations can immediately end scholarship eligibility
Track the Olympic quadrennial calendar (e.g., the Los Angeles 2028 cycle) to know when your NOC's nomination window is likely to open
