Jiujiang University (JJU) is a comprehensive public university with roots going back to 1901, when Dr. Mary Stone - one of the first Chinese women to receive a medical degree from an American university - established the Danforth Memorial Hospital Nursing School in Jiujiang. That founding tradition of medical service and education remains central to the university's identity today.
JJU was constituted in its current form in 2006 through the merger of four Jiujiang colleges: Jiujiang Teacher's College, Jiujiang Medical College, Jiujiang Vocational College, and Jiujiang College of Finance and Economics. Authorised by the Chinese Ministry of Education and supervised by the Jiangxi Provincial Government and Jiujiang City Government, JJU is the second largest university in Jiangxi Province, with 32,000 full-time students and 4,540 staff members across 23 schools and 88 undergraduate programs. Around 370 international students are currently enrolled.
JJU's main campus sits at the foot of Mt. Lushan - a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site and World Geopark - giving it one of the most distinctive campus settings of any medical university in this guide. The university has been accepting international students for MBBS since 2007, and over 1,000 foreign students have graduated from JJU.

The MBBS program at Jiujiang University (JJU) is a 6-year Bachelor of Clinical Medicine program for international students. Year 1 is dedicated to Chinese language study. From Year 2, medical subjects are taught in English with English as the primary medium of instruction. The syllabus is structured in close alignment with Pakistani and Indian medical college standards, making it particularly relevant for students planning PMC licensing examinations after graduation. JJU has been accepting international MBBS students since 2007, and over 1,000 foreign students have graduated from the program.
Clinical training at JJU utilises two directly affiliated Grade-3 Class-A hospitals - the highest hospital classification in China. JJU University Hospital has over 2,000 ward beds and serves as the primary clinical training centre, functioning as a regional centre for medical services, research, and education for Jiangxi Province and surrounding areas. JJU Dentistry Hospital provides specialist dental training. Both hospitals ensure students gain exposure to high-volume and complex clinical cases throughout their program.
JJU holds PMC/PMDC A-Category approval for Pakistani students, WHO recognition for global verification, ECFMG listing for the USMLE pathway, and WDOMS listing. Graduates are eligible for NLE/NRE (Pakistan), USMLE (USA), UKMLA/PLAB (UK), AMC (Australia), GMC, and ECFMG certifications. The university is the second largest in Jiangxi Province with 32,000 students, 23 schools, 88 undergraduate programs, and partnerships with 30+ global higher education institutions.

Jiujiang City is located in northwestern Jiangxi Province on the southern bank of the Yangtze River, at the northern shore of Poyang Lake - the largest freshwater lake in China. The city has a recorded history of more than 2,200 years and has long been a significant commercial and cultural hub in central China, known for its rivers, lakes, mountains, tea culture, and historical heritage.
JJU's main campus sits at the foot of Mt. Lushan, listed as both a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site and a World Geopark. Mt. Lushan is one of China's most celebrated mountains, famous for its mist-covered peaks, waterfalls, and history as a retreat for Chinese leaders and scholars. Students at JJU have this remarkable natural environment as part of their daily campus life.
The campus sports and cultural facilities are first-class. Students have access to museums, art galleries, concert halls, dance theatres, indoor gymnasiums, tennis halls, billiard halls, badminton halls, rock climbing halls, swimming pools, and shooting halls. A Muslim canteen operates inside the campus for halal food. International student dormitories include an attached kitchen and a shared public kitchen for self-cooking. Separate fully furnished hostels are provided for male and female international students.

International Recognitions and Approvals
Important Admission Requirements
PMC/PMDC A-Category Approval and International Recognitions
Jiujiang University (JJU) is PMC/PMDC approved with an A Category standing. Pakistani graduates are eligible to sit the NRE/NLE licensing examination after completing MBBS or BDS. JJU is also WHO recognised, ECFMG listed (USMLE pathway), and WDOMS listed. Graduates are eligible for NLE/NRE (Pakistan), USMLE (USA), UKMLA/PLAB (UK), AMC (Australia), GMC, and ECFMG certifications.
Language Requirement: HSK-4 (After Year 1) and HSK-5 (Before Graduation)
JJU has a two-stage Chinese language requirement. Year 1 is dedicated to Chinese language study. Students must pass HSK Level 4 after completing Year 1 to progress into the Clinical Medicine curriculum. If a student does not pass HSK-4 after Year 1, they may repeat the language year, transfer to another university, or withdraw. Additionally, HSK Level 5 is required before obtaining the Clinical Medicine degree. Begin Chinese language preparation before arriving at JJU to give yourself the strongest start. Titans Abroad can connect you with pre-departure language preparation resources.
MOE Listed vs Non-MOE: What Does It Mean for You?
Jiujiang University (JJU) is a Non-MOE listed university. China's Ministry of Education maintains a list of universities approved to offer fully English-medium MBBS programs. JJU is not on that list, which is why its program is not fully MOE-listed English-medium, though all medical subjects are still taught in English (Year 1 is a Chinese language foundation year). This does not affect international recognition - the program is approved by WHO, ECFMG, and PMC, and graduates are eligible for licensing examinations across multiple countries. The main practical difference is that students must develop Chinese language skills alongside medical studies, passing HSK-4 to progress and HSK-5 before graduation. If you want a fully English-medium MBBS with no Chinese language requirement, refer to the MOE-listed universities in this guide.
BDS Left-Handed Policy
Left-handed students are NOT eligible for BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) at Jiujiang University (JJU). This is a standard restriction applicable at all Chinese dental programs. Left-handed students are fully eligible for the MBBS/Clinical Medicine program at JJU.

Can Indian students study MBBS at Jiujiang University? Is NEET required?
Indian students are welcome to apply, but Indian applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese medical universities generally do not meet current NMC (India) criteria for FMGE/NExT eligibility under the 2021 NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate regulations. Most Indian students seeking guaranteed NMC compliance choose MOE-listed Chinese universities instead. Anyone considering this university must independently verify the latest NMC requirements directly with the National Medical Commission before applying. NEET (50th percentile General / 40th percentile reserved) remains mandatory for Indian students studying MBBS abroad in any case.
Can Bangladeshi students study MBBS at Jiujiang University? Is the degree BMDC recognized?
Bangladeshi students may apply, but applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese programmes are not commonly included on BMDC's recognised foreign institutions list, which predominantly covers MOE-listed Chinese medical universities. SSC and HSC certificates with Physics, Chemistry and Biology are the core academic requirements.
