The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom offers a comprehensive scholarship programme for students and doctoral candidates who demonstrate strong academic performance alongside a commitment to liberal values, democratic structures, and an open society. The foundation supports individuals across all academic disciplines who assume responsibility for themselves and others.

For German and EU students, funding is available for first degree programmes including combined Bachelor's and Master's courses, as well as doctorates. Non-EU international applicants are eligible to apply for Master's and doctoral programmes provided they complete their studies full-time in Germany and have not resided in Germany for more than 15 months prior to the start of the scholarship.

The selection process evaluates academic achievements, personality, and social or political commitment. Candidates must submit their applications exclusively through the online portal. Following document pre-selection by the scholarship department and selection committee, shortlisted candidates are invited to an interview, which is mandatory and conducted in person in Germany or via video call for non-European applicants currently abroad.

4

In addition to financial support, the foundation provides ideational backing through a wide range of events, summer academies, and self-organized scholar networks that promote interdisciplinary exchange and political education. A minimum knowledge of German at the B2 level is essential for participating in this ideational support, and application documents must be submitted in German.

5

The funding does not require repayment. The maximum basic student funding reaches up to 861 euros per month for certain categories, while German basic funding calculates up to a maximum of 744 euros based on BAfรถG. Doctoral funding provides up to 1,350 euros per month plus research allowances, and all fellows receive a monthly study costs lump sum of 300 euros.
