Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang Province and one of the most famous cities in China. It is known for West Lake (UNESCO World Heritage Site), strong public transport, high-speed rail connectivity, a developed technology economy (Alibaba's headquarters) and a safe urban environment. Compared with smaller non-MOE university cities, Hangzhou offers more international exposure, better transport links and stronger access to internships, hospitals, restaurants and cultural activities.
For international students, Hangzhou is attractive but more expensive than many inland cities. Students should budget carefully for food, electricity, transport and personal expenses. The university has multiple campuses with medical and health-related schools connected to the city's hospital network and student services. Hangzhou has metro, bus and high-speed railway connections across China and Xiaoshan International Airport for direct flights internationally.
Student life: On-campus international student accommodation with furnished rooms; campus dining facilities, supermarkets, sports areas, student service offices and study spaces; public transport access across Hangzhou including metro, bus and high-speed railway connections.

Important Admission Requirements
MOE Listed vs Non-MOE: What it Means for You
Hangzhou Normal University is a Non-MOE listed university for the international MBBS programme. The course is English medium (with Year 1 dedicated to Chinese language foundation), with HSK-4 required by the end of Year 1. PMDC, WHO/WDOMS, ECFMG, WCAME and WFME-linked recognition mean Pakistani and globally licensed pathways remain open, but applicants who want a fully English-medium MOE-listed programme should compare against MOE-listed universities in this guide. Confirm current PMDC/PMC NOC status with Titans Abroad before applying.
Language Requirement: HSK
HZNU's bilingual non-MOE Clinical Medicine pathway requires students to target HSK Level 4 by the end of Year 1 before progressing fully into higher clinical study. Hangzhou is a highly developed city, but clinical communication still depends heavily on Chinese during hospital rotations. Begin Chinese language preparation 3-6 months before arrival.
Pakistan, India and Bangladesh Recognition
HZNU is PMDC approved for Pakistani graduates, who are eligible to sit the NRE/NLE licensing examination after MBBS completion. Indian applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese medical universities generally do not meet current NMC (India) criteria for FMGE/NExT eligibility under the 2021 NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate regulations; verify the latest NMC requirements directly with the National Medical Commission before applying. NEET remains mandatory for any Indian student studying MBBS abroad. Bangladeshi applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese programmes are not commonly included on BMDC's recognised foreign institutions list; verify the current BMDC list directly before applying.

HZNU is also listed by WHO/WDOMS, ECFMG listed and WCAME accredited (WFME-recognised pathway). Always verify the current PMDC NOC status at the time of application.
Is HZNU on the MOE list for international MBBS?
No. Hangzhou Normal University is not on the Chinese Ministry of Education (MOE) English-medium MBBS list. Pakistani graduates remain eligible for the PMDC/PMC licensing examination via PMDC recognition.
What is the HSK requirement at HZNU?
Students should target HSK Level 4 by the end of Year 1 before progressing fully into higher clinical study. This is important because the program follows a non-MOE bilingual pathway and hospital communication requires Chinese. Begin language preparation 3-6 months before arrival.
What is the total cost of MBBS at HZNU for 6 years?
Approximately 1,47,000 RMB. Year 1 is approximately 36,500 RMB including the management and liaison fee of 13,900 RMB. Years 2-6 are approximately 22,100 RMB each. What is the annual cost at HZNU?
The estimated base annual cost is 20,500 RMB, which covers tuition of 16,000 RMB and hostel of 4,500 RMB. From Year 2 onwards, adding medical checkup, insurance and visa extension brings the annual total to approximately 22,100 RMB. Year 1 is an all-inclusive package of approximately 36,500 RMB.
Can the internship be done in Pakistan?
The Year 6 internship may be completed in China or in the student's home country, subject to university approval and documentation rules. Titans Abroad can guide you on the home-country internship process before you apply. Pakistani students should verify with PMC that a home-country internship will be accepted for NRE/NLE eligibility.
What is Hangzhou like for students?
Hangzhou is one of China's most developed and attractive cities. Known for West Lake (UNESCO World Heritage), strong public transport, high-speed rail connectivity, safety, technology companies (Alibaba HQ) and a strong student environment. Living costs are higher than many inland cities, so students should budget carefully.
What is the difference between Hangzhou Normal University and Hangzhou Medical College?
Hangzhou Normal University is a comprehensive public university with a School of Clinical Medicine and Hangzhou School of Medicine (listed in WDOMS). Hangzhou Medical College is a different institution in Zhejiang Province. Do not confuse the two when checking recognition, fees or application documents.

Can Indian students study MBBS at HZNU? Is NEET required?
Indian students are welcome to apply, but Indian applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese medical universities generally do not meet current NMC (India) criteria for FMGE/NExT eligibility under the 2021 NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate regulations. Most Indian students seeking guaranteed NMC compliance choose MOE-listed Chinese universities instead. Verify the latest NMC requirements directly with the National Medical Commission before applying. NEET (50th percentile General / 40th percentile reserved) remains mandatory for any Indian student studying MBBS abroad.
Can Bangladeshi students study MBBS at HZNU? Is the degree BMDC recognised?

SSC and HSC certificates with Physics, Chemistry and Biology are the core academic requirements.
Does HZNU offer scholarships for international students?
Yes. Zhejiang Provincial Government Scholarship (Type B undergraduate), Hangzhou Municipal Government Scholarship and a Hangzhou Normal University Scholarship are available. All are competitive and performance-based - do not plan your budget assuming you will receive one. Confirm current quota and eligibility with Titans Abroad before applying.
