Hebei North University was established in September 2003 with the approval of the Ministry of Education, formed by merging three long-standing provincial institutions: Zhangjiakou Medical College (founded as Bethune Hygiene Health School in 1945), Zhangjiakou Teachers College (founded 1923) and Zhangjiakou Advanced Postsecondary Agronomy School (founded 1954). This heritage gives HEBNU a medical education foundation dating back to 1945. It is the only multi-faculty university in northern Hebei Province.
HEBNU operates 4 campuses across Zhangjiakou (West, East, South, North) with the new East Campus built in 2007 with a 300 million RMB investment covering 1.14 million square metres alone. The university has 12 colleges including the School of Medical Sciences, College of Medical Laboratory and Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a library with 1.4+ million volumes plus PQDD, Springer and 10+ electronic databases, 7 advanced research laboratories, DNA testing centres and multimedia classrooms.
HEBNU hosts 300+ international students from Pakistan, Indonesia, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Nigeria and other countries - a genuinely international campus. International partnerships span the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and other countries with guest professors from abroad. The university's recognition profile includes PMDC, WHO, ECFMG, WCAME, WFME and HPCSA - a strong international recognition footprint for a non-MOE institution.

Important Admission Requirements
MOE Listed vs Non-MOE: What it Means for You
Hebei North University is a Non-MOE listed university for the international MBBS programme. The course is English medium (with Year 1 dedicated to Chinese language foundation), with HSK-3 required by the end of Year 1. PMDC, WHO, ECFMG, WCAME, WFME and HPCSA recognition mean Pakistani, South African and globally licensed pathways remain open, but applicants who want a fully English-medium MOE-listed programme should compare against MOE-listed universities in this guide. Note that Hebei North University (HEBNU, Zhangjiakou) is different from Hebei Medical University (HEBMU, Shijiazhuang) - the latter is MOE-listed. Confirm current PMDC/PMC NOC status with Titans Abroad before applying.
Language Requirement: HSK
HEBNU requires international MBBS students to pass HSK Level 3 by the end of Year 1 to progress to the clinical medicine years. Year 1 is fully dedicated to Chinese language study. From Year 2, core medical subjects are taught in English with Chinese used for clinical communication. Begin Chinese language preparation 3-6 months before arrival.
Pakistan, India and Bangladesh Recognition
HEBNU is PMDC approved for Pakistani graduates, who are eligible to sit the NRE/NLE licensing examination after MBBS completion. Indian applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese medical universities generally do not meet current NMC (India) criteria for FMGE/NExT eligibility under the 2021 NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate regulations; verify the latest NMC requirements directly with the National Medical Commission before applying. NEET remains mandatory for any Indian student studying MBBS abroad. Bangladeshi applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese programmes are not commonly included on BMDC's recognised foreign institutions list; verify the current BMDC list directly before applying.
