Important Admission Requirements
MOE Listed vs Non-MOE: What it Means for You
Hunan University of Chinese Medicine is a Non-MOE listed university for the international MBBS programme. The course is English medium (with Year 1 dedicated to Chinese language foundation), with HSK-4 required by the end of Year 1 and HSK-5 required before graduation. PMC/PMDC approval, WHO/WDOMS, WCAME, WFME, ECFMG and HPCSA recognition mean Pakistani, South African and globally licensed pathways remain open, but applicants who want a fully English-medium MOE-listed programme should compare against MOE-listed universities in this guide. Confirm current PMDC/PMC NOC status with Titans Abroad before applying.
Language Requirement: HSK
HUCM applies a two-stage HSK requirement. Year 1 is dedicated entirely to Chinese language study; students must pass HSK Level 4 by the end of Year 1 to be promoted to the 5-year Clinical Medicine degree. HSK Level 5 is required before the degree is awarded. Chinese language development is a continuous commitment across all six years. Students who do not pass HSK-4 within Year 1 may need to repeat the language year or transfer out. Begin Chinese language preparation 3-6 months before arrival.
Pakistan, India and Bangladesh Recognition
HUCM is PMC/PMDC approved for Pakistani graduates, who are eligible to sit the NRE/NLE licensing examination after MBBS completion - multiple batches have graduated and passed PMC examinations. Indian applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese medical universities generally do not meet current NMC (India) criteria for FMGE/NExT eligibility under the 2021 NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate regulations; verify the latest NMC requirements directly with the National Medical Commission before applying. NEET remains mandatory for any Indian student studying MBBS abroad. Bangladeshi applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese programmes are not commonly included on BMDC's recognised foreign institutions list; verify the current BMDC list directly before applying.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Hunan University of Chinese Medicine (HUCM) recognised in Pakistan?
Yes. HUCM is approved by PMC/PMDC Pakistan. Pakistani graduates are eligible to sit the NRE/NLE licensing examination. Multiple batches of international students have graduated and passed the PMC examination. HUCM is also WHO recognised, WDOMS listed, WCAME accredited, WFME recognised, ECFMG eligible and HPCSA approved. Always verify the current NOC status at the time of application.
Is HUCM on the MOE list for international MBBS?
No. HUCM is not on the Chinese Ministry of Education (MOE) English-medium MBBS list. The international MBBS is English-medium (Year 1 is a Chinese language foundation year) with HSK-4 required by the end of Year 1 and HSK-5 before graduation. Pakistani graduates remain eligible for the PMDC/PMC licensing examination via PMC/PMDC approval.
Why is HSK-4 required in Year 1 and HSK-5 before graduation?
HUCM is a Non-MOE listed university - students must demonstrate Chinese language competency to progress into the clinical curriculum. Passing HSK-4 by end of Year 1 confirms readiness for clinical environments where Chinese is used in documentation and patient interaction. HSK-5 before graduation reflects the full language proficiency needed to practice medicine in China during the compulsory Year 6 internship.
What is the total cost of MBBS at HUCM for 6 years?
Approximately 1,44,000 RMB - the lowest in this entire guide. Year 1 is 33,000 RMB (all-in, includes management and liaison charges, Year 1 only). Years 2-6 are 22,200 RMB each. The 1,000 RMB application fee is additional. Food (~1,000 RMB/month), air ticket and stationery are not included. Tuition is locked at the admission rate - no increases during the program.
Is IELTS or TOEFL required at HUCM?
No. HUCM does not require IELTS or TOEFL. The primary English assessment is a self-introduction video (3-5 minutes) reviewed by the admissions office. Candidates who pass the video review are invited for an online interview. This makes HUCM one of the most accessible options for students who have not taken standardised English proficiency tests.
Can the internship be done outside China?
No. HUCM has made the Year 6 internship compulsory in China for all international students since 2018. The internship must be completed at HUCM affiliated hospitals. Students should factor in one additional year of living costs in China when planning their total budget. HSK-5 must also be passed before the degree is awarded.
Does HUCM require CSCA?
No. HUCM does not require the CSCA exam. Strong grades in senior high school (minimum 65% with Physics, Chemistry and Biology) are the primary academic criterion alongside the self-introduction video and online interview. HUCM is one of the few universities in this guide where students can apply without any standardised entrance test beyond their high school results.
What is the Freshman Scholarship at HUCM?
The HUCM Freshman Scholarship covers full Year 1 tuition and housing remission for students from CEALC countries or from countries that have not previously had students enrolled at HUCM. Selection is merit-based. Contact Titans Abroad before applying to confirm whether your country qualifies, as this can significantly reduce the effective Year 1 cost.
What is the Hunan Provincial Scholarship at HUCM?
The Hunan Provincial Government Scholarship is 15,000 RMB/year and is awarded to the top 20% of MBBS students annually - no application needed. Assessment is 70% academic performance and 30% extracurricular participation. This is one of the most accessible provincial scholarships in this guide.
Can Indian students study MBBS at HUCM? Is NEET required?
Indian students are welcome to apply, but Indian applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese medical universities generally do not meet current NMC (India) criteria for FMGE/NExT eligibility under the 2021 NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate regulations. Most Indian students seeking guaranteed NMC compliance choose MOE-listed Chinese universities instead. Verify the latest NMC requirements directly with the National Medical Commission before applying. NEET (50th percentile General / 40th percentile reserved) remains mandatory for any Indian student studying MBBS abroad.
Can Bangladeshi students study MBBS at HUCM? Is the degree BMDC recognised?
Bangladeshi students may apply, but applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese programmes are not commonly included on BMDC's recognised foreign institutions list, which predominantly covers MOE-listed Chinese medical universities. Verify the current BMDC list directly before applying. Most Bangladeshi students seeking guaranteed BMDC recognition choose MOE-listed Chinese universities instead. SSC and HSC certificates with Physics, Chemistry and Biology are the core academic requirements.
What makes Changsha a good city for international students?
Changsha is a historically rich and affordable Chinese city. It is home to the Yuelu Academy (founded 976 AD), is associated with Mao Zedong and offers excellent transport (Huanghua International Airport plus HSR to Guangzhou ~2hr and Wuhan ~3hr). The HUCM campus sits in a scenic lakeside setting in the Hanpu Science and Education Zone, surrounded by other major universities. Living costs are significantly lower than Beijing/Shanghai/Guangzhou, which complements the already low tuition structure.
