AIMS Scholarship Program (African Institute for Mathematical Sciences)

The core AIMS Scholarship funds the Structured Master's fully: 100% tuition coverage, plus bursaries for accommodation and living expenses, so accepted students can focus entirely on an intensive academic year taught by visiting lecturers from top universities worldwide. The curriculum blends rigorous theory with computational tools and is designed to feed graduates directly into further postgraduate study, research careers, or high-demand technical roles in industry and government across Africa.

Beyond the flagship Master's, AIMS also runs specialized scholarship tracks, including a Master's in Mathematical Epidemiology (MathEpi) delivered in partnership with the University of Toronto - a 16-month program equipping students to model and respond to public health challenges - and a Master's of Mathematical Sciences for Teachers (MMST) aimed specifically at practising educators who want to deepen their mathematics training while continuing to serve African classrooms.

Eligibility for the general AIMS Scholarship requires a four-year university degree (or its equivalent) in mathematics, or in a science or engineering discipline with a strong mathematics component. AIMS places heavy emphasis on demonstrated leadership, community service, and strong quantitative ability rather than test scores alone, and actively encourages applications from women, who remain underrepresented in mathematical sciences across the continent.

Applications are submitted entirely online through the AIMS applications portal, with each centre and specialized track running its own admission cycle and deadline. Because places are limited and competitive, prospective applicants are encouraged to apply early and to clearly demonstrate both academic readiness and a genuine interest in contributing to Africa's scientific and technical development after graduation.
