Youjiang Medical University for Nationalities (YMUN) was founded in 1958 and upgraded to a full undergraduate medical college in 1978. It is a provincial public medical university directly under the administration of the Education Department of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and serves as the largest higher medical education centre in the border area between China and Vietnam - the region collectively known as 'two countries and three provinces' (China and Vietnam; Guangxi, Yunnan and Guizhou).
YMUN hosts 8,000-9,000 full-time students with 4,600+ faculty and staff including 992 full-time teachers and 300+ professors and associate professors. The university operates 35 administrative departments, 55 clinical departments and 16 teaching/research departments, with 6 key Guangxi disciplines and 6 key laboratories. Since its founding, YMUN has produced more than 80,000 graduates serving the Guangxi-Yunnan-Guizhou border region and Vietnam.
The university has accepted international students since 2005 and operates an English-medium MBBS programme (Year 1: Chinese language foundation) that is PMDC, WHO, ECFMG, WFME and FAIMER recognised. In 2008 YMUN was awarded Excellent University in Undergraduate Education by China's Ministry of Education - a formal recognition of academic standards. A distinguishing feature is that every enrolled international student receives a guaranteed 2,000 RMB annual scholarship, making YMUN one of the most student-supportive non-MOE universities for financial aid.

Clinical Training
5 Hospitals
YMUN's 6-year MBBS programme uses one of the most gradual HSK timelines among non-MOE universities. Year 1 is dedicated to language study with HSK Level 3 required, but HSK Level 4 is not needed until before the Year 6 internship or graduation. This gives students the full programme duration to achieve HSK-4 - a significant advantage over universities that demand HSK-4 by the end of Year 1. YMUN also provides Chinese language tutoring throughout the programme.
Clinical training is anchored at YMUN's 3 directly affiliated hospitals (First, Second and Third Affiliated) plus 7 non-directly affiliated hospitals in Baise and the wider Guangxi region, with 89 teaching and practice bases spanning Guangxi, Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. International faculty are specifically appointed alongside Chinese professors to teach and provide clinical experience for international students, with the curriculum aligned to international medical education standards. The Year 6 internship may be completed in China at YMUN hospitals or in the student's home country.
Faculty strength: Highly qualified international faculty appointed specifically to teach and provide clinical experience to international students, alongside Chinese professors.
Affiliated Hospitals and Clinical Training
55 teaching hospitals (3 directly affiliated) and 89 teaching and practice bases across Guangxi, Yunnan and Guizhou - the largest medical training network in the China-Vietnam border region.
Comprehensive clinical exposure across all major disciplines throughout the program.

Baise City is located in western Guangxi near the borders of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces and close to the Vietnam border. The city sits along the Youjiang River, surrounded by dramatic karst mountain scenery. Baise has deep historical significance as the site of the 1929 Baise Uprising led by Deng Xiaoping, commemorated as a major event in modern Chinese history. The subtropical monsoon climate brings warm winters and hot summers.
Baise is well-connected by railway, highway, Baise Airport and the Youjiang River transport system, with strong links to the provincial capital Nanning. YMUN's location makes it the anchor medical institution for a unique cross-border region. Halal food and a Muslim canteen are easily accessible on campus, supporting Muslim students from Pakistan, South Asia and beyond.
Student life: Halal food and Muslim canteen on campus, 3-sharing rooms (or 2-sharing upgrade), and a unique guaranteed 2,000 RMB annual scholarship for every enrolled international student.

Important Admission Requirements
MOE Listed vs Non-MOE: What it Means for You
YMUN is not on China's MOE list of 45 universities authorised to offer fully English-medium MBBS. The programme is English-medium (Year 1: Chinese language foundation) with a two-stage HSK requirement (HSK-3 in Year 1, HSK-4 before internship). However, YMUN's language requirements are among the most gradual of any non-MOE university and YMUN has been awarded Excellent University in Undergraduate Education by the MOE for its teaching quality. PMDC, WHO, ECFMG, WFME and FAIMER recognition remain in place. Confirm current PMDC/PMC NOC status before applying.
Language Requirement: HSK-3 in Year 1, HSK-4 Before Internship (Gradual)
YMUN has one of the most gradual HSK timelines in the non-MOE category. HSK Level 3 must be passed in Year 1. HSK Level 4 is required before internship or graduation - crucially, NOT in Year 1. Students have the full programme duration to achieve HSK-4, which is a notable advantage over most non-MOE universities that require HSK-4 completion within Year 1. YMUN also provides Chinese language tutoring throughout the programme.
Pakistan, India and Bangladesh Recognition
YMUN is PMDC approved - Pakistani graduates are eligible to sit the NRE/NLE licensing examination. Indian applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese medical universities generally do not meet current NMC (India) criteria for FMGE/NExT eligibility under the 2021 NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate regulations; verify the latest NMC requirements directly with the National Medical Commission before applying. Bangladeshi applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese programmes are not commonly included on BMDC's recognised foreign institutions list; verify the current BMDC list directly before applying. Always verify current council policy before applying.

What is the total cost of MBBS at YMUN for 6 years?
The total 6-year MBBS cost is approximately RMB 1,60,700 (Year 1: 34,700 + Years 2-6: 25,200 x 5). The 1,500 RMB application fee and 2,500 RMB security deposit are separate (deposit deducted from Year 1 on arrival). Food typically costs 1,000-1,200 RMB per month and is excluded.

What makes Baise City unique?
Baise is the birthplace of the 1929 Baise Uprising led by Deng Xiaoping, giving it deep historical significance in China. It sits at the junction of Guangxi, Yunnan and Guizhou, with the Youjiang River running through the city and dramatic karst mountains surrounding it. Indian students are welcome to apply, but Indian applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese medical universities generally do not meet current NMC (India) criteria for FMGE/NExT eligibility under the 2021 NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate regulations. Most Indian students seeking guaranteed NMC compliance choose MOE-listed Chinese universities instead. Anyone considering this university must independently verify the latest NMC requirements directly with the National Medical Commission before applying. NEET (50th percentile General / 40th percentile reserved) remains mandatory for Indian students studying MBBS abroad in any case.
Can Bangladeshi students study MBBS at YMUN? Is the degree BMDC recognised?
Bangladeshi students may apply, but applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese programmes are not commonly included on BMDC's recognised foreign institutions list, which predominantly covers MOE-listed Chinese medical universities. Bangladeshi students should verify the current BMDC list directly before applying. Most Bangladeshi students seeking guaranteed BMDC recognition choose MOE-listed Chinese universities instead. SSC and HSC certificates with Physics, Chemistry and Biology are the core academic requirements.
