FCT PhD Studentships (Bolsas de Doutoramento)

Unlike many national doctoral funding schemes that restrict eligibility to citizens or long-term residents, FCT PhD Studentships are explicitly open to a broad international pool: Portuguese citizens, other EU nationals, third-country nationals, stateless individuals, and political refugees can all apply, provided they meet the academic and enrolment requirements of the doctoral programme.

The studentships are awarded through periodic national calls (the 'regular line' typically opens for a window each spring) as well as through funded individual and collaborative research projects that include studentship positions, so prospective applicants should monitor both the general FCT call and project-specific postings at Portuguese universities and research units.

Financial support is comprehensive: a monthly living stipend that is reviewed and adjusted annually, a full tuition fee waiver at the host Portuguese institution, funding for training activities and conference participation, health/social insurance contributions, and in many cases a relocation allowance for candidates moving from abroad.

Portugal has built a strong research base across its universities — including the University of Lisbon, University of Porto, University of Coimbra, and NOVA University Lisbon — and combines this with one of Western Europe's more affordable costs of living, making FCT-funded PhDs an increasingly popular route into European academic research careers.
